Hailing from Los Angeles, The SWEET KILL is led by Vancouver native Pete Mills. Opening track “Forbidden” displays music wandering somewhere between indie and goth rock. Pete’s vocals remind me of INTERPOL with a bit of PETER MURPHY thrown in. 80s synths flirt with electric and acoustic guitars, “Undead” has a Peter Hook kind of bass and a catchy goth pop chorus while “Queen” has a bit of a RAMMSTEIN vibe. You’ll also hear some industrial rock influences in “Evil” and things get more epic with “Creeper”. Goth rock turns heavy punk rock in “Destroy” while the mood gets cinematic with “Nowhere” and its JOY DIVISION tones. The indie pop side of The SWEET KILL can especially be heard in “Alive” and in “Explode”. “Divide” could have been a dark rock hit in the 80s and you’ll also hear some CURE influenced guitars in the last songs “Step 1” and goodbye. If you’re looking for a melodic goth rock album then no need to look further, this one is for you. /Laurent C.
