Been talking to one of my last lifelong homies who is also impossibly imprinted with the tragic loss of the rest of our boyhood Catholic school gang, he struggles with the death and mourning just like I do. Our other fellas are gone. He’s in Toledo, I’m in no man’s land dollar store desert deadend purgatory…but at least I aint in Toledo. Been trying to get him to come out here where there is a bit more freedom in spite of the tedium, but he’s been in radio and worked for Harley Davidson, and catered for Jane’s Addiction, all kindsa stuff like that, he’s like a motorcycle cowboy, so I’m not sure he wants to come sit on a wooden bench and listen to the birds, look at the cactus, or go back to the dollar store where everything is $7, and there is only one cashier, which is pretty much all there is to do out here. The old people are really, really into their dogs. Some people get involved with like, weeding. My knees and lower back are like, “fuck you”, everytime I have to do all that shit for various employers. I started weeding my own yard two days ago but yesterday it was back in the 90’s and just too hot to weed. I have to go do shitwork for somebody later today, and it feels just like a jail on wheels. Solidarity with all the principled college students who are standing up to their no soul overpaid soldout administrators who all love genocide and fascism, as long as that big payoffs keep rollin’ in. Dude. I remember the first day of Occupy Eugene. Thousands swarmed with signs full of hope and unity. Within hours, all the town’s bourgeoise college professors and landlords were deployed to convince people that we should be discussing gender rather than income inequality, and that it would be really bad if the occupation inconvenienced the downtown hotel owners, lawyers in love, or upper class fine arts Saturday Market vendors. The upper class status quo led the protest away from the banks and into the woods, before some radicals returned to Wayne More Free Speech Plaza to again pivot back to discussing big banker accountability, corporate owned politicians, income inequality and advocating for homeless people’s rights. The city deployed bozos in hazmat suits to sweep the Free Speech Plaza and scare homeowners into believing human feces, a poop fiction, was found, and that there was a grave public health risk from ikky poor people. This cooties narrative was popularized in the polite white Honkytopia YEARS before the pandemic divided everyone with more nasty partisan class hysteria. When media would show up to film our protests, they’d only interview business owners. There seemed to be a script. Get footage of surly black kids flipping off the cameras, then find a booj Karen to complain about unsightly undesirables scaring her woke and scientific kittens. Whenever people would talk about housing first, or how both political parties only ever obeyed the banking monopolies and billionaires, the self deputized local spokesmodels would change the topic to gender or public safety, cause you know…poor people are bad. Then, they locked up all the public restrooms and started sending in cops to confiscate houseless people’s tents and backpacks. A professional Karen named Kitty Piercy kept talking about lifestyle choices and how 3000 homeless people were all just travelers, following the Dead around, or whatever, like they could in her boomer generation when she was young, as if poor people could afford VW vans or concert tickets in our generation. You can’t lock up all the public restrooms, put sharp boulders under all the underpasses, deploy gestapo to hassle the poor and call yourself a human rights city…UNLESS all the shitlib middle class people were just the same old elitist Republikkkans with prayer flags and investment properties, obediently mimicking Rachel Maddow’s CIA New Mccarthyist Russiagate bullshit, ya know? For approximately twenty five minutes, some fakeass boomer yuppies and navel studies artisanal airbandb hipsters cosplayed as activists before channeling all the righteous energy back into their vanity merchandise lines, Patron accounts, local celebrity and telling people to vote for Hillary some more. Eugene shitlibs love cops and there is very little difference between the two culture-war parties.
