Yeah so after a cookout when our old neighbors and neighborhood friends let my kid shootoff big fireworks until the cops came, something made me type in an old friend’s name online and sure enough, she’s been dead since 2005 and nobody told me. Me and that chick go way, way back, I first met her like in what shoulda been my sophomore year of high school I guess, when she was living with some poor foster family and her foster sister Susie was friends with all the gay boys in town and had pictures of Duran Duran all over the house and one of those cool welfare moms who let all the town’s rejects and weirdos hang out and one of those giant dogs so everything smelled like dog and cigarettes and was covered with dog hair and one of the local dragqueens was supposed to be driving me to get more beer but pulled over to the side of the road and tried to hit on me by singing a falsetto version of “Do Me Baby” by Prince-! I was real attracted to the moody, angry, gorgeous foster sis they’d taken in, who was into Guns N Roses early on, she always had some crazy big reaction to me cause she only knew me by my reputation as a wild boy whiskey heathen so I remember the time when she got a buncha wooden planks and nailed her bedroom door shut when I was coming to visit my old girlfriend who she was living with cause she was just so sure I was dying to read her poetry!!! We tripped on acid together, had a lot of laughs and exchanged childhood hardknocks stories, simmered with mutal attaction and we both loved Chris Isaak. I went to visit her one time when she was living with the nuns in Flag City, USA, she had been in some psych wards, had been abused as a kid, she also dated my boyhood bassplayer Bobby, who is also dead. Real smart cookie, one of those autodidactics who read alot even if she never went to college, she’d still be whip smart but she did eventually do the college thing, aced it no problemo, but remained troubled and was drawn magnetically back to her hellhole hometown where she became a hotel desk night manager last I was exchanging emails with her was when my ex was breaking up with me and moving two of my kids across the country without my permission but i had no rights, no way to fight as a poor person, she was always real supportive of me, that chick from my high school years. She had been a bad influence on an old girlfriend of mine so it took me awhile to really get to know and understand her and she ended up revealing some hard truths to me and we kinda became bonded just by mutual empathy, we were both from the sicko smalltowns of the midwest and had to fight all our lives for any meager scraps of autonomy or dignity. No cause of death was mentioned in the obituary. She was beautiful, there was an electricty between us and she said she felt very attracted to me but did not feel free to date me because of her friendship with my ex, it was alrite, we probably would have been unable to help each other anyway, but we remained good friends and confidantes for years on end, I always thought we’d catchup again somewhere down the line ya know? Have drinks, compare notes. But nope. (RIP) Leilane. I gotta take the kid to his doctor’s appointment today, weed the garden-I’m such a novice gardener that some weeds had been growing where I’d planted tomato seeds and I was excited and they were just weeds that kinda look like tomato plants, so that’s another comedic failure and I’ll have to go cut that shit down this morning.
