Leipzig, Germany might be famous for its goth festival but you’ll still find good punk bands there. The MELMACS offer us 10 fresh punky powerpop songs full of energy with a touch of DISTILLERS in the vocals and they will seduce you from the start with “Good Advices.” “Stage Freight” has cool American new wave and garage rock touches! The MELMACS sure know how to make you dance with ’77 punk energy and post-punk tainted bass and guitars in songs like “Can’t You See” or “Yes But”. You’ll get pure powerpop with “Low Life” and “Watch Out”, some hand clapping garage rock (“Out Of My Way”) and a bit of an 80s pop vibe in “Retrospective Life” and “Saturday Night.” The recording sounds live and tight, the way it should be for such a band. “Good Advice” ends with surf guitars and catchy backing vocals in “Carry On” and the thought that this might be my favourite 2023 powerpop album just comes to my mind. Plus, any band featuring Alf in one of their videos can only be awesome! /Laurent C.
