We were little Rocky Horrors running from musclebound jocks in squeaky sneaker gymnasiums and stupid malls. We didn’t always have podcasts or cellphones so I ran up a lot of people’s phone bills as a teenager trying to set up shows, pursue women, form bands and network, those hellishly high phonebills caused me and others a lot of foolish grief. I also spent a shit ton of money on stamps cause I had pen pals all over the world and I’d send ’em fanzines and if I really liked you, I’d make a mixtape, like everybody did back then, but mine would be like, a talk show where I’d ramble on about crazy hassles I experienced as a wayward goth with judgemental and disapproving suburban sports moms and asshole coaches, dumbfuck brutes, and juvenile authorities. I might interview my Catholic school pals Joey, Mitch, or Tom about our latest steal a keg from the dickhead fratboy party escapades, and splice it all up with snippets of Saturday morning tv commercials, my little pal Dave just learning how to play “Sonic Reducer”, or “House Of The Rising Sun” on acoustic guitar, and the same kinda mishmash of Jesus and Mary Chain and Hanoi Rocks that you see me still posting here. I’m still all the way fulltime punk rock, always will be, so there’s that. But now I got a lot of responsibilities and family obligations so I can’t just get in the van and light out for Mystery City, lookin’ for adventure in whatever comes our way, like we did even well into our thirties. We lived real hard for a very long time and now we’re physically paying the price for that.
It’s gotten real Tower Of Babel in this country, I don’t speak the language no more, not the special feelings schooled, safespace privileged, make believe Mister Rogers, fauxwoke shitlib, sweep it all under the rug pretty talk, and certianly not the big bad wolf, Coach Green sports team, wrestling mat, talk radio blowhard, thank a kkkop, sloppering honky, build more jails and kill the poor, nazi shit we hear from the insanely patriotic wingnuts. Blue Maga, Red Maga? Ultimately, it’s all just money talk. I’m not taking the classes, going to the seminar, attending the meditation retreat, getting the what to wear makeover, taking the latest thang challenge, or adopting their latest lexicon. No thanks. Aint receiving no Bill Gates latest updates on my cardboard I-phone. Fuck those people. I came from some real backwards, regressed, stuck in the fifties, racist rightwing places, all value was placed on hierarchy, materialism, sports, and militarism thinly veiled as religion. There was not a lot of real faith to be found in those churches except for white makes right, and pray for the troops. Not much was emphasized about the Christ teachings articulated in the Sermon On The Mount, or Beatitudes about giving your stuff away and serving the poor, it was more like, creepy preachers saying obey worldly power, tanks, and winning sports games. So there was no internet back then, or cellphones, I spent a lot of time on payphones as a kid. My access to big city amenities was zilch, so my idea of punk rock came slowly, and organically, nothing overnight about it, certainly no flash jacket instant popularity, it grew from my early appreciation of magic tricks and showbiz hooplah, white tigers and old movies. I had a famous magician friend named Theo Mandrake who taught me some simple escapes and sold me a dovepan, temple screens, thumb tips, flashpaper, so that was my first foray into performing. Then I joined a mime camp with Greg Goldston and Debbie Wasserman where I spent the summer with a kid from Califonia named Marin who went to like these free minded L.A. hippie schools who was really into the Who, but his mom and Dad were famous music industry insiders. At first I got into the wild fifties rock my grandmother had on 45’s-Elvis, Cab Calloway, Johnny Ray, novelty songs like “I Aint Got A Home”, the “Monster Mash”, some Jerry Lee Lewis…then, it was Monkees reruns into the Beatles into the Stones. Finally, Bowie, Prince, the Doors and Stooges came to me when I was maybe 12 or 13. Then the early eighties one hit wonders from the pre MTV new wave era that made it to radio, ya know? Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper the Smiths and Psychedelic furs, you know? After I got into like, the Deadboys and the Clash and started reading “Creem” magazine and checking out library books about Andy Warhol and Abbie Hoffman and the 60’s counterculture and Black Panthers, I kinda figured the whole point to punk rock was to take what you like from previous generations but improvise, leave your own imprint on it, abandon all the shit that no longer rang true, and create your own world away from all the nutty G.I. Joe evangelicals and future corrections officers they manufacture in the cornfields of Nowhere, USA. Do It Yourself meant make your own subculture outta what you had at hand, duct tape and spray paint, combat boots and copy machines and strobe lights and dry ice when you wanna get fancy. I had some preppier friends who helped build a ramshackle stage using the same stolen materials they used to create their BMX bike ramps behind the drive in, but my mulleted metalhead buds crashed through it during our first neighborhood show. To me, it was all still very, Our Gang/Little Rascals, and the Generation X and Mott The Hoople songs about having a gang and doing your own thing and stickin to the code, and stickin’ it to the man were always my favorites. Rocknroll, or punk rock as we called it, was always all about throwing a wrench into the honky death machine, about subverting the forces of evil and thwarting and mocking the mainstream lies and evil bully culture. “Having fun!” You know my 80’s were all about “Kiss Me Deadly”, really! “Brixton Nights” by The Boys. “Whatever Happened To Fun” by Candy. You dig. So it made little to no sense to me when I started meeting all the booji poseur city slickers with the expensive leather jackets from Trash & Vaudeville for whom punk was about monetizing prior artists’s ideas for redundant shortcuts to overnight popularity, or kareoke stardumb, ya know? Just like the preps with the designer jeans and golf shirt collections who harrassed me at honky middle school in the midwest football towns. Really, I’d post musicians wanted fliers and sometimes get calls from people who would talk to me about money, how much money you got, how do we use this to make money, that was never really a motivation for me. Any money I ever made went right back into Kinkos copy machines or record stores, experiencing adventures on the road, or always looking for new kicks as Lux sang, fresh inspiration, “having fun!”, Never got sucked into the “Greed Is Good”, or “Lifestyles Of The Rich & Famous” yuppified, get rich scheming, internalised capitalism, rank and power bullshit. That was all empty entertainment for pilledout Stepford Wives who joined country clubs or ate bon bons in bed-ya know? “Dynasty” and “Dallas” was not my bag. You can keep the Tom Cruise movie, I’m going to the city to find the wild rebels. Maybe meet a goth girl, start a commune, a riot of my own. The Lords Of The New Church were really important to me. I knew people who had the shirts but never got the message, it’s like they never heard the Clash except for “Should I Stay” and even with “Rock The Casbah”, they just shouted along numbly to the three words part of the chorus, never really listened to the words, which always surprised me, cause for me, the words were the whole thing. The local guitar picker got his guitar pickin’ thumb…As I got older, one by one, everybody grew up and calmed down and started working for the clampdown, and even me, I ended up making payments on a sofa and a girl, but I never lost the desire to compose, create, record, perform, agitate, uplift, come together, raise the cosciousness. After they all got the I-phones, it was cheese stands alone, I was keepin’ to the code and they were takin’ the other path. Looking back now, there were always signs, but it still shocked me they all fell in line, became obedient consumers, competing for miarges of prestige and ownership, aligning with whoever owned the biggest truck or knew somebody who knew somebody, they became incapable of spontanaiety or bucking the system or goin’ it alone. They were taught that critical thinking just meant finding out what the most powerful person in the room thought and always copying that. Whoa. Whole different trip, man. Entirely different head. There are people in this world who still self identify as punk, who object more to vandalism, white property being defaced, disorder of trains being delayed, or their commute being disrupted, than they ever, ever will genocide or houseless folks, the mass incarceration of poor people, or prison labor, they think their shit don’t stink and punk just means owning the most old shit, or sucking up to big city celebrity friend of a friend of a friend of a friend. It’s bewildering to me. “USA! USA!” How did everybody become these dumbly goose stepping sports fans? I’ll never know. Academics who don’t care about wrongly fired or assassinated academics, doctor’s kids who don’t care about bombed hospitals, media pros who aint said shit about murdered journalists or Julian Assange. So called feminists who don’t care about Palestinian mothers. It’s gotten too freakin’ bizarro world for me and I think I have a pretty substantial threshold for witnessing madness. Middle class people in particular are still seemingly under that same mass formation hypnospell that took hold when Bush and Cheney first said Muslims crashed planes into the towers and started issuing all those hysteria driving color coded terror alerts almost 25 years ago. “See something/say something” they told us, but Julian assange is in Belmarsh for publishing war crimes that embarrass the empire. I don’t even call people on the phone no more cause all they can do is brag about their inheritance or bleat on and on about pre assigned external boogeymen like Hamas or China or Trump or Russia. It is all too much, defies any logic, surreal like an old Twilight Zone episode, or that 80’s movie, “They Live”. I thought the Matrix was supposed to be science fiction. It’s rolling out all around us now. Boiling frogs aint no hyperbole. I’ve seen so many of my ex associates just studiously ignoring genocide or even obnoxiously insisting I stop talking about genocide because it somehow makes them uncomfortable. They aint phased by genocide, but are OFFENDED I oppose genocide. They taught ’em all at safespace university they have the white to never be offended. That’s why I got time for people who only care about their own comfort, as if the only thing that ever threatens that, is some aging punk rocker speaking against bipartisan ethnic cleansing and the censorship industrial complex, cop city IDF training centers for fascist jackboots, or the appalling and atrocious lies on the cover of the NYT. I just got off work and I’m tired and wish I had a beer, but instead, I cleaned the house and sat down to catch up with what’s going on in this dystopian shitshow. No good news. I suppose the sun shining through my picture window and the fact that my street is not yet being bombed will suffice. There’s an impossible chasm between the got-mines who think nothing but offensive speech, undesirable protests, or the mere presence of us inconvenient poor people in their posh zipcode can ever happen to them; and the majority of us, who can not afford rent or groceries, who watch helplessly in terror, as our brethren are demonized for being houseless, or being killed cause the predator class wants to plunder their resources for profit, ‘denied basic human rights, or for resisting fascism. As the overworked and underpaid parent of a disabled teenager, I’m pretty disturbed about the butchering of beautiful Palestinian babies, children, innocents, and all the self congratulatory adults casually repeating obscene dismissals about how they have it coming, shoulda gone to college or married up the old fashioned way, or chosen different parents, which is memorably what shitlib saint Obama’s spokesman said about his droning an American/Muslim teen, who Trump later killed the little sister of. Not me, Jack. I’m against it. To paraphrase Muslim peace icon, Muhammad Ali, no Muslim ever done me any wrong and I don’t even believe many of the false flag fabrications used to supposedly justify their intentional extermination by the evil empire. Remember when spooky fraud AOC play acted like she cared about children in cages under Trump, but now they only trot her and Bernie out to provide shitlib cover for Biden and Netanyahu atrocities. I quote it often, but Dee Dee Ramone was a soulful and romantic poet who once wrote, “I just wanna walk right out of this world cause everybody has a poison heart”. I used to be a songwriter but seldom have time or clarity to write and even at this very moment, a rare two house of silence, finds me unable to summon up any fresh words for the overwhelming anguish and frustration so many of us feel, all those of us who understand the same puppetmasters control all the viable candidates of both parties, so no matter how hard we vote, it never makes a difference, the fix is in. I can’t even fathom all these comfy/cozy middle class boomers who still watch CNN/Fox who are worried about their investment properties and stuck in some old propaganda paradigm, where poor people are bad and they only believe what the millionaires on tv tell them to. I must have been a lonely kid, cause somehow, I found out I was wrong about most people I ever knew and looked up to.
