Retaliations, which in the moment, may feel justified by the unacceptable attacks of these militias, put us on a path toward a war that doesn’t serve our interests and that we cannot afford— and one whose victory we cannot define and whose exit we cannot envision. To truly protect our troops and avoid both war and more needless American deaths, Biden should begin withdrawing troops from Iraq and Syria and press Israel for a ceasefire since its slaughter in Gaza is fueling four fronts that put the US at risk: Attacks by Syrian and Iraqi militias, attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea, the risk of war between Israel and Lebanon, and lastly, the risk of a new nuclear crisis with Iran and a full-scale war between the US and Iran. It is unquestionable that the attacks by these militias are linked to Biden’s blocking of a ceasefire. There were about 60 attacks by militias against US troops between Jan 2021 and March 2023. After the Gaza war, however, there have been more than 160 attacks, except during the 6 days when there was a ceasefire in Gaza. Then the attacks completely stopped. For every day that Biden continues to block a ceasefire in Gaza, he needlessly puts US troops at risk. For the sake of protecting our troops and protecting the American people from another war in the Middle East, he must de-escalate the situation in the Middle East– not add more fuel to the fire.
