Where I live, everybody’s getting battered by the insane twentysix percent inflation, ya know? The nice couple we used to socialize with who own an art gallery where my wife used to sell paintings have kinda gone into seclusion, I dunno how they feel about their son joining the army, but they know I am consistently always anti imperialism and antiwar. A combat decorated veteran who was hosting some Magic The Gathering games at some trendy reataurant for the bored teenagers had to cancel the whole shebang cause first the place started demanding money to let kids sit in the back and then his transmission went out on his old vehicle and he has been unable to find gainful employement after advocating for the vets at the old folks home who seemed to be abruptly dropping like flies, and for asking too many questions when the town’s physician had a stroke after a medical procedure and was sorta blacklisted by the locals, in spite of his many skill-sets. Our former neighbor is getting the business for his Southwest desert culture eccentric yard art, even though he’s in a film about the town and has many admirers.He got a ticket for being on the river alone in his canoe during lockdown that he never paid, so they arrested him and the lady who hosts the potlucks on the corner had to bail him out. He’s old and sick, coughs all the time, does not have a job and gets by on bags of expired carbs distributed by the Baptist church, he’s got a fireplace, but at certain times, he has seemed to be without electricity. Fly by night builders complained that his kooky cowboy found object scuptures are lowering the future property value of their ripoff condos they displaced the wildlife I used to photograph, to build: you know the usual ugly as fuck, garish McMansions, so city hall who’s in bed with the gentrifiers are portraying him as some kinda dangerous loon and sending code enforcers in their shiny new vehicles to harrass him. That nice Jewish lady down the street who has those cookouts I mentioned used to be a paratrooper(!) and wrote up a petition about his situation and when a dude who lives one street over and was highly qualified to be on the city’s planning commission signed it at my request, just saying property owners should be able to decorate their yards as they see fit, city hall attorneys decided he was suddenly ineligible for the job, just cause he signed that petition. I feel bad about that-he’s a bit of a male Karen forever complaining about litter on the hiking trail and fireworks upsetting his pets, but he’s a nice fellow at heart, a Jimmy Buffet party-hearty white ponytail type, all kindsa flash vehicles and tropical sjhirts and always coming home from jam band cruises and shit. That retired paratrooper lady tried to hire local lawyers to help our old street fight the city slickers showing up and pushing us aging undesirables out, but the lawyers were predictably also all in bed with the developers who disapprove of eccentric geezers with whacky rock scuptures and blue bottles on their fences and the like. It’s a real drag how we still have to hear about how the government is somehow protecting “democracy” when all of us see our rights being stripped away on the daily and none of us believe the corporate media gaslighting about the economic boom that only applies to what-twenty percent of the country-mostly big pharma, Amazon, and Wall Street Weapon Makers, and anybody who complains about it is punished by the local gentry. Our other former neighbor is in Mexico seeking help for his pancreatic cancer cause ya know, the medical establishment here is fuckedup-especially if you’re poor and can’t pay that high dollar health insurance. I told you about our old doctor, he’s paralyzed and can no longer practice medicine-they can’t keep doctors here cause the town is too poor and what doctor wants to live somewhere, if the only place to go is Wal Mart. Okay, or Tractor Supply. I remember certain politicians running on universal healthcare, who never mention that anymore. What’s up with that? Anyways, that dude is in his seventies, a real cool hippie dippy, speaks Latin, who was helping a young couple build a house until the day he fell down, and he did all kindsof shit for us, too, like helping us move when we had to relocate away from the jackedup rents in the tourist district-he put in a swamp cooler for us, changed our locks, helped me repair a window, helped teach my disabled kid how to ride a bicycle, all kinds of good stuff. He volunteers at the soup kitchen which always has a long line out the door and is real involved in the community garden, totally inspirational dude, so it’s heartbreaking that he’s been hit with this sudden health crisis. I sent some get well cards to his house but I don’t know if he’ll ever make it back to read ’em. An older artist lady we like is crestfallen they’re painting over one of her murals downtown cause some mainstream horror movie is being filmed here and the outta towners are all here presently trying to make things look even more faded, rundown, and decayed than they really are.The old ladies at the thrift store are having health problems, one suffers from vertigo and depression, the cool retired cop is always counting down the minutes til she can go get drunk at the Eagles club-very funny, feisty old battleaxes who I’ve grown to adore. Everybody is traumatized and under too much pressure and you can see it all over everyone’s faces, aside from the richies who dominate the two token tourist trap pseudo gentrified streets, but honestly, most of them are living offa old money cause none of those businesses could actually be profitable when they’re only open six fours a day four days a week, tops, most of the junk shops or faux art galleries on the boulevard are more like social outlets for old boomer retirees. Hobbies. Some of the storefronts on the main drag are only open the first Saturday of the month when they have an art walk. Oldsters showing off their stuff. Dude at the junk shop always says, “that’s not for sale” if you find something-he seems to only have the store so he can talk to females from outta town. There are people down the road from me in a big scrap metal compound that looks like a junkyard, real Sanford & Son vibes, who wheel and deal, buy shit at auction and try to resell it-old bicycles and rundown trucks, but again, I dunno how they’re really managing to scrap by. It’s a hardknock life out here among the tarilers and cactus, but at least we aint in East Palestine, or Palestine.

A man set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington today. He said he did it in protest of the genocide in Gaza. Independent journalist Talia Jane reports that she was able to obtain footage of the incident, which the unnamed man apparently recorded himself. Jane reports that the man said he is “an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force” and that he “will no longer be complicit in genocide.” After igniting he repeatedly yelled “Free Palestine.” According to Jane, a police officer showed up pointing a gun at the man’s burning body; I guess that’s just what American cops do when they aren’t sure what to do. Someone who was actually trying to save the man reportedly yelled “I don’t need guns, I need fire extinguishers!” This just might be the most American thing I have ever heard of. It’s more American than the fake bald eagle cries they put in Hollywood movies. It’s more American than monster trucks and mass shootings. You simply cannot fit more America into a single incident than a man dying a horrifying death in protest of war crimes while a first responder screams at cops to stop pointing their guns at him and go get fire extinguishers. If you were to pick a single moment in history to sum up the essence and expression of the US empire, that would be it. The New York Times reports that the man “was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.” A spokesman for the US Air Force has reportedly confirmed that the man is an active duty member. “I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest,” the man reportedly recorded himself saying before the incident. “But compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.” The nameless protestor is correct. People in Gaza are being burned alive, are suffocating to death under collapsed buildings, are having operations and amputations without anesthesia, are starving to death, are watching their loved ones die in front of them, are experiencing suffering of a degree that very few of us here in the west can even imagine. And our ruling class is absolutely attempting to normalize this for us. This isn’t even the first self-immolation we’ve seen in protest of Israel’s US-backed atrocities after October 7; back in December an unnamed protester with a Palestinian flag self-immolated outside the Israeli consulate building in Atlanta. And as I reflect on this I can’t help thinking, how many Israel supporters have self-immolated in protest of October 7? How many Israel supporters have self-immolated in protest of the super serious antisemitism crisis they claim is making Jews feel unsafe in their communities? Surely their claims are just as serious and sincere as those of Palestine supporters, no? Of course not. This has not happened and the very idea is laughable. Israel apologists insist that it is they and their favorite ethnostate who are the real victims in all this, rather than the population of Gaza who has seen tens of thousands of Palestinians annihilated while Israeli soldiers openly celebrate their mass displacement and death. But you don’t see them self-immolating; you see them cheerleading for ethnic cleansing and genocide. They wouldn’t do anything to cause themselves pain or inconvenience to promote their pet agenda. They wouldn’t even miss brunch for it. It’s a horrific thing, burning alive. I suspect that pretty much everyone who’s ever self-immolated has had serious regrets about it within the first few seconds. There’s simply nothing one can do to prepare oneself for the experience of that kind of pain, or for how long it can take them to lose consciousness after it’s started. At that point the only comfort they could possibly offer themselves is that it can’t go on forever.
