CELEBRITY TELETHON offers us an interesting mix of glam rock, country and garage punk. While opener “Skin Flicks” has a bubblegum glam vibe, “Undercover” could have been released by an obscure 60s garage revivalist band. On the other hand, “Neighborhood Regulars” mixes grunge and the VELVET UNDERGOUND with jazzy arrangements. You’ll also find cinematic atmospheres in “(A Return To) Salem’s Lot”) and in the underground country tune “Film Noir”. The country influence can also be heard in songs like “How’d You Get Here From So Far?” or “Celebrity Telethon Theme” and you’ll even hear a bit of rhythm and blues in “Rock’n’Roll Matinee” and in “The Rumors Are True”. Things get quieter on the Lou Reed-esque “Latkes & Brisket” and then the album finishes with a psychedelic country punk cover of Stonewall Jackson’s “I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water”. Well you won’t hear such an original album everyday. Give it a try! /Laurent C.
