“THE “PEACE” INDUSTRY Nothing has demonstrated the irrelevance and bankruptcy of the peace and mediation industry more than the genocide in Gaza. I’m not speaking of every individual involved in these groups, but rather the structure of this particular industry. It’s made up of glorified NGOs funded largely by European governments to place band aids on the savagery of imperialism, and at other times to aid imperialism. The people in the highest echelons of these organizations make nice salaries in fancy European capitals. They pretend to care but are actually driven by huge egos. They want name recognition and to win awards for fostering “peace,” even if peace means getting Third World governments or liberation movements to submit to the oppressor. They work to “deescalate” righteous liberation struggles, to convince the parties involved to concede to imperialism for the sake of stability and humanitarianism. For these organizations, violence in the Global South, regardless of the reason for it, is a problem that must be resolved by superior civilized white liberals who know better, with the help of some token brown people who play the game. I’ve met lots of people involved in this work. Some are aware they’re just working a job that pays them to live. But others are totally corrupt, privately racist, completely delusional, and narcissistic about their impact. For many of them the Third World is an arena of career opportunities, a place for them to make money and a name for themselves. The so-called “jungle” of the Global South is a playground for having adventures, an escape from their boring responsibilities in the mundane West, all under the pretense of “peace” and a creepy white man’s burden. They’re just adopting the attitude of their imperialist organizations, which can also manifest in abusive and parasitic behavior towards locals unlucky enough to come into their orbit. And worst of all, while cosplaying as humanitarians they’re compiling information about the locals they have access to, much like an anthropologist studies animals for National Geographic. And they report it all back to their European donors like spies. In the case of Gaza, this European-funded “peace” industry addresses the genocide as if it’s a tragic war. If they’re involved in any capacity, it would likely be to push for groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iraqis and the Yemenis to hold their fire and stop inflicting material consequences on the genocide perpetrators in exchange for some imperialist scraps. It’s never about liberation and justice but rather “de-escalation,” meaning the absence of conflict for the Global North parasites that fund this fake “peace” industry, so they can go back to business as usual. So keep collecting your undeserved salaries and playing your little spy game while telling yourself you’re some sort of hero. Those who matter see you for who you are now.” (-Rania Khalek)
