ANDY ROURKE HAS DIED

The Smiths meant everything to me as a kid, when my first holy wild true love played me “Ask” and kissed me unexpectedly in her mother’s kitchen with the Quik bunny cup and the Metric Wonder Cup on the counter while other boys from the neighborhood were always knocking on the door in hot pursuit of her. I ended up sortof idealizing our brief flash of romantic togetherness and wrote a lot of good songs about her, but I was never able to win her heart with poetry, bloodshed and guitars. I was always sad Morrissey became so powerful he was unable to reunite the Smiths. The lads having to sue the main two for back royalties and going to court and shit slinging in the press was all so very sad and beneath these great artistic collaborators. I love his solo bands but there was something quite magical about the Smiths. Thank You for your service, Andy Rourke. Morrissey has said some kind words about him upon his death. Mostly I’m feeling like another integral part of my fondest childhood memories has departed and it is exhausting to confront so much death. An endless procession of sad goodbyes is how I described it in an old song of mine. I miss them all-my heroes like Strummer and Bators and Bowie and Prince, my grandparents, my aunt, Mark Blum the actor, all the dead homies. The long goners who assimilated into straight society and the girl from Woodhaven Lane.
