Takin’ the melatonin so I can sleep through the night with all the images of carnage in my head, wakeup and it’s back to the grinding grind, total alination, and money worries, ya know? The old hicks in Kentucky always say the ancient platitudes about working they heard from their elders and it all seems to be about resignation and accepting one’s slavery. My grandfather said the only song he ever liked was “16 Tons”, ya know? So all them played out cliches come through my thoughts as I do the hustle for the money every day, but I’m what you’d call a bad slave, an outdoor slave, a runaway slave ya know? I’ve never been that good at it. I went to a fuckedup school as a kid where the fat oaf sons of Republikkkans would bellow some corny shit to me that they similarly had either gotten from social engineering propaganda subrext movies or their obnoxious abuser oaf parents. “This aint the 60’s! we have goals” was one. Who says that, but an empire protecting bully future administrator or corrections guard, ya know? That was a bad place, only maybe two or three people got out. Several killed themselves, became military indoctrinated beyond recognition, or had some awful racist kids with some Pabst and Potpie motorcycle redneck. I did have an older friend from the Catholic school who’d see the blue eyed preps from the big houses knock me off my girl’s bike, or knock a milkshake outta my hand, and he beat up the big bruiser loudmouth who terrorized me, so I let him run his stolen BMX bicycle chop shop outta some milkcrates underneath my mom’s stairs, she was never home and didn’t notice. Everytime he got bored, he’d wheel a couple richkid BMX bikes over from the wall behind Aladdin’s Castle arcade in the mall where nobody ever chained their bike and mix and match the parts until they were unidentifiable and then he’d resell ’em. He was a good kid at heart, you could see he’d taken some beatings, he was a survivor, finally got his own one room apartment in the ghetto by the railroad tracks when he got fed up with whatever was going on at his A Type Dad or his marine step-dad’s houses. His mom hated the idea of me, like all the parents from that town. Even in like, the fourth grade when we moved there, I was writing my school reports about Brian Jones or Jim Morrison, and I got into Bowie and Prince several years before any of the other kids where we lived. It was the styling product, earrings and makeup that enraged all these assemblyline identical golf shirt and feather hair Transmaro sports car drivers where we came from. Sometimes, I’d run from them and get away, sometimes I’d stand and fight and lose badly, but it was alawys gonna be a hassle being seen in public, if you refused to assimilate into the sporto sports and white truck manly capitalist Borg, back there. So yeah, my older friend Danny, he was a great ally of mine, he could fight and also played guitar. I got him and two or three other weedly heavy metal guitar Randy Rhoades to plug in their little Fender Champ amplifiers in my mom’s basement and I’d sing my angsty punk rebel lyrics over all their noisy deedling, through someone’s borrowed bass amp. We never got far with it, these guys, cause as I mentioned, were all forbidden from consorting with me. One time Dan broke his arm while performing some showoff BMX stunts on the ramp and bike trails he created behind the Sharon Drive Inn and the old people breakfast spot where they sold like, jelly in Mason jar’s and shit to the oldsters, The Old Barn Out Back, and my mom had to take him to the emergency room. His mom thought I was a bad influence on him, in spite of his being older, cause you know, I dressed funny and talked about books and records rather than sports and weapons. His parents gave him and his younger brother guns and ammo at Christmas and they were expected to hunt. I’m pretty sure at some point Dan was even on the Catholic school wrestling team with all the tough bruisers from Thailand. I was really into Duran Duran, the Smiths, Billy Idol, Tears For Fears and a Rick Springfield song called, “State Of The Heart” I had on 45 that Dan eventually smashed against a cinder block wall cause he got so sick of me mooning over some new wave beauty who was totally out of my league. We were good friends, me and that guy, he’d walk around his rich neighborhood at night, casually stroll inside someone’s open garage with all the yard machines and snowmobiles and power tools where they all had refrigerators where they liked to flaunt their surplus beer, and he’s open up the fridge and nick a couple 12 packs and bring them to my house cause my mom was never around. She’d been dating some errant Moody Blues fan since divorcing some sick monster and I was relieved she was absent. One less negative adult voice psycholgically fileting me like a fish for my inability to catch footballs or be “normal”. Teachers at school thought I was a pain in the ass cause some jackass richkid was always knocking me down and they got tired of filling out the incident reports, they mostly all felt like I was askin’ for it, right? One time some preppie’s dad caught Dan trying to steal something out of their family garage and beat him within an inch of his life, it was in the newspaper and after that, his stepfather doubled down on the push for him to join the marines. Jail or military, military or jail, that was like the only option being offered to anybody in that fuckedup tank plant town. All the rich parents seemed to work at the hospital or for General Dynamics and they really pressured the lower class males to be manly macho men, which I simply was not. I was like a Ramone, but they saw me as an unforgivably androgynous Edward Scissored Rocky Horror misfit, ya know? Sadly, once they manipulated, browbeat and coerced the once seemingly incorrigible and defiant Dan into joining the marines, Joey, Deke, and his younger brother Dustin all followed like dominoes. That was my whole gang, basically, besides me, the black quarterback of the white racist richid school, Wuzzy, and the fat funny John Candy guy, Tom. Shit never changes in this slave plantation except the marketing-they’ve gotten way better with the marketing. Now, I’m old, and there aint nowhere to go, I just try to take care of my own misfit teeanger nowadays who is running into friction with the sporty neurtypicals at his high school for wearing animal print and yesterday, he was rummaging through my cowboy hat collection out in the garage ya know? Everything changes, but nothing changes.They always try to push the working class kids into the machine. I remember some 80’s punk flick where all the bad teens wrote T.R. on their hands for “The Rejected”. I always identified with that cause you know, over the years, there were many flickering hours where it seemed like punk rock could actually be my way out. Most of the old amigoes though, had middle class dads, hospital vice presidents and real estate moms and eventually, they’d split for adult careers. I wrote a book about it, the garage bands I fronted.that died young and got nowhere in my teens and early thirties, and even had a pretty famous lady publisher saying she wanted to publish it. I hesiated for a couple years cause some of my friends committed suicide and shit and I didn’t wanna bum out the families with all the seemy lifestyle, back of the van, road dog, drug memories, and the lady found a different blue collar midwestern writer to promote instead. This old world’s full of renegade janitors and hard drinking punk droputs, I just can’t find none to work with in my part of the country. I always loved that old Mike n Axl song, “Dead, Jail, Or Rocknroll”, I think Little Steven had a hand in writing it, it really summed up the career opportunities available for us white trash weirdos from Nowhere, USA. Also, the Clash, and Godfathers. And Guns N Roses “Out To Get Me”. I loved them at 17 cause I lived that song, also, “Brown Stone”, “So Easy” and particularly, “Night Train”.
