I’m pretty domesticated these days but I won’t be gentrified. I remember the second or third time me and my crew made a desperate break for the coast. We were a reckless traveling caravan of goths and heavy metal kids, impuslively endeavoring to escape that horribly militarized and goosestepping rightwing evangelical town we’d all been tortured in for being too new wave. Well, me, anyways. I was really into Duran Duran and Lords Of The New Church. The feral roadie turned replacement guitarist was a full blown AC/DC guy; the shaggy headed “young Wayne Kramer” lookalike with the big Mick Jagger crocodile smilin’ girl magnet starpowered lead weedler had a boyish Eddie Van Halen charm but was somewhat sadly already showing early signs of wanting to move towards a more standard capitalist Murkkkan Dream….We were bold and foolish then and thought in our hearts that maybe we could get away with perpetuating our amateur hour, basement punk rocknroll circus forever and ever on a broken shoestring and some three chord punk anthems. Bands like Faster Pussycat and the Hangmen, Dramarama and Soul Asylum were in the magzines and on MTV. We saw soemthing of ourselves in alla them. The Replacements and the Cult, and Circus Of Power, too. The lads ended up becoming roommates with a genius writer/convenience store clerk who had a cool beatnik detective style, and a wild radical streak whom I fully expected to become the next Hunter S. Thompson or James Baldwin-they taught him how to play bass and he briefly even became a member of one of the best underground pop/punk bands of the day. Ourselves, we took an overnight nosedive into Spinal Tap with the exploding drummers and such, our outlandish lifestle scared off a long procession of bassists and drummers and standin replacement lead guitarists, some rich people ripped off some of our songs, and we somehow managed to impress a fellow fanzine writer who tapped me to host his crazy, ramshackle cable access tv show for awhile. Soon, I made the rash relocation to L.A. where we found out our bottom of the barrel crash course for the ravers would require a big influx of money to get off the ground that was never forthcoming. ‘Ended up on the streets with a recurring frequency, it wears you out. WE added a goth guy for awhile who played 12 string guitar and kinda took us in a more atmospheric and ethereal direction not unlike Thee Hypnotics meets Mother Love Bone and T. Rex, but we really hit our stride just mining a real raw Beasts Of Bourbon/Coma-Tones/Rose Tattoo/Deadboys kinda vein. In the Teen Spirit year, two members of our intimate entrouge overdosed and died and others went all Justin timberlake and Jennifer Anniston, got straight hairdos, and assimilated into the daytime world, it was wearying. We kept recording at deadend studios and getting good reviews in magazines, but were too broke to ever self release, or tour or anything. Shit just went from bad to worse when we stupidly revisted the old homestate where we never fi in, and all the legitimately left leaning politics of this country were all killed dead under Bush/Cheney and the empire’s clever rebrand, Obama-after that, it was always gonna be more George Orwell tech-surveillance, billionaire plundering, wage slavery and forever wars based on lies and false flag fabrications. It all still haunts me in my elderly goth years. So there we were mindin’ our own business, which we called Rock, takin’ the subway from the gloomiest pre gentrified backstreets into Kenmore Square with all the Marky Mark funky bunches givin’ us the same ole macho stinkeye we’d grown accustomed to receiving from jock preppies in Miami Vice jackets and stupid Polo golfshirts way back in the flyover states of white suburbia.We were naturally gussied up in our low budget rabblerousin’, full metal racket, battle rattle scarves on spurs on red pleather and feather boas, when we first arrived at the dirty downtown divebar just a lookin’ for a fix and a kiss, and while we were afforded more space in the blue collar Boston ghetto than we ever got back in the post Nafta former factory towns and endless soy bean fields of the midwest, some dickhead hardcore skinheads had to start shit with me over the usual blue eyeshadow and panda eyes and the meaner than a junkyard dog rhythm guitar player sez to the biggest, dumbest one, “Boy, I wrassled bigger cattle than you”, punches his lights out, and chases his “This Is Boston Not L.A” buffoonish. bonehead buddies up the hill towards Fenway. Those were the old days. The snobby richkid Cambridge clique fortunate sons and daughters college bar thought we looked to much like L.A. Guns in the Dinosaur Jr. and Blake Babies era, so they never even played our primitive demotape, recorded in a dank basement on shitty equipment, but we had some good songs and I still wanna get ’em on tape proper before me or the Malcolm Young bruiser guitarist take the dirtnaps, it’s been a long, hard trudge through the blurry years of grunge/alternative, douchebag fratboy lifestyle programming, monopoly manufactured fake culture, lies for war and facking Taylor Swift, but you know, as long as we are alive, there’s gotta be some way to conjure back some faint glimmer of the old daze rocknroll yahoo and funtime fireworks, but alas, this morning, I gotta do a lotta domesticated family chores and assist with an outdoor labor project and assist with a painting project this weekend. I still miss rocknroll, never understood how so many of our ex associates were sucked magnetically out of the punk rock underground and into that dumb mainstream tv Starbucks/I-phone, Borg-like hypnospell, unreality show. State of the union is there aint one no more-just a buncha every man for himself rats from a sinking ship buzzword repeating divided slaves of amnesia. Heavy sighs of resignation.
