Hello, my friends, up early, fed the cats, made coffee, now I peruse the bad news from overnight, like ya do, and prepare to face another thanklessly long and bleak work day. Shit-workers of the world unite! My teenager’s listening to Nirvana, which reminds me of when I used to work at a horrible college bar in the loathsome grunge years, and those Pearl Jam dorks in the midwest were having their first five minutes of Green Day booger punk “Alternative”-ness with all the Latest Fad Hopping and Popularity Seeking, and Official Copycat Narratives Of The day, dumb facial piercings and goatees and Doc Martins. I never vibed with all that shit, at all. The Offspring? Thought that shit was terrible, like Dr. Demento territory, almost. I met some Cocksure Blackhaired Hillbilly Romeo Charismatic Comedian Yeehaw Guitarplayer from Dukes Of Hazzard Kentucky and commenced to start another one of my long procession of certainly doomed, ramshackle, scarf wearing, no budget, drunknroll bands, we had a heavy metal drummer and a bratty grunge bassplayer-played bad bars in hick towns to confused midwesterners. I’d turned those guys on to Motorcycle Boy and the Joneses and while the snarly guitarist was no Ratboy or Jeff Drake, he looked good in vintage Western shirts and string ties I’d dress him up in, and had a rakish charm attempting to play Poison Ivy like rockabilly lines, badly. We spent time in the mirror applying our black eye makeup and trying to spruce ourselves up like the Stray Cats, even though we were bargain basement outlaw drunkards from a hellish nowhere, there mighta been some girls. That guitar player introduced me to one of my life’s best friends, a poet from the gutter street musician covered in tattoos, who had a bullfrog singing voice that was always supposed to join our band, but he’d light off for New Orleans just suddenly, or to help anarchists build treehouses in the jungle, or to walk racehorses or bodyguard hookers. I’d never believe his crazy stories about train hopping and meeting centerfolds and singing the blues with famous people at celebrity nightlife hubs in faroxx and exotic locales, but then he’d produce all these crazy Polaroids from his napsack, and some of it was true. He died. Nobody back there in football watching drivethrough fast food country had heard of any of our influences-so one local zeen compared us to the Melvins and another to the Cramps and GG Allin. I was listening to the Coma-Tones and Beasts of Bourbon, Gun Club, and Action Swingers mostly and just being myself, really. The guitarist wanted to Get Rich & Famous Overnight, like some collegetown trustfund hipster trendies we knew, who had all the good equipment and big amps and a recording studio paid for by their rich folks. He developed an Overnight Drug Problem to be more like Kurt, got himself a foxier but still sadly toxic version of Nancy Spungeon and she convinced him he should be the Lead Singer and he steadily attached himself to a drummer with Connections. They went out West and flirted with Bigtime Grunge Era Fame before he abruptly overdosed and croaked. I miss the guy sometimes esp. this time of the year, cause we had a lotta laughs together in his shitbox car that always brokedown in the snow, and him swaggering around with an open container of Jack Daniels while shopping for old L.A. Guns or Motley Crue t shirts and attracting attention with the clinking of spurs on his scarfed out cowboy boots, always being asked to leave all the junk shops across the river by old ladies, he’d charm ’em with his Elvis Presley shuck n jive and red leather pants, before passing out in the street and pissing himself. Me and the bratty grunge bassist would have to pull his limp body outta traffic. Last time I saw him, he’d shown up to see us open for a rising star namebrand punk band and was barely able to walk. He heckled us in his exaggerated Southern drawl and Van Halen shirt, stole some beer from the headliners, had a ruckous with their manager, and disappeared into the night. Never saw ‘im again. That’s kinda like what my whole life’s been like. Now I’m tired and distrustful, carrying around a skull filled with ghosts and decades old trauma while all the wealthier people keep trying to hand me the mop. Seen ’em come and seen ’em go. I smile when I remember that Westerberg and Stinson and Kris Kristofferson and the younger people’s Sanited Cobain were also all janitors at some point. I gotta go get ready for a busy day of tedious labor in the dirty cold. Capitalist hierarchy is a fuckedup sham, man. Think of all the times you heard that Chris Isaak song, “Wicked Game”. That guitar player, James Calvin Wilsey died penniless on the street. Ya know? Other people who just won some kinda wealth inheritance lottery all sashay around like buying stuff is art, and get to lord authority over us lower class peasants like they done something special to earn it, and have you ever met a rich person who didn’t claim they were self made with their special V.I.P. room genius and superior virtue and bootstraps innovations? Like Poison Idea sang, “I’m drunk and obnoxious, I hate the rich”. I hope everybody within the sound of my voice does something today to help make some noise on behalf of the criminally assassinated journalists, poets, medical community and poor familes of Palestine. Free Assange, prepare for a barter economy when the billionaire honchos take down the internet and blame it on some targeted population, they wanna outlaw cash, and Isreal exports their genocide weapons and A.I. surveillance tech to Cop City in Atlanta to train the fascist dystopian thugs here. Vive Le Revolution Friends, Long Live The Resistance. Was it Fred Hampton or Che Guevara who said, “you can kill a revolutionary, but you can’t kill the revolution?” I dunno, I never went to college, man, but the struggle continues.
