When my oldest kid was very young, he saw “Thorn In My Pride” on MTV back when they played actual rocknroll and not just douchebag unreality lifestyle programming and thought that was me. Used to get on my nerves when people compared me to that singer just cause we were both thin and velvet clad, cause he’s a honky faux blues belter jamband pothead and I thought I was the punk as fuck too fast, scarf wearing dandy darling of the underground. In some ways I thought they were overrated, mainly cause they had big money access to background singers to go “do do do” and seesion men like the impossibly talented Chuck Leavell. Seems like they kinda ripped off Mother Love Bone’s epic masterpies, “Crown Of Thorns” for their “Remedy” song, which may have been the Crowe’s peak, really. I preferred the Crybabys, Dogs D’Amour, and London Quireboy’s personally, but the Brothers Robinson sure did have some swanky threads I envied back in the day, and some good songs. I also thought their bratty sibling rivalry Smothers Brothers dramas were stupid and they turned into the Grateful Dead after a flashing flicker of Faces like Lad Boogie. That “Angels” song played all night when I dated this gorgeous Egyptian Virgina Madsen lookalike from Newbury Street that I met at the Rat-me and my band ended up in some fisticuffs with her other suitor’s Ugly Kid Joe style whacky whiteboy funk band who were on a major label. She was a nice girl, though. Not her fault some dude felt some kinda misguided ownership of her, and came for me. I think Nasty F. Bastard settled that quickly. The Crowes “Southern Harmony” is getting the deluxe boxset treatment. I also kinda liked “Amorica”. Did they chase away all their own coolest bandmates with the star trip misbehaviors ala Axl Rose? Appears so. They had a real minute, though! I do find it rather charming that they started off playing R.E.M. covers down in Georgia. We were playing Deadboys and Alice covers in Shmoehio, so I could kinda relate.
