Man, another cool one has left our party. Gruesome times, my comrades, be good to each other. Del Lords appealed to me as a youngster cause they wrote songs as catchy as say, the Real Kids or Flamin’ Groovies, and kinda had that whole greasedup Thunderbirds/Fonzarelli street gang vibe which was how I saw my own ragtag misfit crew of leather jacketed ruffians and outcast metalheads growing up in the midwest before I was forced by abusive hick town bullies and crooked enabler grownups into quitting those fuckedup midwestern sports schools and running away to NYC. Always loved the Dics like crazy, too, they were fun as fuck. Yeah, I know summa those Dics were rightwingers, but man did they ever have some impeccable, unforgettable, joyously beautiful songs. “Stay with Me” and “Who Will Save Rocknroll” are two of the finest songs composed in the punknroll era! I always enjoyed them and salute Scott for his working class rocknroll heart. I never knew those dudes in real life, but as an entertainer, I always appreciated even Handsome Dick’s onstage frontman/blowhard wrassler persona and commanding ability as a frontman, way back before the horror stories started leaking out about how he had such contempt for poor people with any kinda drug problems, I kinda thought it was all just ya know, your old school Ric Flair style “heel” persona, then I got on Fascistbook and saw ‘im slagging people on government assistance even though he himself took plenty of handouts from his rich rocknroll friends to sell alcohol to yuppies.. Scott Kempner’s Del Lords made some real righteous blue collar barband stompin’ good times weekend rocknroll greatness back in the day and let’s never, never forget the undeniable greatness of Adny Shernoff’s timeless songwriting abilities and boy, could those guys play guitars! Ross The Boss is one of punk’s most underrated rock heroes! Would you believe a cuplla Dictators even played on recordings someone did covering MY seldom heard teenage originals? True story. A couple of those geezers got back together a few years back and man, oh man, let me tellya: they still got the stuff or heartfelt rocknroll majesty, just listen to their smash hit song, “Let’s Put the Band Back Together”! Hats off to Scott Kempner. Those guys were easily among the best who ever done it! You’ll probably never hear it but about five years ago, I wrote a song with the line in irt, “all I do is write obituaries” cause so many of my lifelong friends and heroes have all died suddenly in recent years. I used to be one of the resident gutter poets at a notoriously disreputable old hoodlum divebar when the Popes were playing at the college nightclub across the street in the grunge years. I tried to hustle tickets to the show from my oldest kid’s mom who worked there but alas, she needed the bartending tips and flipped the script insisting I babysit our son, so Shane ended up wandering across the street all bleary eyed and loud laughing after a big racuous perforemance sitting himself on my stool in between my two best friends at the time-two duelling Tom Waits frogvoiced hard boozing pirate characters-one with a leather hat and a leprechaun twinkle in the eye, the other was a New Orleans street musician with a Disco Sucks tattoo on the back of his head who has since died in the gutter, and when I arrived back at the bar the next day, I was gifted with a triple x large black concert t shirt that Shane wrote “Where were you? Love Shane” on. I wore it for years in spite of the fact I was but a wee slip of a wisp back then, and it looked like a dress on me. I lost all my stuff twenty five years ago, but his songs carried me through decades of strife and chaos and drinking and merriment.
One of those drunk bozos once asked me if I was ever gonna put him in any of my songs to which I responded, you guys are in all my songs. Duh. I always thought I’d see all that lot again, but alas, they’ve mostly all left the planet. Of all the crazy characters that made that bar infamous, only four of us are still alive-me, a hell raising stripper with a Trans Am turned nurse, a hillbilly sparrow voiced philosopher, and the errant leprechaun kaleidoscope maker who married my oldest kid’s mom. Love you, Shane. I’ll be needing some whiskey soon. Heaven is having a party tonight.
