I knew a guy, truly quite gifted, whose life and potential were derailed by a nightmarish experience in a famous Ohio university. He was placed in a bedbug-infested dorm room, then flippantly accused of plagiarism by a fool of a professor. My friend’s takes and papers were so good, sometimes stunningly good, that mediocre professors doubted that any freshman could be so brilliant. Long story short, he left utterly discouraged and never to return. Every aspect of the experience served to tear him down. I had similar experiences myself with insecure petty-tyrant professors, and galling as were such experiences, I just plowed on through for the degree. This all happened long ago, and things have only gotten worse while they’re now charging so many tens of thousands it’s insane. I’ve tried over the years to convince my friend to write or try again but he was permanently scarred by the experience. As with everything else, I guarantee that this is far from unique or isolated.
