Frequently my favorite band throughout my life, along with the Comatones, Beasts Of Bourbon, Clash, Gunfire Dance, Hanoi Rocks and Pretenders is GENERATION X who influened so many great people including the Jacobites and Flesh For Lulu and Duran Duran. They wrote exceptionally great lyrics and the musicianship was fucking almost unparrallelled, unless you’re talking ’bout maybe Only Ones or Pretenders. I find myself along alot these days, for endless hours of contemplating mortality and the ephemeral nature of this passing universe, watching people die and others rush to ransack and liquidate and take ownership of their personal affects, I dunno, man, it all kinda keeps me cryin’. On those days when the sun is shining just right or I see the hummingbirds visiting me out in the garden, I do still throb with that universal pulse to wanna live, to fight back, to rage against the dying of the light and when I need some external reminder, or validation of my own core principles and encoragement to continue the lifelong hard battle to get almost nowhere, forty years later and it’s still just me and the mop bucket on someone elses turf, one band I turn to even after all these bruising deacdes of failure and humiliation and being locked out of that phony baloney rich kid, trust fund, pay to play muzak scene, is still Generation X, they make me think of my old friends, my early loves, gimme some truth, everything I believe in, really. Those guys are going on tour as GENERATION SEX and I’m thrilled to know they can still deliver the goods at their ripe old ages, forever inspiring to me. I still have mad love for Derwood and Laff, as well!!! I started off “Wild Wild Youth”, but now I’m like, “Wild Wild Elderly”. My own band were known in our old Allston rock city era as the Original Suffering Bastards, we got nowhere with no drummer or recording budget, but we did end up writing a lot of songs that multiple artists in different cities still cover or record versions of and you know as much as that shit can bring you down, not having access to platforms that other people do, I still gotta take it as some kinda fuckedup compliment that we did impact so many different people with our songs. I spend a pleasant afternoon at a basement record store I worked at talking to Lars about Hanoi Rocks and the Clash. I liked him. I guess he’s a big star in some circles, but you know he’s a true punk cause he did not act like that. He acted like me and my crusty punk fulltime rebel, consientious objector dropout friends at the divebar, in different circumstances, he mighta ended up in our band of Bastards. The Original Suffering ones. Aside from his success and like, tattoo fame celebrity, we got a lot in common, really. I love his stuff. I think he’s real cool. Personally I vibe with the Bastards more than Rancid though I thought “Ruby Soho” was pretty good, so was “I Don’t Belong Here” by Libertine and “Hot Pink Stereo” by Dimestore Haloes and “Leave L.A. Alone” by the Favors outta Columbus..I remember my old bassplayer Useless Bastard also known as Kid Loser always used to ask, “Who you gotta know to rock in this town?” Whoever they were, we did not know them.
