Man you know in the right mood, me and my main songwriting partner and longtime road companion, roommate and favorite drinking buddy can laugh about it, but mostly, for me, it’s been an ongoing lifelong shattering heartbreak that all our former cronies mutinied before we got to make any kinda sonic masterpiece to leave behind and show we were here, cause we were always like, “this close”, right on the verge, even our heroes all said we had the right stuff, we were right there, and everytime we approached any kinda real lightning in a bottle raucous, real rocknroller, all night reckless greatness, it crashed and burned due to lack of financing and a mercenary spirit so pervasive in this age. Many who saw our shows and knew our songs said we were “cursed” ’cause sometimes, there was no reason for anybody to burn us, we’d done ’em no wrong, helped ’em all become second hand celebrities and they’d all split suddenly…right there when we were two steps from the move and it was time to make it happen, captain. Or the chicks would split, or the drummer would get arrested. Or the guitar player would get arrested. Or the bassist would pay for some other dude to sing MY SONGS in the expensive studio instead of me, that kinda shit. Two former sidemn died. Two more part time wouldbe, sometimes collaborators followed. One guy just disappeared. The rich dudes ghosted us for offending their posh mom with our working class coarseness. She didn’t want her babies enabling these unkempt ruffians to record at their posh home studio that should be reserved for elite people only. Gentrifiers and indie-poser richkids pushed us out of the old ghetto neighborhood they remodeled as some kinda Strokes wannabe hipster hellhive. I’m maybe not as prolific as I once was ’cause I got a shit ton of responsibilities as a parent raising a high needs disabled teenager in this horrible era of lies and treachery and dishonorable backstabbings, but I still believe in all our old songs that just need to be recorded properly and I still have it, personally, I can still get up there and shake the room like Frankie Venom or Texacala Jones. One band that were as cursed as us Bastards were, was Badfinger and that might be why I always felt their songs so deeply, on such a personal level. Young people are discovering them because of “Breaking Bad”. My own kid plays “Baby Blue” like 1000 times a day. That break just slays me, and I had an old song we wrote in that dark and dirty basement where we kinda copied it. Ian Hunter was right when he said rocknroll’s a loser’s game.

If you know me in real life you probably know this Plimsouls songs makes me think of all the old daze and good times and laughs and love we used to share. I don’t think I ever wrote one song that good. I met Peter Case once but I was too drunk and going through some shit over a painfull breakup and fucked it all up, being shitfaced sloppy, trying to tell him how much I love him. The actors in “Valley Girl” all seemed like adults to me back then cause I was still an actual kid but they totally got the clothes right-that is what us weirdos wore before we had access to real big city punk boutiques, or red pleather pants. I kinda lived that whole story of trying to romance the soughtafter girl from the other side of the tracks. Getting repeatedly beatup by all the jealous jocks and preppies who thought they should own her because of her beauty, their moms helping launch campaigns against me, all that stuff is still imprinted upon my battered psyche.

Surly morning where I’m a bit bleery and disgruntled about the stench of catboxes-seems like all I do is feed these cats and clean their shit, not my thing, I’ve never been a cat person and now I got three of ’em somehow. Also a bit bitter about some dreaded friend of a friend bullshit social obligations I got wrangled into where I’m gonna have to paste on a fake as fuck smiley face and try to navigate some unholy interactions with some shifty, manipulative shyster like people I don’t really even like at all today and that shit is always so gruelling for me, I despise the fakeness and insincerity of modern society and it’s bullshit hierarchies and power trips and reindeer games. I try to stay away from those people. They are dangerous. It’s gross. Gets to be a real struggle to even keep some paling self illusion of sovereignty and self possession if you aint got your own kingdom to preside over, people always wanna leverage their stuff and push you around with all their bribes and extortion tactics to inflict their horrible “friends” upon you and most times, those folks from high up on the hill are just clockin’ what they imagine you got so they can try to find a way to steal it, liquidate it, monetize it and use it to fuel their vanity brand and next wave of unsold merchandise boxes in the spare bedroom. I try to mind my own business, social distance, not get involved with all the hucksters and the V.I.P.’s- it seems like nothing but greedy vampires and entitled rich kid plaigirist motherfuckers out there in the make a buck world. No thanks, I gave at the office, “bled all I can, I won’t bleed no more”. Management classers and inheritance spending landlord types are always looking for a soul to feed on. They are like motherfuckin’ mousquitoes. I’m depressed, I can’t stand those people.
Man, I’m just so grateful now for all the record store jobs I used to complain about growing up-hell, I even wrote a song once called “Record Store Depression”, it was always such a drag to trudge ten blocks through the snow to get on the redline and take the subway into Harvard Square to sell fucking stupid overrated Pearl Jam, Hole, and Crashtest Dummies cd’s to rich fucking Harvard kids for minimum wages, but management knew I drank on the clock and the corporate office founders had real lenient party policies from upstairs, so it was kinda begrudgingly tolerated so long as my cash count was not off by more than like three bucks. I did “shift a lot of units” for the profiteers. I did enjoy talking about old rocknroll all day with good people like my long suffering dandified Nick Cave lookalike indie/import buyer, Thom Jones who now runs a record shop in Portland and does a podcast called “HIPSTERS SUCK”. If you worked in Cambridge, you met people everyday from all over the world, so in that sense, it still had a bit of pre gentrification/super inflation, Agenda 21 melting pot bohemia goin’ on there with the highest per capita concentration of indie record stores in the world back then, and all night bookstores and coffee houses and shit where old hippies in expensive top hats played chess all night and circus performers rode mile high unicycles while juggling fire and shit like that. A folk singer named Ned Flathead Landlin sang in a bellowing, passionate voice in the echoing courtyard outside of the convenience store and captivated audiences who filled his hat to the top. Me and my scuzzy hooligan disreputable punkmetal lads did our raggedy Dogs D’Amour like reinterpretations of ancient Rolling Stones songs like “West Coast Under Assistant Promo Man” and “Spider & The Fly” and “Let’s Spend The Night Together” in “The Pit” where the punks hungout and we could sometimes buy a couple of big bottles of white port with the spare change from the discount cart of the liquor store Blanchards in Allston. It was always fun merrily traipsing around that city in our cowboy boots andspurs, fur coats and second hand fringey stripper threads singing on the subway and banging our tambourines. We even did a cover of “Little Pink Houses” that was a big crowd pleaser cause every other street busker in that town was only playing “Sugar Mountain” or “Wish You Were Here”. We were probably more entertaining garbed in all the clown white makeup, whack and tangle and crucifixes and Bolan feathers. Lately I been on a sentimental Big Star bender as so many people around me seem to be prematurely leaving the planet in rapid succession and everybody says they have no idea why. Friend of mine turned 63 today, someone I’ve known since I was 25 and shared a lotta mischiveous fun and all night kicks and chaos and heartache and tears with and unbridled guffaws, too. One of those friends who helped you through the hard times and made you laugh at the absurdity of it all. So yeah, kids, BIG STAR is one of those bands I discovered in my early twenties that still sometimes mesmerize me. Bobby Durango and Ringo Jukes used to tell me old Jim Dickinson stories. I wish I coulda recorded with my old band, the Bastards down there. Jim woulda understood us, he even produced the Replacements. We thought we’d found a producer one time but he just ripped us off and stole our songs. Ohhh, but aint that Amurkkka?
