SLOW MOTORCADE: POP MUSIC ON A GRAND SCALE!

I know I’ve been threatening to put some tunes together for you for a while now, so here they are. Of course, I have to start with the passing of those who left this mortal coil recently that I’ve listened to.

The Stone Roses are responsible for some of the most beautiful, melodic, mood inducing rock/pop music I have ever heard. I loved them from the first moment I heard them. The first record of theirs is almost the perfect record, a timeless collection of songs I hope future generations will keep alive. They were not around long but what an impact they made. The Roses great bassist Gary Mani Mounfield die recently very unexpectedly his passing made me very sad because he cannot be replaced. Here is a very loose live performance of my favorite song off the first record. R.I.P. Mani.

Joe Ely of Texas music fame just died. I was working at Tower records when this record came out, and this scorching rockabilly tune was the title and first track. When I heard this tune, I was hooked, I wanted more, but the rest of the record was not that, it was a ballad filled Americana, dusty Texas sounding mid-tempo record. Only later did I grow to appreciate those other songs and understand what Joe Ely was really about. He was a troubadour and a balladeer, but man when he wanted to rock, he could rock. I love that this is live in Austin around Halloween, makes for a very fun environment,

It is not often that I get to post brand new music that I totally love. The great Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives just released Space Junk, a collection of 20 instrumental tracks that everyone needs to hear. Marty is a giant with the band of a lifetime, and these songs are so good it hurts. Are they a country band, are they a country/rock band, are they a power pop band or are they a surf band? The answer is they are all of them and more. If you want to know how cool Marty Stuart is, he owns Clearence White’s B-bender Tele, Pop Staples Tele, one of Glenn Campbell’s guitars with Glenn’s name inlayed in mother of pearl on the fret board, and he has Mick Ronson’s Fender Esquire, and those are only the ones I know about, enough said.

Tuk Smith is one of the coolest cats walking the planet, he seems incapable of writing a bad song. In interviews he says he has but I’ve yet to hear any evidence of him ever doing so. He has the Restless Hearts now, but because I love T Rex so much, I had to go back to his other band the Biters for this very cool tune and video.

Really cool You Tube channel. I just remembered that one of the best Zepplin funk songs is the Rover that is on the Physical LP along with Custard Pie.

Tuk Smith propaganda. I love this cat. I feel lame to be so late to the party, the same I felt with Marty and the Superlatives. This Dude seems to be incapable of writing a bad song. Thanks to you I knew about the Biters because you put one of their songs on the CD you made for me years ago. You know the one that says, “God dam man get down and jam.” It was the best song you put on the CD; it sounded like a Chinn-Chapman tune from the 70s.
