Whether it’s “Almost Famous”, or “High Fidelity”, people sometimes compare me to some record store snob who keeps trying to form bands even if his record store employer or geeky co workers don’t believe in him, or some other shows about heavy drinking writers, I always get kinda lumped in with anybody who believes in soul and sincerity and having fun and being wild, more than social climbing or joining the system or showing off my new truck or whatever, but I was not really modeling myself after any of those guys people compare me to, though obviously I do have an affinity for Hunter S. Thompson and James Baldwin and Charles Bukowski and Lester Bangs and Bill Hicks. When I read anything by those cats I feel like yeah okay I’m sorta distantly related to ’em. Peter Laughner, and John Cooper Clarke, too. And Jim Carroll. This world is fuckedup though-probably beyond repair and I can’t stand the cheerleaders of war and greed and mediocrity.
