MAD ONES have been playing their raw yet melodic garage punk rock for over a decade. On this new album, you’ll hear a lot of melodies from the start with opening track “What It Takes” reminding of The REPLACEMENTS. The trio gets more psychedelic in “Hydra Head” and “She Talks”. Early SOUL ASYLUM also comes to mind in “Sleepwalker” and the Canadian band also knows how to offer us some catchy power pop choruses (“Molly Moth”) and a bit of non-cliché grunge (“Down By Love”, “Drone”.) The pop side of the band mostly shows in “Stranger Stranger” and in “Mess” but still with a garage punk edge. If you’re sick of polished productions then grab this album, turn it up and you’ll feel as if you’re in a practice room with the MAD ONES. /Laurent C.
