Obviously I love all the old idols and dolls, but many of my personal favorites never got anywhere close to fame or fortune. Back in my day, Sonny, we all scoffed at whoever was on the cover of People magazine or whichever fake rapper, or mediocre rich daughter was saturation marketed and manufactured by the man. I ususally have gone outta my way to avoid meeting heroes. When Joe Strummer came to town, I knew I wanted nothing to do with being around all the sycophantic scenesters who suckup to celebrity and obsessively jockeyed for social position who I knew would be there clamoring for his autograph. I named a kid after him, but I just aint the kinda cat to stand in line and wait to kiss the ring, no matter how big your band was in the seventies. I did have the occassion to meet some famous people like Iggy Pop and Stiv Bators and Michael Monroe and John Taylor and Chrissie Hynde in real life and am happy to say they were all lovely and totally way more down to earth than any of the friend of a friend fame fluffers who cock around as resident celebrities at the gentrification bar on Thursday nights. Maybe it’s me, I hated middle school, so when people are still acting like that in their fat fifties it seems rather unseemly to me, but whatever. Everybody is nice to a famous dude, as long as he got to make a record decades ago, or appeared on Headbanger’s Ball once, or any attractive female, but that can be a liabilityto one’s character, cause when people are nice to you all the time, you tend to forget that very few of us in this world are sharing that same experience with you. So some semi-famous folks kinda go nuts and get too dazzle drunk to ever have any real realtionships, even and espacially with people who knew them way back in the day. They get overly accustomed to like, the free drinks, and applause signs or whatever. Even happens to people with who cares white collar job titles, ya know? I remember working at a pizza joint and the big asskisser being “promoted” to “crew chief”, which just meant lead snitch, there was no raise, but he was totally ego trip proudboy bloated on the idea of having a badge. I never wanted to be a cop. ‘Couple years back, I sent $20 cash money, which is a lot for a pauper like me, a major investment really in nostalgia-representing a band whose music I loved all through my wild, wild youth, to a former fame dude who chumped me out for a t-shirt, can you believe that shit? Yeah, maybe it got “lost in the mail”, but my best vibe was….! Not good. People lose their minds. ‘Shame, too. I liked the guy when he was not Mr. Famewhore. Now? Smells like just another phony on the take. It happens. Someone who is really into prestige and property asked me why I talk about the systemic evisceration of the Bill Of Rights and boughtoff politicians’ full force support for genocide, and terror gangs funded by racist billionaires and never funny rich comedian wives, and police violence against peaceful protestors. Well, it aint cause I think it makes a difference, seven months into a holocaust, my feeble words have no power upon people who are lifelong devotees of the corrupt status quo. I get that, for sure. Especially not on collectors or merch. selling, brand building, name brand band havers. They’re busy reposting that selfie with the replacement memeber of some other band. I’m not stupid, I’m just good lookin’. Thing is, bands like Lords Of The New Church and the Alarm and Clash and eighties Little Steven, and pre sellout U2 really altered my worldview and elevated my consiousness as a kid. James Baldwin, Howard Zinn, Hunter S. Thompson, Nick Kent, and Lester Bangs, too. So I’m just honoring an old tradition. Popularity aint my mission. I aint gonna stop talking about Palestine. I think the right question is why everbody with bigger and louder and more influential platforms aint talkin’ ’bout revolution. I guess they think there aint much profit in it, no fortune to be made from it. Totally different head, man. Where I come from, activism and red blooded defense of civil liberties and egaliatrian human rights is a citizen of Earth’s minimum duty. Especially if you call yourself punk. Mercenary musician types who join whichever band has the better budget with no regard to message or heart just aint my people. Most of my favorite bands never really made it, and even the small handfull who finally found some minor level cult fame thirty years after somebody died, partly achieved that cause faceless nobodies like me kept telling everybody about ’em for thirty years. One dude I was thinking about interviewing for an Australain punk magazine ghosted me cause I spoke out about how his more famous friends used to be defenders of freedom, and human rights and still coast on their long gone laurels as working class heroes, but conspicuously went dead silent ever since they took the money. Celebrities are like a middle school fame clique and they protect their own. I get it, but again, that aint my people. I’ve never been even slightly motivated by money, never liked the way my own middle class relatives treated workers, and even the people who said they just wanted the dough for altruistic, philantropic reasons changed into unrecognizable shadows of their former selves once they became insiders. If you don’t care about basic freedom of speech, when babies are being butchered by racists with bipartisan support, what the fuck do you care about? Black cars? White rooms? Lots of shoes?
