 EIGHTIES

The way the boomers carried The Beatles and the Kennedys in their hearts, I mean prior to 9/11-Obama-Fauchi, that’s how I feel about the eighties. I wanna go back to the Martha Quinn-1999-Rebel Yell-She’s So Unusual era, like the Cult sang on their masterpiece perfect album, “Love”, “All my beautiful friends have all gone away”…I tried to reach out to some of my my old pals and former cronies, but they’ve sadly all joined the adult world, gone over to the dark side of the force, become these blind slaves to the consensus, pleasing the inlaws, all about the Benjamins and keeping up with the Kardashians, reciting official narratives, fitting in at the sports bar. They are all afraid of being cancelled on Twitter. Many of my lifetime’s once favorite people are so invested in the system and in protecting their own personal privileges, they willingly goose step towards total fucking fascism, and therefore obviously have to avoid people like me-it’s pretty heartbreaking. I’m still all like, ROSE TATTOO! MC5, Ralph Nader, Malcolm X and Abbie Hoffman, motherfuckers. If the Good Lord is willing and the creek don’t rise, me and my most immediate family will be easin’ on down the road sometime soon to another nearby dead end desert ghost town. I got a lotta worries. Estranged loved ones, propagandized loved ones, people with health problems, and loved ones suffering from mental illness. It’s been a wild ride. I am tired. I wrote a lot of songs you should have heard by now, but they gave you like, Taylor Swift, instead. I still love all the Glitter People.

BANANARAMA

My kid’s show “Cobra Kai” rebooted “Cruel Summer” but slowed it way down and man did it ever take me back. So yeah, I read “SMASH HITS” religiously at 12 and 14 and loved it all. Duran, Prince, INXS, Blow Monkeys, Wham, Belouise Some, ABC, Scritti Politti, King-you name it-all that fey and twee kinda androgynous fake reggae and new wave shit. Paul Young? Love ‘im. Culture Club, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, English Beat, General Public, Eddie Grant, Madness, Strawberry Switchblade, Fun Boy Three, Tears For Fears, Anrde Cymone, Roxy Music-anything like that. Where I lived, there were only about three even semi pseudo cool girls. Two of ’em, actually named Lisa and Michelle, Madonna wannabes with all the silver bracelets and bangles and bleached hair and rosaries and black lace and a very impressive Siouxsie and the Banshees t shirt from the Big City, dismissed me curtly one time when I meekly approached them at the lunch table poring over their pinups of various new wave idols with funny haircuts like A-Ha, with a Valley Girl voiced, “Oh Gawd, you are like, SO QUEER!” So when I met a real cool chick through an absurd series of unlikely events who was also into post punk, new wave, art, and crazy fashion, I was naturally en thralled. We both liked U2 and the Police and Bowie and the Furs which was all edgy and semi taboo where we came from back then. I was so head over heels in love with her that other girls just became pale shadows of her. Even famous blondes like Aimee Mann or Bananarama. They all just reminded me of her-every Rick Springfield B-Side. Every Prince song. Ya know? All I did for years was listen to The Smiths and OMD and Jesus & Mary Chain and Duran and dream of her. We were both smart and arty and her dad had died and I had never known my own dad, both of us were misunderstood or rejected by our stupid peers, and both of us had friction with a series of step figures. I really loved her so much, I ended up kinda seeing her in everything for a real long time. Her mother had vetoed me instantly though, so it was all too brief. She did make me feel a lot more confident about myself though when I was a real shy weirdo kid. My next girlfriend after her was 25 and I was 15, beautiful, glamourous, queen of the after hours scene in the Lower East Side-a filmmaker. I came to know many marvelously exceptional and wonderful talented women who I learned everything I know from, but it all started with her. I can say she discovered me. She was totally my teenage Venus. I might have written a song about her. Or two.

JIMMY DORE VERSUS THE CORRUPT ESTABLISHMENT

In the last big bogus election cycle, all your Amazon Shopping shitlib friends, who bought into the window dressing of the fraudsquad told us they were going to push Biden to the left, but instead, they all went Full Pelosi, completely dropped the idea of universal healthcare or free education, and pushed the gentrified shitlibs to the police state, pro war, hardcore imperialist right. People who used to be antiwar and anti racist have become satiated with some high visibility token females, some slogans, and an “I Voted Today” sticker. College educated folks are so baffled by media that all they talk about now is Blaming Trump, enforcing gender pro nouns, and unconditionally worshipping the blue no matter who diversity squad tweeting about Trump, that shit is supposed to replace all radical action and organizing and any authentic leftish principle. U2 started off as like, anti war Martin Luther King Jr. emissaries and ended up as richman stooges for the World Economic Forum, Bill Gates and Bush/Cheney. Middleclassers care more about Obama fanclub membership than embodying or protecting any traditional liberal value. All they did is wring their hands for years blaming Trump for building a wall that Biden continues construction on. Blaming Trump for all the immigrant children human trafficked and seperated from their parents in for profit border gulags that Biden has quadrupled the population of. Blaming Trump for big giveaways to billionaires and perpetuating bogus Bush wars that Biden expands. Blaming Trump for groping young women when Biden does the same. Chastising Trump’s kids for being corrupt and inept flunkies but looking the other way when it comes to Hunter and his Azov battalion friends in the Ukraine. Shitlibs support every rightwing policy s’long as they trot out a token model to co sign it. makes it ALLL just apple pie okeydokey-drones, domestic spying, torture—they celebrate mass murder and endless war now like it’s some kinda transfriendly feminist victory, when Dems are in office doinbg all the same exact rightwing shit, they just make excuses, look the other way, don’t wanna know. Can we just talk about much they love the person in the pink dress from Hamilton and Kamala and the Obamas some more, how they got their fourth monkeypox booster for the babies in the Ukraine? Media is powerful. It’s all gone. There is nothing left of the left. Just me, Jimmy Dore and Caitlin and Nader screaming in the wind. Media is so powerful it has trained people who describe themselves as liberals and progressives to admire the Cheneys, W Bush, Big Pharma, billionaires, idle heiresses, lady torturers, Ukraine nazis, Cait Jenner, royals, the CIA, kkkops, etc. All conversations about income inequality, class, Flint water, and Citizen’s United Ruling corruption are deflected by these puppets by changing the topic to gender. Everytime. Phony Balonies-muppet show.

Biden Keeps Pledging Direct US War With China Over Taiwan

❖”The president of the United States has once again committed the US military to direct hot war with China in the event of an attack on Taiwan, a commitment that was once again walked back by his White House handlers. In a recent 60 Minutes interview, Biden was asked point-blank by CBS News’ Scott Pelley if US forces would defend Taiwan from an attack by the mainland.”Yes, if in fact there was an unprecedented attack,” Biden said.”After our interview a White House official told us US policy has not changed,” Pelly narrates after the comment. “Officially, the U.S. will not say whether American forces would defend Taiwan. But the commander-in-chief had a view of his own.””So unlike Ukraine, to be clear, sir, US Forces, US men and women would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion?” Pelley asked.”Yes,” Biden replied. This is by my count the fourth time the US president has made such remarks in transgression of his government’s standing policy of “strategic ambiguity” on this issue only to have them walked back by administration staff. This past May Biden said “yes” when asked by the press if the US would defend Taiwan militarily in the event of a Chinese invasion, adding, “That’s the commitment we made.” A White House official later stated that the president’s comments did not reflect a change in US policy. At a CNN forum in October of last year Biden responded in the affirmative when asked by an audience member if the US would intervene to defend Taiwan, and said “Yes, we have a commitment” when asked to clarify if he meant intervening against an attack from China. Again, the White House quickly clarified that “there is no change in our policy.”In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in August of last year Biden implied that the US would defend Taiwan as it would a NATO ally, saying that the US has “kept every commitment… same with Taiwan” when asked if China might be emboldened to attack the island by the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan. Again a senior administration official told the press, “Our policy with regard to Taiwan has not changed.”(It is worth noting at this time that Biden’s repeated assertion that the US has a “commitment” to defend Taiwan militarily is objectively false; that hasn’t been the case for over 40 years.)I’ve listed these statements in reverse chronological order, and you can see they get more vague the earlier they are. Now you’ve got the president clearly and explicitly saying that he will send US troops to kill and be killed in a direct hot war with China to defend Taiwan. The White House says official US policy hasn’t changed on Taiwan, but it doesn’t matter. Biden’s made clear this is his policy, and whether he would follow through or not, that’s the message that’s been conveyed to China. This isn’t dementia, it’s deliberate. https://t.co/Lg5ZpTqieF— Dave DeCamp (@DecampDave) September 19, 2022I don’t know why the US president keeps verbally committing his armed forces to a third world war against a nuclear-armed nation only to have it walked back over and over again by the administration he’s supposed to be in charge of. Is this just some neurological glitch in an aging brain which promoted war and militarism throughout its entire time in office? Is it some weird new tactic in “strategic ambiguity” to have different parts of the administration saying completely different things in totally unambiguous ways? Is Biden just a crazy warmonger? I don’t know. But what I do know is that all this chaos and confusion is happening at the worst possible time.As Brett Wilkins explains for Common Dreams, a new bill from the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee threatens to bring the world much closer to a horrific war due to the way it would upend existing US policy on China with its recognition of Taiwan as a major “non-NATO ally” as part of a commitment to send billions of dollars worth of weapons to the island. Fears of what this could unleash upon our world have caused even fairly reliable empire facilitators like Ed Markey to vote against the bill, which Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning says would “greatly shake the political foundation of China-US relations and cause extremely serious consequences to China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”This is just one of the ways that tensions with China are being ramped up with astonishing speed over Taiwan, among them also the normalization of sending an increasingly high number of US officials to Taipei in steadily rising contempt for Washington’s One China policy which has kept the peace along this flashpoint for decades. This Taiwan situation is getting uglier and uglier, much faster than many expected, and the president of the the world’s mightiest war machine is either two stupid, too bloodthirsty, too careless or too demented to navigate this situation with the sensitivity it deserves. Things never should have been allowed to get this far, and the US empire is showing us every indication that it intends to take things much, much further.” (-Caitlin Johnstone)Propaganda Warps Our Very Humanity: Notes From The Edge Of The Narrative Matrix – Caitlin Johnstone

ICICLE WORKS

I dunno if I was 13 or 14 when I first fell in love, I only know it was magical, musical, mythical, mystical, had a real life heightened reality, full blast fairytale quality, and my strange and embarrassing life had taken on this new and wide awake intensity, all the music we were listening to in those initial spark holy moments stayed with me all these years. Even if that first love was too good to be true, or I just fucked it up, or whatever happened, the songs remain in my heart. I never got over anything.

Be careful what you dream of
It may come up and surprise you
I can’t confess, my life’s a mess
I’ve come to idolise you
You liken it to walking on hot coals
I’ll keep my boots on
Wisen up and fly straight
There’s a shape on the horizon

In a hollow horse I’ll steal my way
Inside your guarded heart
So selfishly the needs I harbour
When we are apart
My past strung out behind me
Contradiction and disaster
I’m in search of charity
A union I could master

We’ll be as we are
When all the fools
Who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait

Things I chose to value
I no longer have a use for
I ridicule myself for all the things
Those symbols stood for
When vanity has played a part
In every leader’s downfall
Wait to storm the gates, what’s left
Undone to hang around for

We’ll be as we are
When all the fools
Who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait

We’ll be as we are
When all the fools
Who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait

“People ignore politics because they perceive (correctly) that neither of their country’s two mainstream political factions cares about them, and because they perceive (incorrectly) that those two mainstream political factions are the only possible framework for political action. A tremendous amount of perception management has gone in to getting people to buy into the absurd delusion that status quo politics can be used to change the status quo. People stop ignoring politics when they learn there’s a whole meaningful reality underneath that delusion.” (-Caitlin Johnstone)

PATTI SMITH

Obviously, as an outlaw singer writer lyricist performer, one of my biggest influences was Patti Smith. I remember being a dumb new wave kid and an older friend trying to turn me onto her but the Patti Smith Group were too garagey for my Duran Duran and synthpop sensibilities, back then, I was not ready for her, yet, but by the time she caught me, she REALLY got me, I was a deeply moved devotee. One of my last bands sadly fractured before we really got to accomplish what we were capable of, my dudes abandoned the promising project to hookup with other people who were much better funded than I was and it was real heartbreaking at the time, I felt really wounded about it. We had been invited to perform at some very prestigious events and two big name artists even suggested we go on tour with them as their opening act. I was planning on opening our NYC debut show with a cover version of “Privilege Set Me Free” which I always resonated with for very self evident reasons if you listen to the words. I’m not a fucking sceretary.  I can still rock like fuck.

PRAYERS FOR JEFF WATSON

I sincerely like “When You Close Your Eyes” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me”. I like all kinds of stuff the record collector/hipster snob/record store types all cringe over for being too sappy or mainstream or overproduced. I like everything from Howard Jones, Dexy’s, Nik Kershaw and Thompson Twins to the Lep’s first three albums, Night Ranger and 38 Special, who one of my former drinking buddies hilariously used to call, “The Beatles Of The South”. My buddy Matt Thorne has a music snob group online called Desert island Dickheads with people like Elliot Easton in it and they memorably all went nuts for weeks on end because I casually referred to 38 Special as power pop, arguing that some of their songs were as catchy as Rick Springfield or the Shoes, or most any skinny tie band.  I’m not being at all ironic when I say I dig the heartfelt sentiment of Night Ranger’s corny teen anthems. My old songwriter friend, Max O’Donnal from Ill-starred, Streetcar Named Disaster, and Bang Bang Satellite agrees: “Those first 3 Night Ranger records are beautiful. Camaraderie, big choruses, long hair, denim & the girl next door. They’re the 80’s teenage boy version of Norman Rockwell. “

STEVE VAI INTERVIEW “KIDS IN ACTION”

Listening to this old Vai interview remembering when the older flyover country punksters had all these rules about what punks were allowed to like-supposedly, it was forbidden to enjoy the busier, flashy guitarists like Steve Vai, Steve Stevens or Eddie Van Halen. A stray hardcore kid we knew used to bleat on and on about how I shouldn’t be “allowed” to have the long hair and makeup-we were supposed to only ever have short hair like the military, cause The Clash did, and just limit our listening habits to Thunders and Jones or some shit. The Black Flag/Circle Jerks/Suicidal Tendencies gang-like factions. You remember them, right? They were just like their sports moms-fascists. I was not born to obey conformists with many pairs of imported boots. Idiots-all those tedious fucking Minor Threat/Fugazi/DC hardcore people. I’d go to Ft. Wayne on the weekends and the aggressive males there were even worse-emboldened by their numbers-half of them were in those junior ROTC military school programs, some were neo fucking nazis, and the rest were like drunken macho, English Punk wannabes with the foot tall mohawks, talking in Clockwork Orange dialog in fake British accents, wanting to slamdance, rough house, male bond like fratboys, or just straightup outright Sid Vicious clones. They all had all these rules, which were not for me. The girls were much cooler-goths, crusties, do your own thing anarchists. Me, too, sisters. I was always a rocker, even in the punk days, not apologizing. Of course the big muscled hometown Transmarao driving suburban shredders who liked Journey and Judas Priest all called me Devo or Boy George or Joey Ramone. I always had bruises from them punching me in the hallways or locker room. I was being held hostage at the Oneida Baptist Institute in darkest Appalachia when the US FEST happened in California and Strummer and Roth famously sniped back n forth at the press conference and Dave accused them of putting iced tea in their Jack Daniels bottles-I was always like part Clash, part Van Halen. Still am, really! Then, Guns N Roses hit the mainstream like five years later, and eventually, after all the hesher mullets got used to them wearing blue eyeshadow, a couple years after that, around the time of “Paradise City”, the bandwagon chasers were all insisting I should be able to do that high pitched AXL screech, that my vocal style was not metal enough. I can’t hit the Queensryche/Iron Maiden highs-no way. More like the Mary Chain or Bators vocal range. That’s always been the great comedy of my life-too punk for metal, too metal for punk. A patriarchal privileged cys born, culture appropriating colonizer male in the oh so gentrified, navel studies collegetowns, a gutter trash pinko commie queer fag Antifa race traitor in the Midwest. I remember being real excited by “RIP” magazine in the “Appetite For Destruction” era cause they covered all those new sleaze bands coming out of Hollywood and NYC like Junkyard and Rock City Angels, Circus Of Power, and The Throbs: it was all about breaking down those barriers between punk and metal. Like me and my friends and Hanoi Rocks and later Guns N Roses and the Four Horsemen and Danzig. My own crew were part “Thrasher” magazine skaterat headbangers, a skinhead, an older 70’s scuzzpunk, a jock, and a new romantic. I had to replace about half those guys with an AC/DC barnstorming hellraiser and some Go Betweens/Replacements fan, richass pop geeks from Walden fucking Pond, and a goth-folkie telemarketing warlock, when our shithot romeo guitar hero split the scene for med school. My life has been a weird and frequently sad as fuck misadventure. I can’t believe we never even got to make a fucking record. It just kills me. I mean, I try listening to summa my ex associates’ cds and they are generally hard to sit all the way through, there’s just very little content there-just feels like rich people throwing their money around- so I guess I’m glad I don’t have boxes full of mediocre unsold cd’s someone paid for so I can be pretend famous, but man we had SONGS! Catchy fucking memorable songs, so it’s an injustice that all these people who don’t even LIKE me or my main songwriting amigo, have been able to record way way more versions of OUR SONGS in the studio than we have. That’s crazy, but it’s all just because of money-they got it and we don’t. It’s so fuckedup. So I’ve always known my friendly reminder wakeup call, prayer for peace, S.O.S. message in a bottle rants and columns are infinitely more powerful when accompanied by a heavy backbeat and the Bang A Gong riff, but the rest of the kids got swept up by the warpig juggernaut or ratrace V.I.P. room beauty contest Botox bullshit, so here we are.

If I coulda told those eighties kids that in the future rocknroll of any real rebellious kind would be removed from the airwaves, replaced with corny, say nothing, athletic post-grunge or soft porn pop-rap, and that they would all be cool with every fucking rightwing Reagan policy s’long as the fraud squad have empty lip service to gay pride and black lives mattering, that they’d have self proclaimed educated, liberal people cheering for wars and baying for more kkkops and laws against protests on the capital, PLUS the government would be spying on all their electronic communications and wiretapping everybody’s phonecalls and removing all the pay phones so if you were ever in trouble, you had to have a cellphone, and that they would roll out some phony pinup celebrities like Obama and AOC that would make everybody feel all warm and fuzzy and okeydokey with endless wars, drone mass murdering, kidnapped journalists, warehouses full of separated families near the border, and torture camps, they never would have believed me. That the only “movement” allowed by the mimosa slurping gatekeeping middleclassers was the pink triangle-rainbow flag-save the whales, virtue signaling bumper sticker bullshit, that changes nothing. Man, I always wanted Roth to reunite with the “And Smile” band and write more music! “Eat ‘Em & Smile” was Damn Good rocknroll, “Skyscraper” had some good parts, too. “I bet if you asked them our heroes would say
“Hey, we’re already gone.”

I know, somehow I know…”

DEAD KENNEDYS

I was reading the Debbie Harry autobiography and thinking to myself I would not want to be involved with the artist/illustrator, H.R. Giger, personally, though I’m a lifelong Blondie fan and apparently, Chris Stein is an occultist. Having said that, you know it was batshit crazy bonkers when the Establishment brought the hammer down on Jello Biafra for including a poster with their record that was supposedly a metaphor for consumer culture called “Penis Landscape”. While Jello almost singlehandedly took on the Capitalist Hierarchy, his bandmates decided he was too activist oriented or exerted too much control over his “Alternative Tentacles” record label or was too full of himself or whatever. Same shit always happened to me. They replaced him with a former child actor who continued trading on the brandname singing songs Jello wrote. In the 80’s, even kids who did not specifically self identify as hardcores, every punk, all of us, had Dead Kennedys albums and thought what they were saying was righteous as fuck. It was the PMRC/Top Gun/Reagan era. That was before the government think tanks infiltrated the College Left with their p.c. woke horseshit, before ignorant asshole, evil poser, boneheads crippled Jello, absurdly accusing him of selling out at the Gilman Street Collective Clubhouse. It’s a really sad mystery to me how so many of my former friends and colleagues and once seemingly radical progressives have been so media bamboozled and browbeaten by fear since 9/11, that they’ve all become these conservative, hut-two goosestepping, television believers. Russiagate, Muslim hating, official narrative spewing, Obama Thanking, pro war, police state apologist, billionaire worshippers, making excuses for AOC and Biden and the corrupt DNC rigging primaries and doing all that rightwing shit. It’s sad as fuck, and there’s not really much of an underground punk press in Murkkka anymore. Everybody’s been trained by college to buy into empty slogans and identity tokenism and superficial gesturing while obediently preserving the evil corporatist status quo. Phil fucking Donahue and John Denver were more radical than the faux wokes we got now. The righteous liberal position was, dig this, suckers: fucking ANTI CENSORSHIP, PRO FREE SPEECH. You sacrificed every single anti-war and pro free speech, leftist value for meaningless gender celebrity worship and a rainbow flag, and all outta sheer TDS. So what? Trump’s a bad man. So are all your “Classy” shitlib centerfolds. You don’t okeydoke laws against protest and mass surveillance and censorship cause you like some fucking personality. I lost all faith in you fuckers. Blueblood crunchy granolas like Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant seem like antifa black block street fightin molotov rebels compared to all my former friends. It’s so sad how everybody fell for that fucking bullshit false flag Dick Cheney propaganda. It’s gotten worse and worse, ever since. I know motherfuckin ex punks who believe that Bill Gates is their loving philanthropic, super scientific savior for social justice. It’s a crazy time to be alive. Where are the Dead Kennedys when you need ’em? Infiltrated or assassinated, killed dead by the government Cointelpro disruption programs. One by one by one. From Lenny Bruce to Phil Ochs, From Fred Hampton to Paul Wellstone. From John Lennon to Michael Hastings. Fuckin’ sad. Ya even gotta wonder about Angela Davis now. A few years ago, Peter Crowley sent me a link to Jello talking about going on one of those special trips to Israel and kinda promoting or excusing or justifying Netanyahu shit. That was a bit sad. Saw Rollins do some big Boo-yah Hoorah pro war standup special, too. What happens to motherfuckers? Ya think they get threatened? Like some men in black show up and say they gotta spew the script or else? What happened to Bernie Sanders? Ya know? Bill Hicks dead. Stiv Bators dead. Joe Strummer dead. John Trudell dead. Seth Rich murdered. Assange in captivity. Dave Chappelle, cancelled for not wanting to be in movies while wearing a dress. Not transfriendly woke enough. That’s like the Only Cause allowed by shitlibs. Pro Nouns and mandatory men in dresses. All else gets you deplatformed, demonetized, you can’t say the  things Dead Kennedys or Tupac Shakur used to say anymore. Here’s more Foo Fighters and Miley Cyrus, instead. WTF? People I grew up with don’t even organize protests against these bullshit forever wars.

“Don’t be fooled by the illusion of democracy in the U.S. A country where 3 billionaires are hoarding more wealth than half of the population is NOT democratic. The U.S. is a capitalist oligarchy where the rich get richer by exploiting workers & depriving people of basic rights.” (-Ryan Knight)

RAIN

Brothers & Sisters & Friends Of The Revolution, I don’t know what we’re gonna do to turn this ship around. Evil billionaires at the top of the capitalist pyramids have consolidated unprecedented power, seized control of nearly all media, own the politicians outtright via not just campaign donations and shit, but legalized bribery, kickbacks, cronyism, and blackmail. All I really got worked out is we’re all gonna have to overcome our most basic biases and prejudices and form new alliances, new kinds of coalitions. I used to think you could “raise people’s consciousness”, but nowadays, with the mass surveillance panopticon and complete control of both old timey tv media and the new social platforms, I think it’s unlikely we’re gonna be able to wake anybody up, particularly as how the most stubbornly compliant and conformist protectors of the status quo-the middle class college safespace gatekeeper management class and landlord people have already been marketing branded as supposedly woke, and taught that anyone to the right (or left) of Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates is a dastardly commie, I think it’s becoming ever more unlikely that we can get our former peers to ever look beyond the advertising smokescreens of the imperialist great reset agenda. It rained and rained buckets last night, there was a glorious lightning show and we saw two skunks. A baby skunk got lost amidst the mosquito net draping we had hanging in the carport for our son’s swimming pool. I love the rain but kinda dread trudging through the knee deep muddy floodlands to the post office this morning. As my comrade John Dissed says, we gotta keep finding new ways to communicate with one another outside the bullshit sports team loyalist frame and empty suit charade of right versus left.

REJECT ALL MONARCHIES, TYRANTS, DESPOTS, BILLIONAIRES, SPOOKS, & SECRET SOCIETIES

“The fawning adulation of Queen Elizabeth in the United States, which fought a revolution to get rid of the monarchy, and in Great Britain, is in direct proportion to the fear gripping a discredited, incompetent and corrupt global ruling elite.

The global oligarchs are not sure the next generation of royal sock puppets – mediocrities that include a pedophile prince and his brother, a cranky and eccentric king who accepted suitcases and bags stuffed with $3.2 million in cash from the former prime minister of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, and who has millions stashed in offshore accounts – are up to the job. Let’s hope they are right.

“Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories,” Patrick Freyne wrote last year in The Irish Times. “More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.”

Monarchy obscures the crimes of empire and wraps them in nostalgia. It exalts white supremacy and racial hierarchy. It justifies class rule. It buttresses an economic and social system that callously discards and often consigns to death those considered the lesser breeds, most of whom are people of color. The queen’s husband Prince Phillip, who died in 2021, was notorious for making racist and sexist remarks, politely explained away in the British press as “gaffes.” He described Beijing, for example, as “ghastly” during a 1986 visit and told British students: “If you stay here much longer you’ll all be slitty-eyed.

The cries of the millions of victims of empire; the thousands killedtortured, raped and imprisoned during the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya; the 13 Irish civilians gunned down in “Bloody Sunday;” the more than 4,100 First Nations children who died or went missing in Canada’s residential schools, government-sponsored institutions established to “assimilate” indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture, and the hundreds of thousands killed during the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan are drowned out by cheers for royal processions and the sacral aura an obsequious press weaves around the aristocracy. The coverage of the queen’s death is so mind-numbingly vapid — the BBC sent out a news alert on Saturday when Prince Harry and Prince William, accompanied by their wives, surveyed the floral tributes to their grandmother displayed outside Windsor Castle — that the press might as well turn over the coverage to the mythmakers and publicists employed by the royal family.

The royals are oligarchs. They are guardians of their class. The world’s largest landowners include King Mohammed VI of Morocco with 176 million acres, the HolyRoman Catholic Church with 177 million acres, the heirs of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia with 531 million acres and now, King Charles III with 6.6 billion acres of land. British monarchs are worth almost $28 billion. The British public will provide a $33 million subsidy to the Royal Family over the next two years, although the average household in the U.K. saw its income fall for the longest period since records began in 1955 and 227,000 households experience homelessness in Britain.

Royals, to the ruling class, are worth the expense. They are effective tools of subjugation. British postal and rail workers canceled planned strikes over pay and working conditions after the queen’s death. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) postponed its congress. Labour Party members poured out heartfelt tributes. Even Extinction Rebellion, which should know better, indefinitely canceled its planned “Festival of Resistance.” The BBC’s Clive Myrie dismissed Britain’s energy crisis — caused by the war in Ukraine — that has thrown millions of people into severe financial distress as “insignificant” compared with concerns over the queen’s health. The climate emergency, pandemic, the deadly folly of the U.S. and NATO’s proxy war in Ukraine, soaring inflation, the rise of neo-fascist movements and deepening social inequality will be ignored as the press spews florid encomiums to class rule. There will be 10 days of official mourning.

In 1953, Her Majesty’s Government sent three warships, along with 700 troops, to its colony British Guiana, suspended the constitution and overthrew the democratically elected government of Cheddi Jagan. Her Majesty’s Government helped to build and long supported the apartheid government in South Africa. Her Majesty’s Government savagely crushed the Mau Mau independence movement in Kenya from 1952 to 1960, herding 1.5 million Kenyans into concentration camps where many were tortured. British soldiers castrated suspected rebels and sympathizers, often with pliers, and raped girls and women. By the time India won independence in 1947 after two centuries of British colonialism, Her Majesty’s Government had looted $45 trillion from the country and violently crushed a series of uprisings, including the First War of Independence in 1857. Her Majesty’s Government carried out a dirty war to break the Greek Cypriot War of Independence from 1955 to 1959 and later in Yemen from 1962 to 1969. Torture, extrajudicial assassinations, public hangings and mass executions by the British were routine. Following a protracted lawsuit, the British government agreed to pay nearly £20 million in damages to over 5,000 victims of British abuse during war in Kenya, and in 2019 another payout was made to survivors of torture from the conflict in Cyprus. The British state attempts to obstruct lawsuits stemming from its colonial history. Its settlements are a tiny fraction of the compensation paid to British slave owners in 1835, once it — at least formally — abolished slavery.

During her 70-year reign, the queen never offered an apology or called for reparations.

The point of social hierarchy and aristocracy is to sustain a class system that makes the rest of us feel inferior. Those at the top of the social hierarchy hand out tokens for loyal service, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE). The monarchy is the bedrock of hereditary rule and inherited wealth. This caste system filters down from the Nazi-loving House of Windsor to the organs of state security and the military. It regiments society and keeps people, especially the poor and the working class, in their “proper” place.

The British ruling class clings to the mystique of royalty and fading cultural icons as James Bond, the Beatles and the BBC, along with television shows such as “Downton Abbey” — where in one episode the aristocrats and servants are convulsed in fevered anticipation when King George V and Queen Mary schedule a visit — to project a global presence. Winston Churchill’s bust remains on loan to the White House. These myth machines sustain Great Britain’s “special” relationship with the United States. Watch the satirical film In the Loop to get a sense of what this “special” relationship looks like on the inside.

It was not until the 1960s that “coloured immigrants or foreigners” were permitted to work in clerical roles in the royal household, although they had been hired as domestic servants. The royal household and its heads are legally exempt from laws that prevent race and sex discrimination, what Jonathan Cook calls “an apartheid system benefitting the Royal Family alone.” Meghan Markle, who is of mixed race and who contemplated suicide during her time as a working royal, said that an unnamed royal expressed concern about the skin color of her unborn son.

I got a taste of this suffocating snobbery in 2014 when I participated in an Oxford Union debate asking whether Edward Snowden was a hero or a traitor. I went a day early to be prepped for the debate by Julian Assange, then seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy and currently in His Majesty’s Prison Belmarsh. At a lugubrious black-tie dinner preceding the event, I sat next to a former MP who asked me two questions I had never been asked before in succession. “When did your family come to America?” he said, followed by “What schools did you attend?” My ancestors, on both sides of my family, arrived from England in the 1630s. My graduate degree is from Harvard. If I had failed to meet his litmus test, he would have acted as if I did not exist.

Those who took part in the debate – my side arguing that Snowdon was a hero narrowly won – signed a leather-bound guest book. Taking the pen, I scrawled in large letters that filled an entire page: “Never Forget that your greatest political philosopher, Thomas Paine, never went to Oxford or Cambridge.”

Paine, the author of the most widely read political essays of the 18th century, Rights of ManThe Age of Reason and Common Sense, blasted the monarchy as a con. “A French bastard landing with an armed banditti and establishing himself as King of England against the consent of the natives, is in plain terms a very paltry rascally original…The plain truth is that the antiquity of the English monarchy will not bear looking into,” he wrote of William the Conqueror. He ridiculed hereditary rule. “Of more worth is one honest man to society, and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.” He went on: “One of the strangest natural proofs of the folly of hereditary right in kings is that nature disproves it, otherwise she would not so frequently turn it into ridicule, by giving  mankind an ass for a lion.” He called the monarch “the royal brute of England.”

When the British ruling class tried to arrest Paine, he fled to France where he was one of two foreigners elected to serve as a delegate in the National Convention set up after the French Revolution. He denounced the calls to execute Louis XVI. “He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression,” Paine said. “For if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.” Unchecked legislatures, he warned, could be as despotic as unchecked monarchs. When he returned to America from France, he condemned slavery and the wealth and privilege accumulated by the new ruling class, including George Washington, who had become the richest man in the country. Even though Paine had done more than any single figure to rouse the country to overthrow the British monarchy, he was turned into a pariah, especially by the press, and forgotten. He had served his usefulness. Six mourners attended his funeral, two of whom were Black.

You can watch my talk with Cornel West and Richard Wolff on Thomas Paine here.

There is a pathetic yearning among many in the U.S. and Britain to be linked in some tangential way to royalty. White British friends often have stories about ancestors that tie them to some obscure aristocrat. Donald Trump, who fashioned his own heraldic coat of arms, was obsessed with obtaining a state visit with the queen. This desire to be part of the club, or validated by the club, is a potent force the ruling class has no intention of giving up, even if hapless King Charles III, who along with his family treated his first wife Diana with contempt, makes a mess of it.” (-Chris Hedges)

JULIAN COPE

first came to my attention via “World Shut Your Mouth” on 120 Minutes, he had been in the Teardrop Explodes and made a long series of very esoteric and farout psychedelic records, the whole Black Sheep crusade really reminded me of me and my old gang before we all shot off like hard cracked billiard balls in different directions. Real cool stuff. I wanna do it all again. Sundays are such a slow moving grind in this still hot dead end desert ghost ville, I almost hope my part time employer calls with some kooky chore-yesterday it was picking up sticks and moving piles of wooden sticks with rusty nails and floorboards and shit from one property to another and rolling some impossibly heavy cement planters full of dirt into a spider ridden garage. I’m so bored and restless on a day like today-of course, what I really wanna be doing is making new music, I put some signs up on a local billboard. Hard to recruit a ragged army from the half crazed skeletons and desert rats around here, but I keep on searchin’. I’m gonna buy the kid some drums once we get relocated. I just came back indoors from a long walk in the hot sun, ya know people ask me with how I cope with the monotony of such a rundown dead broke deadend trailer town, town. Photography, I guess. It’s always a sad thing when you bring the camera but forget the memory card. I take pictures of the river and rocks and flowers and clouds. My shirtless teen just informed me it is 9/11. Apparently twenty one days ago today my middle kid’s mom memorably first informed me she “did not want to be part of a couple”. I think I stuck around for another year after that still trying hopelessly to stay a part of my children’s lives, but sadly, it did not work out-she held all the cards and power, moved ’em cross country, bonded ’em to a long series of strangers and by the time I got out there, the younger one had mostly forgotten me-just another of her mom’s many suitor ex employees. So yeah 9/11 was an inside job. The war on terror was a big bullshit lie. There were no WMD’s and W later laughed about it. Rumsfeld had given a speech about missing trillions the day before. Art students in the basement, Lucky Silverstein, Prince Bandar, Marvin Bush, Cheney called off Norad. No wingspan in the Pentagon hole. All bullshit. I thought you knew. Figure out Building #7. Everything since has been more lies, fictions, propaganda, bullshit, made up puppet stars like Zelensky and Obama and AOC and fascism…with a handful of preassigned and vetted, controlled opposition, red carpet diversity muppets. Teen Beat celebrity pinup politicians. Marionettes. Just More Fuckin’ Endless Dick Cheney, Rebranded. Now…the daughter. UGH! Once upon a time I found myself doing some handy work for a wealthy rancher/airbandb heiress house hoarder who every time I was ever around her, she always mentioned “the patriarchy” as her way of deflecting from the fact that she holds all this surplus property and unearned power and excess privilege-it’s triggering for me cause I’ve had issues with these heiresses before-they won’t get off their daddy’s gravy train but they resent the power he has over their mom and sibling’s lives, so they transfer all those resentments and hostilities neatly over to their underling employees or tenants, particularly in Honkytopia, Oregon-Gender is Religion there. Wealthy rancher/airbandb heiress house hoarders always seem to gravitate towards some kinda new age religion that reassures them they deserve all their power, and a spa day, and “market value rent” even if it’s just residual karma from all their charitable acts in past lives. Don’t call them bossy-call them greedhead oppressor capitalists.

Remember when John Denver, Frank Zappa, Jello Biafra, Dee Snider, all those people got tied up in court and shit and had to go to Washington to fight for free speech? Since 9/11, the corporate monoploy/state media brainwash media has been so fucking crazy relentless, that people who call themselves “Progressives” and also, on the right, some so called “Patriots” all fuckin’ cheerlead for censorship and top down, uniparty, authoritarian, narrative control. That’s fuckedup. All you have to do is get some Karen to say some shit’s Offensive. The police state not only spies on, but controls the discussions on all social media platforms, they monopolize the new media just like they monopolized legacy media in 1996. Meanwhile, like Julian Cope, I also try to rally all the black sheep.

POISON HEART

Somebody seems to have stolen and relocated one of my kid’s semi-feral outdoor cats again and I have my suspicions it is probably an old grump with some mental health problems who lives nearby and has done that kind of thing before. He hates cats and loud kids and probably wants us to move, which, you know, we wouldn’t mind relocating at this point-ideally to some place more secluded with less OCD busybodies cussing at animals and trying to keep control over nature, wildlife, the whole terra firma at all times, because we’re not that wild about the changes we see happening in the neighborhood, with the developers putting up these real big, ugly, overnight McMansions hoping to quote “attract big California tech money”, and the cops and code enforcers and even a private drone company all being deployed by a corrupt city hall in bed with the shady developers to put the screws to the elderly home owners so they’ll be willing to sell cheap to the development swindlers. If we were more mobile, we’d already be gone, but ya know you can’t pay rent with two minimum wage incomes in this price gouge capitalist got mine, greedhead culture.

I remember thinking way back in the eighties how if I could only get a job and pay my own rent, I wouldn’t have to eat all that shit from the hate mob jealous cows of conformity, who hated anyone with principles, or style of their own, and forever felt obliged by Law to yell shit like, “Joey Ramone! and “Boy George!” whenever they saw me walking down the hallway. It just enraged all the morons that I wore a little hair product and hoop earrings and black smeared eye makeup. I thought that middle school shit would end when I finally turned 18 and the juvie authorities would have to leave me alone. I was wrong, middle school went on forever-pretty much everyone I knew as a kid, is basically just like they were back then-if they sucked up to anyone they thought was rich n popular in seventh grade, they are frequently still doing that shit in their fifties. If they were greedy hoarders who had a whole pack of unopened Marlboros but would rather smoke yours…if they were a deadbeat mooch who refused to ever wash a plate or pay rent in 1985, oftentimes, they’re still like that when approaching retirement age. If they only hung around you for access to girls and beer or sponging up the fine ideas, don’t expect they became more capable of being respectful, kind, loyal, or loving in their old age. I’m STILL that hated Joey Ramone from the bad part of town that aint about courtin’ favor with those dorks on the hill. Fuck those people. I don’t wanna be like the gentrification tv watchers. Don’t need no makeover, aint trying to be the Hot Topic or become Urban Outfitted, you dig? Aint my job to obey the squares and copycat clones cause you think they’re somehow second or third hand fake famous or vaguely associated with some kind of wealth or VIP privilege. I don’t even like those people. Certainly not their absolutely shite, redundant, embarrassingly corny joke bands. One of those suburbanized hipster fauxpunks compared a 45 I made 24 years ago to “Halfway To Sanity” era Ramones like that was supposedly this devastating putdown. I love all that stuff. Dee Dee was important. Joey, too, all of ’em. I was not that into CJ, but he helped ’em soldier on, so, yaknow God Bless Us, Every Cretin. Yeah I’m still a Ramone, at heart. I ranaway to NYC as a kid and all those guys and Lou Reed and Quentin Crisp and Stiv and Cheetah and Warhol and Haring and Basquait were all still around-ya know? the world was just a much groovier place, before the ruling class, inside job billionaires like Chertoff and Kerry and Bloomberg and Giulianis kicked all the poor people out of the once cool cities and tried to force their dumb rich kids on us, like ya know-The Strokes and Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. No thanks. Breaks my heart the Ramones all felt like bitter, and unsuccessful before they died, in spite of touring the world and getting to make all those great records just cause they never made ya know like Bruce Springsteen money, but they gave so much strength and inspiration to so many people. You won’t see their kind get access to the mainstream airwaves, probably ever again. Just more bullshit fake rich people making bullshit fake music, that says nothing, means nothing, makes no difference, at all-just puts you to sleep. I’m so sick of all the fucking sucky bullshit muzak and dumbshit motherfuckers, who can’t tell the difference, anyway. I mean, I was never even really into like, Rancid, or D-Generation, but they suddenly seem like The Beatles and The Stones compared to the shit they try to force on us now. Back in the eighties Joey was still like throwing these real cool Acid Glitter Trashball Extravaganzas in NYC with all star lineups like Debbie Harry, Alison Gordy, Mike Monroe’s Blonde & Blue, Stevie Klasson and the Oddbalss, NYC punk heroes galore! Man those crazy hoo haw spontaneous shindigs inspired by own infamously epic all night house parties way back at our old bandhouse, Paradise Lost where people would come from three different states on the weekends to perform, jam, collaborate and sometimes the hootenannies might last for weeks. Joey just had so much heart-even when he was dyin’-his last record was called. “Don’t Worry About Me”! Ya know? Whenever I get real depressed, I watch like, Dee Dee interviews on Youtube…maybe some Kid Creole, Big Audio Dynamite and Zapp…”I Believe In Miracles” has carried this old jetboy through an awful lot of hardships and heartaches over the years, I’ll tell you that. “Poison Heart” says it all!

KISS DOLLS

Yeah we sat through like three and a half ours of KISS last night. As usual, a tightly controlled, robotic Gene n Paul narrative about how everybody just loves Eric and Tommy their compliant and proficient substitute stand-ins for Peter and Ace. Only missteps they ever admit are Gene’s “ego trip”, the “Phantom…” clunker that was supposed to be “Star Wars Meets A Hard Day’s Night”, and the ice skater clothes and generic power ballads of the Bon Jovi era. Did you hear Paul’s awful Amerikkkan idol garbage side project FM Station or whatever it was? Just HORRIBLE. I did appreciate how they paid honest tribute to the influence of the NY Dolls even if the last word on the subject was Paul insisting KISS blew them away musically. Lots of people disagree. If their primary statement, their manifesto was “rocknroll all night and party everyday”, how ya gonna be mad at Ace and Peter for livin’ it? Gene probably liked that “Nookie” song, what he cares about is groupies and merchandising, cashing in. I mean he told his son Nick not to work on his own car-that’s a job for the little people. So yeah, basically you already know the story-Gene’s a dick, but him and Doc McGhee are very good at making big bucks, they do admit that their cokehead eraly collaborators Ezrin and Aucoin were at least as fucked up as Ace and Peter and are probably equally responsible for all their early successes-Paul’s a lovable, mostly affable cartoon character who overcame the odds and fought his way to the top but basically is Gene’s real wife, he acts like Edith to Gene’s Archie Bunker. To Gene’s credit, I find summa their toys and swag more entertaining than much of their latter day music and from watching his old tv show, it sems clear that the guy loves his family, if not Ace and Peter. ACE is the rocknollingest motherfucker, I’ve said it from day one, maybe your preferred guitar player knows more fancy scales but ACE’S GUITAR SHOOTS FIREBALLS! Peter Chris sounds like a demanding primadonna sometimes with the Andy Summers like touring demands, but I’m one of those old dudes who only cares about the original KISS, whatever their merchandise juggernaut big machine, money printing operations look like now, same with GUNS N ROSES. They might have super fame and stadiums full of commercial country or sports fans who don’t even like real rocknroll, who never heard of Steven Adler, bot none of these rich guys in all the wigs with the employee ringer bands write good songs now. Did you hear that “Absurd” song Guns N Roses put out, trying to sound like UK Subs? Just was not very good, was it? Kinda thing we all mighta wrote in the basement circa 87, fake English accent and everything. Not interested in KISS without Ace Frehley and Peter Criss and I’m not interested in Guns N Roses without Steven and Izzy, yes I know they are all superfamous money making capitalist hundred dollar t shirt peddlers, but I’m still into bands having good songs. I probably heard “Sweet Child” enough for a lifetime. IZZY or bust. Funny thing about most Murkkkans is how we don’t really give a fuck about originality, artistry or sincerity or talent or truth or soul. Murkkkans were all trained from birth to unconditionally worship wealth and power-whether that is the evil Davos Billionaires, or John Gotti, some monarch or Saudi despot, some no talent plagiarist imitators, people just follow the whiff of moolah. None more so than Moneybags Gene. His personal logo is even a dollar sign. At least they provided some hardworking entertainment value way back in the 70’s-there is nothing, now, rocknroll wise, in the corporate media but that illuminati pop garbage. Blink 182, Dave Grohl. Ick.

BLEEDING HEART GRAFFITI

One of the last records that I remember reached any kind of mainstream audience at all that still had a lotta heart and soul and rocked was the underrated self titled CULT lp that came out around the same time I made the foolish mistake of moving back to the midwest hoping to peacefully co parent with my oldest kid’s baby mama. I shoulda known better, I never fit in in the midwest and can’t stand the preppie privatee school motherfuckers and extra large frat bros who ran everything back there. But Ian and Billy were still saying shit that was real and true even in the godless grunge years.

“Beyond Good & Evil” was the cd me and my old sideman Nasty Bastard were blaring as we were howling down the highway, goin’ back to Boston to record at our old pop pal’s studio when the van naturally broke down in the middle of nowhere but some old farmer very kindly brought us some beer and canvas chairs and said we could feel free to camp overnight and swim in his pond. A friend of Nasty’s put me on a bus and took the van in for repairs that took forever, so while he was tied up fixing the van, I was able to record maybe four or five songs with the rest of our old lineup but we coulda-shoulda-woulda accomplished so much more had Nasty been with me for the second and third parts of that trip. I got about two good songs out of the whole escapade. A couple of those tunes were compared by Ringo Kidd to Nikki Sudden which is a high compliment in my world. “It’s just the truth in your eyes…” Both mine and Nasty’s ex wives dumped us after that failed mission to record our album that was supposed to be called “Born Again To Lose”. Crazy world. I still standby almost all our old songs from that era. Always haunted by the what if…’s…What if we would’ve finished those records, what if fans of say, Black Halos and The Hangmen and Jim Jones Revue got to hear those old songs fully fleshed out, etc etc It’s the stuff of a whole lotta heartbreak and tears.

 REV. PAUL S. CUNNINGHAM

I guess I made friends with the brimstone preachin’ cowboy Rev. years ago on social media and we’ve been keeping in touch for a long time now, we got a lot in common, really. I’ve always loved the real original, stand alone voices from the wilderness, he don’t really sound like no one but himself which is pretty fuckin’ cool if you ask me. Musically speaking, I guess there are some glints of Jo Dog’s elegant bluesy leads from way back in the “Graveyard Of Empty Bottles era”. I love the pianos on “Pictures & Gasoline”. Very deep and soulful cat, insanely talented. Do you like the Rolling Stones or Tom Waits? Like I told somebody in an e-mail, this is haunted and inspired songwriting. “Brothers Of The Darkness” is a gunfighter ballad or trail song from the bottom of the black bottle. I’m just gonna keep talkin’ about this character’s tunes cause I recognize him as one of the most remarkably gifted of my generations’ outlaw colleagues. That guitar solo in “Brothers Of The Darkness” is a thing of real subtle and profound beauty. His slide guitar playing is so Stonesy and the piano is beautiful.

We’re Being Trained To Worry About ‘Russian Propaganda’ While Drowning In US Propaganda
One of the weirdest, most insane things happening today is the way the entire western world is being trained to freak out about “Russian propaganda” — which barely exists in the west — while ignoring the fact that we are spending every day marinating in billions of dollars worth of US empire propaganda.CNN has an article out titled “Darya Dugina’s death provides a glimpse into Russia’s vast disinformation machine — and the influential women fronting it” on the recently assassinated daughter of Alexander Dugin, a Russian political thinker of wildly exaggerated influence. The article uses Dugina’s assassination to further stoke its audience’s ever-growing panic about Russian disinformation, quickly becoming a commentary on Russia’s entire propaganda network without bothering to articulate how Dugina’s death “provides a glimpse” into its workings.Without the slightest hint of self-reflection or irony, this CNN article about Russian propaganda cites as its two main experts a think tanker from the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab and a think tanker from the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). The Atlantic Council is a NATO narrative management firm that is funded by NATO, the US government, the UK government, various other US-aligned states, the arms industry, and numerous billionaires. CEPA’s donor list looks similar to the Atlantic Council’s and includes US arms manufacturers and the US government through both the US State Department and the CIA cutout National Endowment for Democracy. Both are used to promote the information interests of the US-centralized power alliance in Europe and North America. As we’ve discussed previously, the way news media cite corrupt warmongering think tanks to discuss foreign policy without ever mentioning their immense conflicts of interests is plainly journalistic malpractice. But this practice is ubiquitous throughout the western news media, the because western news media are propaganda outlets. In which ⁦@CNN⁩ chooses to smear the assassinated Dugina as a “disinformation” purveyor (rather than just someone with a “pro-Kremlin world view”). Note that not only doesn’t the word “terrorism” appear in this long article, not even “assassination”. https://t.co/Fx6WCoDkNH— Left  on the News (@leftiblog) August 30, 2022The article cites RT, the Internet Research Agency, and something called United World International as examples of “Russia’s vast disinformation machine,” despite every one of those institutions having a degree of influence that is the exact opposite of “vast” in the western world. In 2017 RT accounted for all of 0.04 percent of total TV viewership in the UK. A study found that the much-touted US “election interference” campaign by the Internet Research Agency in 2016 consisted mostly of posts that had nothing to do with the election and comprised “approximately 1 out of 23,000 pieces of content” seen on Facebook. I’d be surprised if anyone reading this has ever even heard of United World International, and CNN’s own article acknowledges that before that outlet was banned from western social media its accounts only ever had a few thousand followers.Compare those paltry numbers to the nonstop barrage of empire propaganda that westerners are fed every day of their lives by every news media outlet of significant influence — whose coverage of the Ukraine war has eclipsed that of all recent wars the US has been directly involved in — and it becomes clear that this message we’re being fed that we all need to panic about Russian propaganda is itself propaganda. The CNN write-up criticizes RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan for saying in 2012 that “When Russia is at war, we are, of course, on the side of Russia.” As though CNN ever sides against the US during US wars. Not only does CNN consistently take the side of the US government in every single war, it conducts brazen propaganda operations to help start new ones, like the time it staged a scripted interview with a small Syrian child calling for US military interventionism in Syria. The only difference between Russian state media and US state media is that Russian state media is honest about what it is.This story disparaging @TheGrayzoneNews approvingly cites “Ross Burley, co-founder of the Centre for Information Resilience.”Politico’s @e_casalicchio doesn’t mention that @rwdburley is a UK state propaganda operative who has called for Grayzone to be censored. Why omit that? https://t.co/Qo1L5w4DKp— Aaron Maté (@aaronjmate) August 29, 2022This wave of nonsensical, artificially created panic about Russian disinformation has been used to dismiss any and all information which comes out that casts the US empire and its lackeys in a negative light as Russian propaganda or the work of Russian agents. We’ve seen this over and over again, from the way Julian Assange has been falsely cast as a Kremlin operative to the way indie media are falsely framed as Russian propaganda operations. The latest example of this deception is the way incriminating leaked emails of prominent British figures published by The Grayzone have been dismissed in a new Politico hit piece as a dishonest representation of emails obtained by Russian hackers per “the Russian playbook”. Grayzone staff hastened to point out that not only does the Politico article fail to grapple with the rather important question of what the leaked emails actually contain, but that it failed to mention that its primary source is a UK Foreign Office veteran and psyops specialist who has a publicly stated vendetta to get The Grayzone censored online. The manufactured hysteria about a nonexistent epidemic of Russian propaganda in the west has people so blinkered and confused that it’s become impossible to criticize the most powerful government in the world for its planet-threatening brinkmanship with a rival nuclear superpower on any online forum without getting accused of being a secret agent for the Kremlin. My own social media notifications are continuously lit up with accusations of Putin loyalty and rubles in my bank account just for criticizing the most dangerous impulses of the most powerful and destructive government on earth, despite never having worked for Russia or any other government. What’s funny about all this is that by constantly warning of the dangers of Russian propaganda, imperial spinmeisters are admitting that they know it’s possible to manipulate public thought at mass scale using media. They’re just lying about who’s doing it to us.In reality, they’re not worried about Russian propaganda. “Russian propaganda” is just a spooky story we are told to keep us from noticing that our civilization is saturated in US propaganda. (-Caitlin Johnstone)

SPORTS, NEWS, & WEATHER DESK:

The Ukraine conflict has plunged the world into a geopolitical crisis. But this is not, as the writer Patrick Lawrence points out, the only crisis. The war in Ukraine has exacerbated the crisis within the western press, inflicting damage that he believes is ultimately irreparable. The press in the U.S. and most of Europe slavishly echoes the opinions of a ruling elite and oversees a public discourse that is often unhinged from the real world. It openly discredits or censors anything that counters the dominant narrative about Ukraine, however factual. For example, on August 4, Amnesty International published a report titled “Ukrainian fighting tactics endanger civilians.” The report charged Ukrainian forces with putting civilians at risk by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas, including in schools and hospitals, a violating the laws of war. To call out Ukrainian for war crimes, however well documented, saw the press and the ruling elites come down in fury on Amnesty International. The head of Amnesty International’s Kyiv office resigned, calling the report “a tool of Russian propaganda.” In one of the many broadsides the Royal United Services Institute in London wrote that “The amnesty report demonstrates a weak understanding of the laws of armed conflict, no understanding of military operations, and indulges in insinuations without supplying supporting evidence.” It is nearly impossible to question the virtues of Ukraine’s government and military. Those that do are attacked and banned from social media. How did this happen?  Why is a position on the war in Ukraine the litmus test for who gets to have a voice and who does not? Why should a position on Ukraine justify censorship? Joining me to discuss these questions is Patrick Lawrence who a correspondent and columnist for nearly thirty years for the Far Eastern Economic Review was, the International Herald Tribune, and The New Yorker. He is the author of Somebody Else’s Century: East and West in a Post-Western World and Time No Longer: America After the American Century.

BACKS OF THE POOR

My ole lady threw her back out while doing heavy lifting for our sometime local employer and I feel pretty bad for her. Developers are driving us off our street with plans to spend the next few years with big machines and dirt movers and scandalously shady home builders building a big series of overnight popup McMansions. They start the hammering early nowadays. We got outdoor cats and a kid with a disability all this traffic puts at risk, there’s supposed to be like 200 new people across the street here and we kinda feel the squeeze. The old unwelcoming gentrification pressure I been subjected to since about ’95. When the haves wanna push out all the have nots. They wanna make the owners sell these lots to the big investors. That’s why we’ve had to take these new hard labor heavy lifting jobs as a side hustle moving shit for rich people. We gotta hustle up money to relocate. This rickety old desert trailer has been good to us these last few years but with the leaky roofs, freaky hermit neighbors, lack of furnace and creepy builders, it’s feeling like it might be time to pull up our circus tent stakes and ya know, kinda ease on down the road, like in that old Keith song. “I Will Walk Before They Make Me Run.” Hopefully, if the Good Lord’s willing and the crick don’t rise, we can be resettled somewhere safe by Christmas, but it’s gonna require some luck, longshot potential landlord cooperation and a mammoth amount of work and worry and more heavy fucking lifting and landscaping which is not my idea of good times, but our oversized teenager has outgrown the 53 year old trailer. The creeps in authority here have also put us all on notice by repeatedly deploying cops and code enforcer goon squads on our street to intimidate the elderly an disabled residents.

Our neurotic, needy, big fat cat pawed his way into the bedroom and woke me up about five thirty this morning and I was not ready to get up, but the neighbor’s confused rooster is cockadooing and I fed some outdoor feral cats and looked up at the night stars. My bored teenager is asking me to remember my own bored teenager shenanigans and I was telling him about how fun it was when we had two turntables and a mixer so we could make real mix tapes for people. My friends Sean and Fred had all the old, old, old school early rap 12 inches, ya know just shelves and shelves of ’em, and ya know like Midnight Star eighties soul and R & B. “Ready For The World” and Lisa Lisa-right? LL Cool J, Whodini, Ice T, Kurtis Blow and Run DMC. I can’t tell him much of the real story, he’s just nowheres near ready for all that, but I had a friend who I met in detention hall who was like a Biz Markie charismatic beatbox-he was a big onery rascal who used to sneak his daddy’s Cadillac out at night, we’d push it down the block then jump in and drive it out towards deep suburbia where the girls with the Farrah hairdos all lived. We’d be knocking quietly at their windows like in that Shaun Cassidy song, “Hey Deanie Won’t You Come Out Tonight”. They seldom did, but sometimes, there were about three girls from the local church, who would met us under the underpass by the railroad tracks. The one named Missy would always bring her hair brush with her everywhere. I guess she had some bad misadventures in more recent years, she shocked us all with so many of her choices. They all did, really. Yikes. Some of ’em got involved ya know with like the piss town drug culture, some others became Joe Job work a day, paycheck chasers, buying houses, building empires, buying real estate and all that shit. Two classes of people you really don’t wanna get involved with much are slave wanting empire havers and drug culture. You always get burned. I remember when there was no such thing as free long distance, ya know, pre NSA, pre I-Phones, you had to pay these fuckedup sky high phone bills, so I got a couple old homies still mad at me for using their phones while trying to contact people in faraway cities trying to organize shows for my greasy hoodlums bands and look for drummers and all that kinda stuff. Even the motherfuckers I reimbursed fully way back in the olden daze still go round complaining about it decades later. We all watched Duran Duran and Inxs on MTV and later on, VH1 kindof started off as the soft rock easy listening MTV, all Michael Bolton bullshit and like adult mush ala Phil Collins. MTV, man. That was everything, where we saw Billy Idol and Prince, Van Halen, and Adam Ant. “120 Minutes” and “Headbanger’s Ball”. Hard to believe there was a time when we could see bands like Lords Of The New Church and Zodiac Mindwarp on fucking television. Now everything is like New World Order Metaverse Goggles bullshit manufactured unreality shows about belting the Whitney Houston high note, it’s all artless, like Olympics sports competition. A world of fabricated suckiness. Imagine being such a crazy tyrannical overlord, you intentionally make show biz puppets that suck on purpose. We used to hear songs like, “Open Your Eyes” and “London calling”, but now it’s like all designed to dumb you down and numb you out, get you to not read, just be a mindlessly compliant slave, purchase, obey, die. As Stiv sang in “Ready To Snap”: “they’ll take their pills and they’ll never question why”. I never, never understood all these guys who would actually watch televised sports. I used to get stuck in hotel rooms with my grandfather watching golf for hours on trips to the Motor City to buy cars for his Smalltown, Kentucky car dealership. Kentucky is all about college basketball, like Ohio is obsessed with college and pro football. Not me, man. I was into Prince and Bowie and all those kooky new romantics, even the real daffy stuff like ABC and Visage.  I remember liking “The Surreal Life” and “Rotten TV” in later years, before they took good music off the airwaves and replaced it with those fuckedup fucking unlistenable “I Want It That Way” make no sense, expensive tennis shoes boybands, monarch programmed stripper pop, and aspirational beach house lifestyle programming like “90210” and “Friends”, “Dawson’s Creek”, “the Hills” and “Kardashians” that glorify idle rich kids and all that awful shit like Katy Perry candy jingles and like, all those hundreds of different creepy occult pop videos, Madonna’s daughter just did one where she and some dude are cavorting around on Houdini’s grave. I been outta step with faux popular culture for years and years now. I don’t even believe any of it is really popular, it’s just bad bullshit thrust upon us against our will by the creepy sociopaths and billionaire tech-lords who own the pig-media. My kid has Autism but all those gnarly Youtube clips of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” seem to make dope dealing and dirty lawyering and crooked copping all seem glamourous to him and his former classmates. Sheesh, and then there’s all that illuminati-pop garbage.

I-94 Recordings

HEY SHADOW

My old Detroit friend, I-94 Recordings honcho in chief, Jim Rinn, sent me some kinda digital version of a Candy Snatchers single. He’s the cat who brought you Cranford Nix Jr., the Trash Brats, and those essential and historic “DRUNK ON ROCK” compilations! Also this whole Detroit B Side series everybody’s talkin’ about. Check out all his boss swag. I’m a notorious luddite and tend to shun new tech, I’m still like a cassette tapes and records and cd’s kinda guy. I can’t really figure out all that Dropbox shit ya know I never had an I-Pod or I-Phone or any of that, but I used to see the Candy Snatchers perform pretty frequently way way back when I still went to see live rock shows. The dead guy was rude to me once, he was a good player, wild onstage, really flailed about and banged his head like a super adrenalized righteous glam stomper, but ya know he was all jackedup on the road and they were the excessively inebriated darlings of the underground back then, so he was feeling a disproportionate sense of self importance and made some ridiculous comment about my girlfriend at the time, all these live fast/die young tough guy punks were always trying to sortof be swaggering lady killers back then, but really, they were sometimes just coming off like brainless heavy metal dickheads. Locker room shit talkers. I will say they stormed the stage like crazy motherfuckers, grossed everybody out with the bloodshed. Larry reminded me of Danzig a little bit, or Elvis, actually, he had undeniable raw power. The fad chasing, disposable income enjoying, “garage rock” bandwagon, vinyl buying, Midwestern hipster scenesters who sucked up to the ripoff recordstore owner who inherited some money and thought he was Martin Chess or some shit, they were all pinned to the back wall of the bar, actually cowering, meekly afraid of the Candy Snatchers!!! I remember how they’d all stand in the back with their Rolling Rocks, totally intimidated by those guys. I guess one of those guys got in trouble with the law for something. The one with the sunglasses after dark who used to talk to me about Hanoi Rocks all the time. They kindof reminded me of the Dwarves and Electric Frankenstein, ya know? But my main fave band from that whole scene, before punk rock died was, of course, THE HUMPERS. The Humpers put on the best shows AND wrote the best songs. Of course we also all loved Scott Deluxe Drake‘s solo bands and his brother’s group, The Joneses, and their spinoff project, The Vice Principals. That was our favorite kinda rocknroll. The wild, untamed kind! I also remember Knox and The Vibrators putting on a great show back then, they played at an illegal after hours type venue and were such a blast, me and a spiked black jacketed, now sadly dead, punk rocker named Jude (RIP) and a hard drinking crusty street kid I loved who worked at my ex girlfriend’s pizza place named Howie (RIP) who is also gone too soon, were like singing in the mic with Knox all night, I think he  played all of “Pure Mania” live that night. These new younger guys Jonesy are pretty good throwbacks to the sad last daze of like Teengenerate and the Rock & Fucking Roll record label ran by Martin Mcmartin and those Sal Electric Frankenstein Fist Full Of Rock compilations. I kinda like ’em. ‘Lot like me n my friends when we were young, and dumb and joyfully playing a lotta Hollyood Brats and NY Dolls influenced basement band bubblegum, really. They look like they’re having a lot of fun. Shades of Doctor Boogie or the Sweet Things. Dig! I think they’re kinda fun, personally.

THE ORIGIN OF STUDENT DEBT: REAGAN ADVISER WARNED FREE COLLEGE WOULD CREATE A DANGEROUS “EDUCATED PROLETARIAT”

In 1970, Roger Freeman, who also worked for Nixon, revealed the right’s motivation for coming decades of attacks on higher education.

WITH THE vociferous debate over President Joe Biden’s announcement that the federal government will cancel a portion of outstanding student debt, it’s important to understand how Americans came to owe the current cumulative total of more than $1.6 trillion for higher education.

In 1970, Ronald Reagan was running for reelection as governor of California. He had first won in 1966 with confrontational rhetoric toward the University of California public college system and executed confrontational policies when in office. In May 1970, Reagan had shut down all 28 UC and Cal State campuses in the midst of student protests against the Vietnam War and the U.S. bombing of Cambodia. On October 29, less than a week before the election, his education adviser Roger A. Freeman spoke at a press conference to defend him.

Freeman’s remarks were reported the next day in the San Francisco Chronicle under the headline “Professor Sees Peril in Education.” According to the Chronicle article, Freeman said, “We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat. … That’s dynamite! We have to be selective on who we allow [to go to college].”

“If not,” Freeman continued, “we will have a large number of highly trained and unemployed people.” Freeman also said — taking a highly idiosyncratic perspective on the cause of fascism —“that’s what happened in Germany. I saw it happen.”

Freeman was born in 1904 in Vienna, Austria, and emigrated to the United States after the rise of Hitler. An economist who became a longtime fixture in conservative politics, he served on the White House staff during both the Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon administrations. In 1970 he was seconded from the Nixon administration to work on Reagan’s campaign. He was also a senior fellow at Stanford’s conservative Hoover Institution. In one of his books, he asked “can Western Civilization survive” what he believed to be excessive government spending on education, Social Security, etc.

A core theme of Reagan’s first gubernatorial campaign in 1966 was resentment toward California’s public colleges, in particular UC Berkeley, with Reagan repeatedly vowing “to clean up the mess” there. Berkeley, then nearly free to attend for California residents, had become a national center of organizing against the Vietnam War. Deep anxiety about this reached the highest levels of the U.S. government. John McCone, the head of the CIA, requested a meeting with J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, to discuss “communist influence” at Berkeley, a situation that “definitely required some corrective action.”

The success of Reagan’s attacks on California public colleges inspired conservative politicians across the U.S. Nixon decried “campus revolt.” Spiro Agnew, his vice president, proclaimed that thanks to open admissions policies, “unqualified students are being swept into college on the wave of the new socialism.”

Prominent conservative intellectuals also took up the charge. Privately one worried that free education “may be producing a positively dangerous class situation” by raising the expectations of working-class students. Another referred to college students as “a parasite feeding on the rest of society” who exhibited a “failure to understand and to appreciate the crucial role played [by] the reward-punishment structure of the market.” The answer was “to close off the parasitic option.”

In practice, this meant to the National Review, a “system of full tuition charges supplemented by loans which students must pay out of their future income.”

In retrospect, this period was the clear turning point in America’s policies toward higher education. For decades, there had been enthusiastic bipartisan agreement that states should fund high-quality public colleges so that their youth could receive higher education for free or nearly so. That has now vanished. In 1968, California residents paid a $300 yearly fee to attend Berkeley, the equivalent of about $2,000 now. Now tuition at Berkeley is $15,000, with total yearly student costs reaching almost $40,000.

Student debt, which had played a minor role in American life through the 1960s, increased during the Reagan administration and then shot up after the 2007-2009 Great Recession as states made huge cuts to funding for their college systems.

Joe Biden’s Role in Creating the Student Debt Crisis Stretches Back to the 1970s

That brings us to today. Biden’s actions, while positive, are merely a Band-Aid on a crisis 50 years in the making. In 1822, founding father James Madison wrote to a friend that “the liberal appropriations made by the Legislature of Kentucky for a general system of Education cannot be too much applauded. … Enlightened patriotism … is now providing for the State a Plan of Education embracing every class of Citizens.”

“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance,” Madison explained, “and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” Freeman and Reagan and their compatriots agreed with Madison’s perspective but wanted to prevent Americans from gaining this power. If we want to take another path, the U.S. will have to recover a vision of a well-educated populace not as a terrible threat, but as a positive force that makes the nation better for everyone — and so should largely be paid for by all of us.
