Berlin based German/French singer-songwriter Alice Gift is back with a new song and video, “Lack Of Lust” and a recently expanded line-up introducing Lena Conley on guitar.

Alice Gift on his new single:

“I felt like writing an uptempo song with a driving, motorik-like energy.

I wanted to create a contrast between the heaviness of the subject matter, embodied by a machine-like rhythm, and light, dreamy melodies that simply float above it.

When I was composing the song, the words “Lack of Lust” immediately came to mind. They became the foundation of the song while it was still in its demo phase and also helped define its theme.

The song explores the feeling of a certain dictatorship of desire, in which we are expected to be enthusiastic about everything: eager to work, eager for sex, eager for life itself. It is a critique of the ultra-liberal mindset of constant self-optimization.

We also tend to associate a lack of desire very quickly with the idea that something must be wrong with us.

I see this song as a kind of liberation for people who feel subjected to this pressure to always want more, to always be driven by desire. A lack of desire is not the same as a lack of motivation or sadness; it may even be the beginning of a form of self-determination.”
