I”ve always been a culture slut since I was a small child, sitting at my grandma’s feet, watching old Elvis and Marilyn Monroe movies and Monkees reruns, so I fell for a lot of bogus propaganda and rah rah Amerikkkana bullshit until they put me in a rich Reaganite school in the early 80’s and I saw upclose how the judge’s grandson, the cheese factory ownner’s kid, the millionaire steel magnate’s grandson and the downtown nightclub owner’s kid had entirely different rules even in elementary school from people from lower class backgrounds, black folks, anyone with any kinda developmental disability. The poors were corralled into the problem child classrooms or shipped off the kid warehouses in the PMRC era, ya know, for dress code violations and shit while the wrestling and football team bullies were openly allowed to brazenly abuse anyone smaller or who did not comply with the goosestep golf shirt program. I split for NYC when I was 14-one way ticket on People’s Express airlines to Newark was $49 and ya know, you take the bus into Port Authority. Since then, I’ve been squatting, and hustling for shelter, sleeping in boiler rooms and rooftops for probably a third of my life, but now I am old and my back and knees are ruined, I got two fingers that don’t work properly and am a parent, so the adventure part of it all, the crazy idea that anything is possible and you never know, that spontaneous freedom of getting in the passenger seat of some old vehicle and lighting out on the highway for parts unknown, none of that shit feels so fun anymore. The van always breaks down, bad shit happens. I ran outta cigarettes a long time ago. It’s cold here and the only available jobs for people with my qualifications are as ranch hands and personal assistants, dishwasheres and shitworkers. I’m sick from working outside and under teeth grinding pressure to produce new income streams. Trying to sell old books and records online and turn a nickel into a dollar, day after day, with disappointed loved ones who want stuff, gets to be a real drain on the soul. Mostly, it’s the insane inflation killin’ everybody. Pig-Media gaslights the middle class with all these headlines about how great the economy is doing and how anyone suggesting Biden is outta his mind is a Russian, ya know, all that shit gets old, quick.
