BULEMICS

I was years late to the internet party, when my ex so called pseudo peers were sitting at home online shopping, or asking the bartender to turn the jukebox off at the bar so they could watch tv, I thought the culture was on the spiral. Shit like Britney, boy bands, and Toby Keith were supposedly populat ya know? All that corporate professional punque/pop garbage. Sit-Coms and dramadies. Adult cartoons. I wanted nothing to do with any of that shit, let alone I-phone selfies at kereoke night with the local hometown zipcode celebs playing records at the trendy gentrification bar. Man all of a sudden there were like 100 Johnny Thunders COVER BANDS everywhere you looked, still a lotta post grunge warbling at the corny nightclubs where they purged punks and replaced ’em with grunge/alternatives. I’m just now discovering summa the nineties punk bands they all liked way back in the heyday of “Hit List” magazine. Libertine weren’t bad…and that group, the Favors from Columbus–they had a real memorable song called “Leave L.A. Alone” that was reminscent of Faster Pussycat’s better written stuff. Bulemics seemed to have a little bit of sleazy corner bar/streetpunk spirit ala the Dwarves and original dude fronted, Smack influenced, back alley, dirty syringed Barbed Wire Dolls. I kinda liked a lotta those like, Junk records bands and shit, but it was hard for me to be happy for all the latest punk n trash rockers releasing prolific vinyl discographies on hip boutique labels cause when I was two steps from the move myself, ya know, it always seemed to get thawarted somehow and it was usually an inside job and you gotta look at how the cards always fall and face the hard truth. Sucks. Anyways, whene everybody else was goin’ on and on about Zeke, Streetwalkin” Cheetahs, B Movie Rats,Candy Snatchers, the Hookers and Nashville Pussy, I guess I was still listening to the Comatones and Motorcycle Boy, Joe Strummer, and like, the Beasts Of Bourbon. I kinda have my thing. I was never even into Nirvana. I had a girlfriend who loved the Smashing Pumpkins but we did not last very long. had some wild partis at her house. Her family were in the intelligence community. Her dad had a plane and a helicopter in the backyard. I drank too much back then. Her sisters hippie friends loved when my crew came over and we threw these allnight singalong acoustic jam hootenannies. Shoutout to Archaeologist metalhead Tall Tony. And Ellen and Artie who like to party.

“I came of age with Sinead’s “The Lion and the Cobra.” I owned it on vinyl, cassette and cd and still do. Listening to that album as loud as possible on the stereo in my old beat up Ford Escort in the parking lot of a park we spent the bulk of our time in and singing along with my girlfriends, also as loud as possible while the boys kept their distance and looked a little scared was a right of passage we created that was inspired by that flawless album and Sinead’s energy and spirit.

As Sinead aged and her songs grew from her experiences as a woman, a human and an artist, I grew along with her. I’m not sure how many of my poems were written while her songs played in my room and the background of my mind. I’ve had her back on constant rotation the last five years of my life because I needed her songs, her voice, the thing I could always see and hear in her, telling us it’s okay to be angry and hurt and broken. It’s okay. You’re allowed. I worried for her a lot the last many years whenever she would be back in the spotlight. I was looking forward to the new songs I heard she’d been working on. I really wanted to hear what she had to say to us these days. I knew it would be important. I even thought maybe I’d be able to see her perform live in the next few years. I had hoped we’d keep growing older together.

If you get the chance, turn on “The Lion and the Cobra.” Turn it up really loud. I bet you’ll remember every word even if it’s been awhile. Turn the volume down a little, but not too much and listen then to all her other masterpieces. That’s what I’ll be doing the next few days.” (-Angie)
