I’m from the 80’s, so growing up, U2 meant everything to me and I was scarred and infuriated when the evangelical fanatics at my Baptist reform school confiscated and burned my copies of “War” and “Boy”. I loved them as much as the Cure or Depeche Mode or Duran Duran or Inxs or Mary Chain, or anybody back then, and of course, it just always pains me deeply, to even see Bono or U2 in the media ever since they decided to throw their lot in with Klaus Schwab and Bill Gates and Henry Kissinger and Barack Obama and all the shady banker warpig billionaires. It broke my heart, really cause, you know, that dude was one of the main guys, along with Joe Strummer and John Lennon and James Baldwin and Stiv Bators, who first really got me thinking beyond my torturous little personal middle school hell and suburban sadist gym dread, and got me first considering other human beings on the planet, so that’s not the guy you wanna see swanning around with all the worst murdering white devils at the top of the perverse pyramid scheme. Also, as a songwriter, and honestly, I have a pretty high opinion of my own songs, or at least, the ancient archive of punknglam stuff that’s mostly unrecorded that I accumulated over the years, I still stand in lingering awe of their back catalog of 100 absolute masterpieces. I was at Subway buying food for the family after a hard day of labor today, fifteen bucks for two sandwiches, I heard “Sunday Bloody Sunday” come on the radio and holy shit, is that song way more relevant right now, in this dire hour, than ever maybe even ever, before? You won’t hear no millionaires talking about what’s happening right now, cause nobody wants to jeopardize their bigshot careers by speaking truth, but all us little nobodies can do our part to amplify truth and remind humanity of all the lost values our nations were bullshitted by dark forces into throwing away. I mean, the last time I probably listened to U2 on purpose was last “New Year’s Day”, cause I’ll always be haunted by that line, “I will be with you again”, that meant so much to me at 13 or whatever, and hopelessly in love with a new wave chick who got me into the Smiths, but I urge everybody within the sound of my voice, to play this song today, and just look around at the world we live in, and the numb complicity of all the rich people on tv and who we used to love. I mean, I’ll probably never have a band again at this point cause I live in the desert where I care for a disabled family member, and admittedly I will never write songs as great as some of Bono’s old stuff, but I still would not trade places with him at this point. I love that old music, but I can’t even listen to it no more, ’cause of how bad he betrayed his own messages. I guess it’s ultimately just one more heartbreak, like Bernie Sanders, and many others you never heard of, but even though I’ll always have a spot in my heart for their early records, now I gotta turn my back on ’em. Money really is the devil. Remeber how moved we all were when Lou Reed and U2 were doing that Amnesty International tour? Me and my dead gonzo bartender, Andy-Andy, used to have this running gag about “roll call,” where we’d say the names of all our absent friends who were supposed to show up and convene with us, who were either joining society disappointingly, or dying young. Of course, Andy’s gone now, too, but it’s fucking crazy how the forces of evil can even silence the powerful and highly visible millionaires. I thought it was unforgivably ludicrous and weak when summa our own loved ones started sucking up to evil rich people just so they could be make believe popular, or get free drinks at the gentrification bar, way back in the grunge years. I thought it was nice when The Edge gave some poor folks guitars when Bush used his shock doctrine disaster capital shuck and jive to kick all the poor people outta new Orleans, but ya know, playing guitar is not as important as having a place to live.
