New York City’s cult ’77 punk band The TESTORS were well known for their raw sound and chaotic rock’n’roll live performances at Max’s Kansas City or CBGB’s. Noise punk before it existed with Sonny Vincent as a frontman. Sonny later toured in Europe a lot in the early 00s and you probably saw him live if you were around. This archival release is out on vinyl and captures the raw power of the band’s earliest recordings. Songs like “You Don’t Break My Heart”, “Purpose”or “Voltaire” has a bit of DEAD BOYS in them and “Hey You” or “Let’s Get Zooed Out” are quite catchy in a RAMONES way. On the other hand, “I See”, “Madra’s Prison”or “Don’t Tell Me” were already announcing the faster 80s punk wave to come and “MK Ultra”, “Awmaw” and “Stall” even had a post-punk vibe before it even existed. You’ll also find rare footage from a 1979 Irving Plaza show, featuring candid moments with Johnny Thunders and Stiv Bators. This is not a lost album. It’s a carefully curated collection, assembled by Green Noise Records and they say it well “This is recognition, not nostalgia!” /Laurent C.
