UNWELL is the new project of Nasty Samy (Samuel Guillerand) who played in tons of bands (SECOND RATE, HAWAII SAMURAI, The BLACK ZOMBIE PROCESSION, HELLBATS, DUMBELL…) in the past. Sam is also an author and he’s been concentrating on writing these last years. His last books include one about LA MUERTE and another one about famous French cartoonist Frank Margerin. While he put music aside for a few years, Sam decided to record these 8 tracks in various studios in Paris between 2022 and 2024. The production is very good and the whole album is very cinematic, instrumental and illustrated by various carefully selected vocal samples. Sam’s punk rock roots show well in songs like “Il fait froid dans ce monde” or”Les reflets fugitifs de ta vie ralentie” but you’ll also hear some post-punk traces in “Seuls sont les indomptés” and its early KILLING JOKE vibe or in “Minuit infini”. Most of the samples come from movies/books and focus on a dark vision of life full of loneliness, desire to escape and the constant feeling of being caught and doomed. There’s also a lot of melancholy in the slower songs like “Mais vous, par contre, vous êtes encore vivants”, “Cette espèce d’angoisse” or “Piégé”. Nevertheless, you’ll find a bit of hope, a little light in the dark night when listening to “Comment est-ce que vous pourriez supporter cette histoire?” although the French sample about death isn’t very joyful… “Le Désordre et la Nuit” is the missing link between Nasty Samy’s music and his passion for cinema. Check it out! /Laurent C.
