We increasingly live in the post inequality world. And by that, I don’t at all mean there isn’t inequality — HOLY SHIT, there’s TONS of inequality. There’s more inequality than there are fake eyelashes. In fact there’s probably more inequality than ever before. No, I mean that we increasingly live in a world that notices immense inequality about as much as we noticed when the movie “Shazam: Fury of The Gods” left theaters. (I had to look up the name of that movie because I also didn’t notice that it existed.) As covered in Peoples Dispatch, “The wealth of the world’s top five richest men has more than doubled since 2020 while 4.8 billion people, or 60% of humanity, have been further impoverished.” These men could buy a yacht a minute for the rest of their pathetic, empty, sparkling lives and never spend all the money they have. But of course, when you dig down past that surface layer of reality — The “Fuck you, Jeff Bezos!” layer — You begin to see that it’s not about those 5 men or the next 5 on the list or the next 5. It’s about the system as a whole. Immense greed created by a system that naturally, endogenously (and always) creates inequality harms billions of people every single day, and it’s not even in the top 10 list of concerns of our ruling “leaders”. (Number one of course being how to get their teenage son to look like he’s being recruited to run track at Stanford, so that he can be accepted at Stanford, when he has a body type better suited for running the homemade butter sculptures kiosk at the Iowa state fair.) However, pretending our “leaders” have a list of concerns that includes inequality anywhere on it implies they care at all about inequality, and they do not. They may (very rarely) pretend to care about inequality. They may even point to inequality at times — such as when Trump passed a massive tax cut for the rich and some Democrats said roughly, “That’s mean to poor folks! How rude!” — but they don’t actually give a shit. And there’s a good reason why. The ruling elite have immensely benefited from the gut-wrenching inequality of our ravenous capitalist system — Just ask their financial advisor, or their financial advisor’s live-in dessert chef’s live-in assistant. But beyond that, just about every elected official in Congress or the White House got there by promising corporate America they would defend corporate America at every turn. If they didn’t make that promise, either directly or implicitly, they would not have gotten the millions needed to run for office and the millions more needed to win. If, in an incredibly rare moment, a real actual human being with a soul gets elected to the federal government without making that dark promise, they are then removed by corporate America through a variety of means, but mainly by funding an opponent to bring them down. There have also been a select few times when a high-ranking official made that promise to corporate America but then had a change of heart and started representing the people by working towards peace and equality. Those officials were JFK Jr. Those officials were then murdered on live television. It’s not about one corrupt individual, or 10, or 30. It’s about the system.
