I was never “Very Metal”, I was always more goth, new romantic, or new wave. Totally different head, man. I might love Van Halen and the Four Horsemen, but if you listen to either band, they are both really just rocknroll bands. I tried to listen to Dokken’s new song last night and it just kinda made me smile a little bit cause it reminded me of so many suburban white dudes who lift weights in the institutional states who still devotedly worship George Lynch a deedling away on his skeleton guitar on all those ballads for eighties horror films they can still identify with. I was never a real horror movie afficianado, if your real life is bloody, you end up wanting to go away from all that glorifies abuse. My idea of fun is still the Love Delegation album played real loud and a couple bottles of Andre Cold Duck, maybe a shot of rotgut vodka I got hidden in the yard. It’s funny how I ended up being in a band for over ten years with a bar brawlin’, hard livin’ playboy, accident prone, self destruction blues man, hellraiser riffmeister dude who seemed to only like AC/DC! I mean he ended up getting into summa my other bands like Zodiac Mindwarp and early Guns N Roses, the Cult, Motorhead and Circus Of Power-even some Soul Asylum, Replacements and Dramarama, but his parents were real life career bankrobbers so he was adopted from an orphanage and grew up having to fight all his life in a real gung ho midwestern gestapo cop and military white trash town, which is how he turned into a total rocknroll animal in the end, and his main band was always gonna be AC/DC. Even his singing voice which many came to recognize as part of my old band the Bastards raggedy alleycat sound, is like a cross between Bon and Brian, ya know real Bill The Cat…”YOWWW!” One of my own songs, “Born A Rocker, Die A Rocker” is in fact at least partly about my old AC/DC brother, the infamous bad boy boogieing, perpetually shirtless and badly tattooed, silver skull ringed, leather legged, honky tonkin’ all night rhythm guitar outlaw, Nasty Bastard, himself. He also adopted another of my old tunes, “Born Lonely” as a personal anthem of his many, many years ago. Me, I first discovered AC/DC ensconsed in deepest Appallacia ya know way, way down South in moonshine country, (*ever seen “Deliverance”?) at this Hitlerian bible school my family sent me to when I was about 12 or 13-they were pissedoff I couldn’t fit in with the rich kids at the honky suburban school and the sportos were enraged I dressed funny and was real obsessed with Cyndi Lauper, Prince, David Bowie and Billy Idol. Funny how everything has changed except for me. The fanatical inbred bible thumpers at that abuse school, they all warned us that it was gonna be lake of fire for eternity if we listened to AC/DC. Sadist bruisers at my Ohio middle school who bloodied my nose and shit they all liked AC/DC and Judas Priest, oblivious to Rob Halford’s double entendres, so it was not until my oldest kid’s mama brought home this pizza making ruffian accidental drunk cooking arsonist motorcycle stray that I started to associate with AC/DC, that I really started vibing with Bon and Angus, now, I see that they are like rocknroll in it’s purest form and if I did not have so many obligations, I would be elated to while away the day in a lawn chair with a big golden bottle and some stack of AC/DC tapes playing on my broken boombox forever. I like both Bon and Brian eras. I just wish the fucking corporate programmed classic rock station would play more than one song by every old band.

Hey all you eighties babies, all my beautiful and righteous and long suffering brothers and sisters and friends of the revolution, this life is such a trip, I don’t even know where the time goes anymore. All the motherfuckers I hold so precious and sacred and dear in my memory are already dead and gone, how can that be? All the fun loving, adventuresome, sponatneous, wild eyes people who used to drive me ’round are not here anymore. One dude who I spent some Christmas eves with and became close to was an old street musician, harmonica player, he could really tear up the Doors, the grunge era wannabe hipsters used to pay him like five bucks to do half their cleaning at the end of the night after last call at the ridiculous midwestern poseur college phase, grunge/alternative bar and all the fat rich kid scumbags who somehow parlayed Daddy’s money into major label credibility and pig media critical acceptance exploited the shit outta the good hearted geezer putting him on the cover of their 45. I loved that dude, we used to sit and drink draft beer after draft beer together for hours and hours, laughing and talking about old music from the blues to sixties garage punk, but you know I guess I freaked him out by kissing him one time-happened at my Tower Records job too, I hugged a newbie after a real gruelling long day where the whole overworked and exhausted if frequently inebriated record store staff had to come together to appease some district supervisor with some indepth taking store inventory shit, and it was a blizzard and the store was still packed all day with assholes buying Pearl Jam’s “Ten”, so I embraced a person in the spirit of Gabba Gabba Hey We Accept You and she marched right to the manager’s office to report how she had been non consensually objectified and violated and oppressed and it kinda bummed me out cause I was just welcoming her to the team-same with the oldster, I kissed him on the cheek cause I love him, I still love him, it was no kinda romantic gesture at all, anyone could see, but he was an old black dude from another time, and I guess the Tower employee was from a younger time. I shoulda asked her if she wanted to be hugged. I was a gregarious drunk in my early twenties, sheesh. So yeah it pained me to find out how the cherished street musician had passed away-he told my oldest kid’s mama he was upset about me kissing his cheek while sayin’ goodbye to him many years back, ahhh, would never have done anything to offend that diamond geezer intentionally-my grandfather fought WW2, had sharpnel in his forearms but he was still real affectionate with me as a kid. I hugged and kissed people I liked, cause I liked ’em-my old buddy the benevolent bouncer from that same shitass bar, Big Jim, is also sadly dead, breaks my heart-we had so many good times togather-he was like a big lovable, oversized Ozzy and sang for some mediocre kid hardcore band, had a beautiful, tragic addict girlfriend and the two of ’em used to visit me at this crackhouse squat I inhabited when another bartending buiddy of mine was in jail for arguing with his always drunk grilfriend, and his roommate the guy who saved me from nine nazis who were steeltoed boot kicking me to death was selling drugs and playing hearts, a jailbird card game, all night with his crack friends-they are all dead now, but yeah it still bums me out my harmonica homie who was taught how to play the harp by my ace best friend, the New Orleans gutter poet Mark, that he had bad things to say about me to the baby mama because I kissed and hugged him one night-how sad is that? The black community can be even more rigidly uptight homophobic than the crackers, but I get it. I’m from a pre P.C. culture and I am actually glad I never got the new rulebook college kid safespace makeover. I was heartfelt then and I plan to remain so, as much as I can, as I move through my last years. I still believe our sincerity and intention will outweigh the art police and lookin’ to make a bust kkkop culture, in the end. I been joyfully absorbing that excellent Fleshtones documentary again and kinda laughin’ about how my little bands had even worse luck than the Fleshtones, but could totally relate to the little labels going outta business everytime some label honcho expressed any interest in recording or releasing our music and how entire rooms full of merry making audiences would come up and tell us how we were the most rocknroll thing they’d ever seen and yet, we still never got to make any real records. Other people cover our old songs, but me and the main collaborator we are forgotten but not gone. Ya know I still remember much of the music and feelings and styles and ways and still naturally gravitate towards the hazy disatance of the hot pink past before grunge Tarzans and mainstream cattle, flourescent lights and P.C. rulebooks turned everything into navel studies and pro war cheerleading and formulaic garbage and rah rah identity politiics, or politricks as the Rasta say. We just seemed groovier and happier and freer in the eighties, it was my time, here and gone. Psychedlic Furs, goth, glam, new wave, post punk, paisley revival. I understood why Prince fell in love with Susannah Hoffs and her hootchie kootchie eyes and seductive voice and wrote “Manic Monday” for her where she was kissin’ Valentino, but he also wrote “Neon Telephone” for another paisely revival band, The Three O Clock, I had their old Salvation Army lp at some point, and we didn’t have youtube or the internet back then, so if you lived in any kinda farm or factory town in the flyover states, it took a long time to locate a 45 on vinyl, you had to wait for some older people to be willing to drive you to the college town two hours North to go record shopping on some quarterly Saturday. Goth dude who used to take me to the record stores back in the day, where he would buy some Ministry and Skinny Puppy and Thirwell 12 inch records and I’d buy a big stack of $1 cutout lp’s-anything vaguely glam, he moved to Arizona and is said to have become a real estate agent. I sent him a postcard last year but he never wrote back. The local lady who worked at the telephone company and was a big Beatle collector whose parents were from Liverpool I think, she just passed away, too. Where I came from, all the rebellious misfits and critical thinkers and freaky people had to kinda stick together cause just wearing a Smiths or Dead Kennedys t shirt back then was license for the big muscle preppies with the Bon Jovi perms to bruise and beat you. All those snivelling bureaucrats in the short sleeve dress shirts and clipon ties trying to break your spirit for being too new wave. The metal kids had to befriend the punk and new wave kids, cause even if you liked early Guns N Roses back there circa ’87, you were at risk of getting dragged out of a car and pummeled senseless by a pack of rabid jocks at the Friday night Arby’s parking lot. So basically, we all had to look out for each other. I mean, sure some of the suburban cowards who hung around us in black jackets would RUN when the rednecks showed up to behavior modify me for all my crimes against their wrestling team machismo or whatever. I was a gawky Joey Ramone kid in glasses, an uglier, even poorer Ducky from “Pretty In Pink” type character, but I got contacts and started wearing a lotta Dead Or Alive and Alien Sex Fiend inspired funeral party looks cause I was a rocknroll singer in the proud tradition of Iggy Pop, Stiv Bators, richard Butler and Ronald Koal, and that was just so NOT tollerated in that tank plant town, even now, thirty years later, I find it hard to imagine all those hick kids who loved Metallica, and later on, Korn and Eminem, having any remote space for this corporate media faux woke non stop tokenism Kopmala/cancel culture/transpolitation sham-they were enraged by the merest idea that somebody in their zipcode liked the Cure and not Bon Jovi. I’m just so glad I don’t live there, anymore-somedays, I puruse the newspaper back there online and there is like a murder there everyday now. So yeah I’m having some coffee here on one of these anxious, worried, post-midlife mornings fretting about the kids, makin’ lists of shit I gotta do, but in the back of my mind, all that old music is still swirling around. The “Less Than Zero” soundtrack’s on cassette and “Spin” magazine is hyping the Three O Clock, right alongside McDonna, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, and Butthole Surfers. Part of me is still paisley underground. My first guitar player from the heavy metal covers band used to call me the Flower Power Popster. I never minded. I’ll be that til doomsday. What’s so funny ’bout peace, love, and paisley trousers? Cold Duck champagne is $9 now and not even refrigerated at the store, you pay $9 and gotta bring it home to chill it.

A couple of my manlier, more hardcore, Black Flag and Circle Jerks lovin’ bandmates were really into TSOL, I kinda like their goth shit better than their male bonding fistfight hardcore or late eighties hairmetal shit but they always had some cool vibe in spite of the L.A. bully gang mentality. I’m glad Jack Grisham’s still ot there treading the boards. My old goth drummer was really into TSOL for awhile and everyday he’d insist we watch “Suburbia” and “Another State Of Mind” and “Decline Of Western Civilzation”. I probably borrowed a bit from Jack, back when I was first becoming a real frontman sharpening my teeth at old men lodges and hicktown biker barbeq’s on bills with top 40 cover bands and country bands and shit when I was 18 or 19. I remember an older punk lady I used to correspond with asking me to interview Jack some years back and me kinda politely declining, cause I read his book where he talked about how much he hated all the skinny fanzine writers and I was avoiding being 12 stepped on, but I love the dude from afar and respect his accomplishments.
