I grew up in a real backwater shithole town, kinda place where everybody’s parents were either super rich doctors or tank plant workers, or just dead poor broken home and always gone working. Drugs flooded the overcopped black part of town and that was not by accident. I’d just gotten outta detention hall and been the victim of several violent smear the queer lynchmob beatdowns cause the people of that community were not impressed with my Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop influenced punk band or wild furcoats and heavy makeup stylings. They’d never heard of Iggy Pop, let alone Martin Degville or Pete Burns or Joe Strummer. Sports town, very rightwing, super uptight and conformist. What kind of sports car did your parents buy you when you turned 16, how many colors of golf shirts and designer jeans do you own? That was the dominant culture. The churches were all about rah rah military indoctrination. The cartoons you’ve seen about the fanatical sports Chrsitians being way more Reagan/Rambo than “give up your riches” and serve the poor Jesus were never exaggerations. Lot of abuse took place back in that town. Most everybody I grew up with is damaged by it. My hideout was at a little used record store about four miles outta town, in a nearby rural suburb. Dude behind the counter was an old head sixties hippie Abbie Hoffman freak brother who lived on weed, malt liquor, acid, booze and frozen fish sticks. He got me into all kindsa crazy 60’s garage punk I’d never heard of as a kid, and surf music, and old blues records. We lived together for awhile when his parents both died and the usual bankers scum came with kkkops to repo his childhood home, then his dog died. Both our lives were like old blues songs. My place was a small second floor apartment downtown and my friends and I had painted the mutha purple. It was a trip living with that brother cause we kinda came from different generations. He was an old time hippie freak and I was a weirdo 17 year old dropout into goth and new wave. He watched wrestling, read wrestling magazines, took notes, mnemorzied stats, said it was the only honest sport. WCW. Old school. I ended up loving Ric The Nature Boy Flair cause that was the most rocknroll enteratiner of the lot-equal parts Steven Tyler and David Lee Roth. I’d been known to wear some floor length glittery bath robes and feather boas myself, which did not make me very popular among the high school football teams of that place. He had to take two buses to get home from wor each day so he was alawys dead tired on arrival and I’d be yammering to him about Inxs and the Replacements and Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Bauhaus and all the kooky synth pop I was into back then, he’d drop the dusty needle into the grooves of some old Robert Johnson or Howlin’ Wolf vinyl and I’d drink beer and he’d smoke pot and we’d laugh together all night. It was a golden time for me. I had some girlfriends, was putting my first bands together. We also built a band around my record store guru where my guys backed him up and he wore a black suit and Brillcreamed his hair up high and played a little harp and sang some old blus nuggets, like the 13th Floor Elevators and shit. We’d open up for countrybands in nearby biker towns. I was really into MTV and of course, Mojo Nixon was all over it cause he wrote that attention seeker song about lusting for Martha Quinn who I’s brushed with in NYC when I was a runaway punk following people like Stiv Bators and John Spacely around the lower East Side. When I relocated to Hollywood seeking a lonhaired rocknroll band in the last hours of the Guns N Roses era, I was invited by his record company honcho to a record release party for Mojo’s Christmas album and they said there was an open bar so I was there with belles on. We ended up being filmed by the local tv news cameras as we jumped around the Cat N Fiddle fountain like yeehaw midwestern sports fans. I saw him again when he relocated to the midwest for a radio job. He had the hots for one of my impossible ex girlfriends like every celebrity who came to town back the. I loved Mojo. He was that character all the time, really. I always enjoyed loudish show people, we partied together pretyy hard back in the day. Whatever happened to Skid Roper? I loved the whole cowpunk scene.Last night, I saw a real sad documentary about Ric The Nature Boy Flair and when I got back on the computer, I read that Mojo Nixon had died after a good night out with his friends. My record store buddy died bout five years back. Also my Catholic school drinking buddy, and my boyhood bassplayer, my original guitar player’s mom who was like a surrogate mother to me, too, it’s gotten lonely which is why my desert town maximum torch and twang cowpunk band is called the Loneliness, it’s a tough time to be alive, ya know? I was never into the social engineer bullshit fake muzak ordouchebag fratboy Axe cologne and boobjob lifestyle programming, I knida got off the mainstream hotgarbage culture ride with “Material Girl”, been on my own and underground fpr a mighty long time. But yeah I can ever so fondly recall some nights of hollwrin’ in the alley with all those real gone guys. I don’t wanna go to work toady. I want to stay home and play loud music and get drunk, so, ya know, work it is. I kinda hate my job. My knees are fucked up and I’m too old for all this shitworker blue collar bullshit, but there aint no record store jobs no more. I still love Martha Quinn.
