BEASTII is a musical monster founded by “Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983” author and former Swimsuit Addition guitarist and singer Jen Dot (aka Jen B.Larson) in 2016. BEASTII started in Chicago as a darkwave, electronic, lo-fi bedroom pop band. Jen recorded the initial EP Love Harder over a few months, using a combination of live and electronic instruments. She had her friend, Chris Lee, master it. After numerous show offers, Jen and Chris decided to play a live
set. To keep it simple, straightforward, and true to their roots as live musicians, Jen and Chris transformed the band into a high-energy 4-piece, combining sounds from early ’80s post-punk, ’60s surf and garage rock, and ’90s alternative and grunge. Maureen Neer (Soddy Daisy and Bloodhype) and Becca Nisbet (Swimsuit Addition and The Baby Magic) joined them on bass and guitar, respectively. After
a few shows, they pared BEASTII down to a 3-piece, and Neer, who w anted toconcentrate on her new project Bloodyhype, was replaced with Dom D’Amico (who later joined MAMA and Mystery Actions).
In 2017, BEASTII put out their first LP Can’t Wait, which received praise from, respected music reviewers. In 2019, BEASTII combined forces with another project of Jen’s, the Dots, and played a few shows with Mikhael Hell (who later joined Mystery Actions), visual artist Oliv Roe (who later joined Bench), and Asha Adisa (Orisun), on bass, keys, and guitar. Then the pandemic hit. After the pandemic, Jen and Chris dusted off their instruments, recouped their unrecorded tunes, and put a new line-up together, bringing Neer back to play live and adding
multidisciplinary artist Jesse Fevvers on guitar. Longtime collaborators and friends Jesse and Jen combined their talents and began a long writing process, and the result is BEASTII‘s new album, Follower. They brought Asha Adisa back in to record backing vocals and keys and tapped Kai Black (Orisun, Bussy Kween Power Trip) to play bass. Chris Lee recorded the album at the VCR.
With the incorporation of its moving parts and members, BEASTII has grown more limbs, eyes, and heads. It returns to honor its darkwave and electro roots, fusing them with the energetic punk presence of its live performance.
