REMEMBERING LOU
Yeah you know as a young kid, I was really into Lennon, Jagger, Morrison, Bowie, Robert smith, Martin Gore, Simon LeBon, then I went through my phase for a couple of years where all I cared about was Stiv Bators, Tyla, and Circus Of Power who even befriended us, but that Lou Reed record “New York City” made a real big impression on me as someone who was trying to tell stories in song very descriptively and then, later I dug into “Transformer”, and all his old stuff. That song “Billy” always reminded me of somebody i grew up with. I kinda appreciated Lou’s contrariness, he was such a delightful grump in his own way, reminded me of my Uncle Eric who lived on 11th street and Second Ave. He gave Lester Bangs so much hell, but the two of them together were ever so entertaining. Whatever happened to Lou’s former muse-that chick Rachel? My belligerent barfly, scotch demanding, bullfrog voiced, train hopping anarchist friend Mark used to always tell me I looked like “Lou Reed’s jilted lover”. Everybody’s dead and gone, man, things aint nothing like they used to be.

…But I just loved the classic Dogs lineup so much. I took a lot of courage from Tyla to just write songs my own way and from the band who not only played great but rocked like fuck onstage. You can’t hire that from no temp. service. Hard to find real get down cowboys and pirate lords out here in the desrt wastelands anyways. I remember about five years when most everybody I knew wanted to be in the Dogs D’Amour-even the heavy metal bozos out West. Even summa the old geezer punk rockers. I’ll always have a fond and special place in my heart for Tyla, Steve, Bam and Jo Dog. They were something else. Tyla was a big hero to me back then but I do sometimes wonder if he or Lou Reed or Joe Strummer or Ian Hunter were around today, I am not sure they’d even be able to rally any musicians to back ’em up no matter how good their songs were cause nowadays everything is so make a buck ruthless get fame fast oriented, ya know? I aint got no Malc n Viv or Col. Tom or Paul & Michael Berrow, Andrew Czezowski, Bill Aucoin, Main Man, Tony Visconti or Bernie Rhodes–you dig what I’m sayin’? It’s a whole different scene if you aint got no fat cigar chomping man backing you up with moneybags. You end up fucking around on the internet or just going outside and standing in the yard, I kinda miss the carefree glam years. I used to get letters in the mail from people like Nikki Sudden and Kevin Junior sometimes, now it’s just like, bill collectors.

Ya know I really first heard them at an older friend’s apartment who used to let me come over and drink beer there and listen to records when I was underage but then a decade later, my songwriter drinking buddy Paul K. is who really insisted I did deep into Hell’s work particularly being as how I was also a Kentucky born gutter poet escapee from the midwest who’d fled to manhattan at a young age but sadly never found a band as uniquely kickass as the Voidoids were, they really were such originals. Lester Bangs was lucky to have Robert Quine helping him make records. New Yorkers always wanna make a lotta noise about how Richard Hell invented the safety pins and ripped clothing thing, but honestly I was wearing ripped clothes at that age because of Andy Taylor.
