I had a fuckedup childhood like a lot of people, and found my early consolation in the songs of the Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, and the Monkees before eventually graduating to the MC5 and Iggy, Deadboys, the Clash. Remember that sequel they did to “Fast Times”, called, “The Wild Life” with the Bananarama and Eddie Van Halen soundtrack? I loved it when I was a crazy pre teen misfit, just discovering new wave and shit. It was the P.M.R.C. era and my little tank plant town was brimming with anti rock hysteria and oppressive opposition to anything androgynous-the exact opposite of the enforced faux wokeness we have now. Uptight Phil Donahue watching sports parents would see Annie Lennox, Prince, or Boy George on the cover of magazines at the checkout aisle and just be seething with rage over all the extremely forbidden and still absolutely taboo gender bending. The winning quarterbacks were taught to crush and humiliate anyone with a glint of dazzle. Me, I had found David Bowie, so it was not gonna go that well for me. My ragtag outcasts and myself were the punkest things that place had ever seen in spite of really being pretty normal art kids by any sane or rational coastal big city standard. I had started wearing makeup ala Chrissie Hynde and Phil Oakey in the Human League “Fascination” video and hassled my pal who was preppie into saying he’d play bass in my future villain band. We liked Duran Duran and Van Halen and that drove the hardon juvie authorities and their future gung ho jackboots gangsters for capitalism apeshit for some reason. I also fell in love with a girl from the other side of the tracks who went from being a shy, depressed Smiths and Cure fan to blossoming into a blinding Bardot like beauty in a matter of maybe two or three years. Her parents hated me, all the males became obsessed with her. My friend’s parents also hated me, I was seen as the ringleader, all the adults branded me the bad influence and neighborhood threat cause I read library books and hungout with some older acidhead hippie dude at an old used record store in the next town over, and that guy was teaching me about the blues, the Stooges, sixties garage punk. I also really loved the J. Geils Band. “Pyromania”, all kinda shit, really, but the rich metalhead macho guys who’d never believe Rob Halford was gay always came after anybody who they called Flock Of Seagulls or Boy George, it was punishing. I got beatup, detention halled, paddled, for being too “disruptive”. Same with my high I.Q. weirdo friends. Funny part is how my bad reputation in that loathsome state where they manufacture the fratboys was still so bloody that even years later, after quitting school for good when I turned 17, my twenty seven year old adult Ramones listening companions that still lived at home with their parents still had their crazy folks blaming me for corrupting their good boys with my eyeliner and Dead Or Alive records, even though those guys were ten years older and buying me beer and cigarettes while I was underage! True story.

I had gone to a rich white honkified middle school way back in the Reagan 80’s where the horrible rich parents would buy their kids guns and crossbows for Christmas, encouraging them to hunt and wrestle and win football games and pick on anyone smaller or different from themselves. I was friends with two really smart and sensitive and creative and musically gifted brothers who were both just born natural guitar talents and we commenced to form our first garage band together even though the kid who wanted to be our drummer, the son of the school psychologist, was never able to find any actual drums. Back then, there was no real discussion about Autism or being on any kinda spectrum, but they had like, the problem child class, called learning disabilities, where anybody offbeat was corralled, kinda like the detention hall in “Some Kind Of Wonderful”. It was there, I believe, I first met another really talented but rebellious kid who looked like Billy idol but played guitar like Randy Rhoades, and it was him who came up with the name for our band, Harlot. That kid was a real provocative, loudmouthed, trouble causing, Jim Morrison worshipping, attention seeking, Nietzsche quoting, tornado of fun, so I gravitated straight to him, even though that brought me even more unwanted attention from the jocks and young republicans. I was really into all the sixties music back then, you know, we were all just finding out about punk and new wave and much of the rebel rock we initially bonded over was still you know, basically Billy Idol, the Stones, Van Halen, and the Doors. More rock punks than punk rockers. I was just discovering styling products and outraged the school by being the first one to pierce my ears, got a jailhouse tattoo at Baptist reform school, you know like the Rose Tattoo song “Scarred For Life”. That’s still my main jam. I had my own version of that song way before we heard any Australian sleaze punk imports called “Bad Tattoo”, mine went: “got a bad tattoo of my high school lover, now it’s black and it’s blue and it’s too big to cover, now I can’t get rid of you, I got a bad tattoo.” That was when I was about 18 and co written with my dearly deaprted old bassplayer Cowboy Bobby Cloyd in our Dogs D’Amour phase at my first purple apartment. We knew some conservative girls from Pennsylvania who would let us come to their parent’s ranch house and drink beer and play our amateur hour Misfits and Cramps and Judas Priest covers when their parents were gone. That’s about as far as we got, me and those guys. As we got older, we drifted apart as the brothers passed among the normies for the most part, having cars and rich parents and Tommy Hilfiger clothes, the Billy idol lookalike fell in love with a goth girl and kinda disappeared.

By the time we all turned 18, my original “gifted classroom” comrades, all three of ’em were somehow coaxed into joining the military(!!!) and becoming snipers for the Bush family and helping steal oil from Iraq. That really bummed me out, cause I fvividly recall trying to talk ’em all out of it and the before and after photographs are shocking, always felt so guilty like I let the team down when I had failed to steer them away from becoming stormtroopers of empire. One of ’em killed himself after following orders in the first Gulf War. I loved all those guys, they were my first friends, really. The Depeche Mode guy also killed himself after decades of smalltown punishment and never ending abuse, pinballing back n forth between the factory, the jail, church, and the psychward. That was my first gang, ya know, my crew, my squad. Skateboard guy and I carried on and later found suitable replacements and even got ourselves a drummer which was hard to do where we came from. I naturally think of all those guys at Christmastime, and so many other fellow travelers who’ve come and gone ever since, it’s a real weird ride, growing up as a resistor in the belly of the beast. I met one of those guys years later when he was working as a bouncer at the hometown sports bar and I was back there working at the record store and living at a $95 a week motel, he was unrecognizable, big burly, biker ex marine, ya know? I was excited to meet him again and hoped to rekindle the good old flame from boyhood, but those crimes they all carried out in the service of the oil companies had changed them forever, and sadly, we no longer spoke the same language. I still look for summa those guys on the internet from time to time and send out postcards and was heartened to see how my little brother became a famous wildlife photographer, but yeah, it’s crazy how someone goes from wanting to be like Eddie Van Halen to wanting to be a sniper or gangster for capitalism, still breaks my heart. I’m a jet all the way. After the first class of wouldbe punknroll rebels were seduced by the dark side, I recruited and trained eight or nine more guttersnipe goth gangs for rocknroll stardumb and consciousness raising mischief and loud racket making but neglected to warn them how much sacrifice is involved in trying to make original rocknroll that reaches hearts in a big tech monopoly propaganda age of douchebag ambition and I-phone selfie middle school hierarchies. I did not know that lots of songs we love were written by people we never heard of who died in the gutter, but stolen by greedhead publishers and drugdealer nigtclub promotors, and fatcat sons of CEO’s, and half the time we’d drive somewhere to perform and get broken down on the side of the road or not get paid by ripoff barowners or some producer would get obsessed with somebody in the band’s stormy girlfriend, or we’d encounter all kindsa inside job sabotage from another drummer’s capitalist family who disapproved of our power to the people messages or makeup or straightup poverty, there’s always been a mob mentality that wants to shutdown and silence voices from the defiant revolutionary proletariat underground saying, “wait a second, this is all fake as fuck, let’s do something different!” We lost some good people along the way to sudden death or office jobs workin’ for the man. Only a few diehards still remain and I salute them for their service to actual principles and healthy impulses that say we must resist the sadistic bullies and stormtroopers and merchants of death and depopulation despots of this fuckedup, evil, Honky Death Machine. Myself, I’m old and tired and have to go to work today. Don’t wanna see anybody, hate interacting with the zombified world of tv watching kow it all middle class assholes. Just turned fucking 54 and fuckedup knees and trembling hands from years of violence and abandonment issues and houselessness and eviction and grief related peer death traumas.
