Man ya know ever since the whole ridiculous grunge/alternative hoax when the media was consolidating into just four or five more manageable monopolies, with intentionally evil corporations buying up all the medium sized venues and college radio stations and mid sized music mags until nowadays it’s all just Rachel Maddow ranting about Trump, calling everyone a commie, and Kardashians and Foo Fighters, and only obnoxious say nothing rich kids can afford to have punque bands that ain’t even punk at all, we’re ledt with just mobs, hordes, and legions of suck shit mediocrity that never even knew what good music sounded like. One band that’s seemingly been forgotten by all these annoying hacks and awful trust fund bruncher babies is the Buzzcocks who fused upbeat, catchy, bubblegum sticky pop melodies with a long lost aggression and adolescent energy we seldom see from our so called contemporaries. I guess we can sometimes hear some faint echoes of their fizzy pop greatness in summa the formulaic Orange County professional punques and emos, but for me at least, none of them have any real trace of Buzzcocks sincerity, irresistible melody, thoughtfulness. Bands like the Buzzcocks, the Records, the Undertones, Only Ones, and the Boys are being forgotten in some circles, but never by us down here in the authentic grassroots way of life D.I.Y. underground. Only band I’ve heard in the past twenty five years or so that brought a similar gutsiness and pop sensibility was the also ignored 60 Ft Dolls, but you know what they say: real rocknroll never forgets. THE ICICLE WORKS STILL RESONATE THROUGH ALL THE DECADES
Icicle Works songs like “Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)”, “Hollow Horse”, “Nirvana”, “Understanding Jane” and “Love Is A Wonderful Color” were all so beautiful and exciting to my small circle of weirdo pop heads in a fuckedup tank plant town we grew up in! They were def. among our favorite bands along with the Cult, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Gene Loves Jezebel, Dream Academy, etc. I even remember liking some Howard Jones, Mister Mister, Tears For Fears and Thompson Twins back then when I was “Head Over Heels” for a certain local new wave girl. Ian McNabb had a unique voice and wrote exquisite pop hits that were so innovative and original sounding to me back then and the drummer was as good as the guys from the Cult and Big Country-he just drove those tunes with so much energy. Roy Korkill replaced bassist Chris Layhe in 1988, but I remember putting Icicle Works songs on so, so many mixtapes I would lovingly make for my bandmates I was trying to educate, uplidt, and convert to punk with varying levels of success, it was hard to keep a band together back there because summa the guys had like come from these tightknit sports families from deepest Catholic school sports bar talk radio Honkytopia, others just wanted to be popular and fit in. I always dreamed of finding a drummer like Chris Skarrock who also went on to play with Oais, Beady Eye, High Flying Birds, Lightning Seeds, World Party and the La’s. McNabb replaced him with Liverpool royalty Zak Starkey. I still love that band so much! I’m 53 and still trying to get a band together with that old punk and new wave and goth and cowpunk spirit. I wrote letters to all the original kids I knew back then last Christmastime and only one or two wrote me back even begrudgingly. I think they consider me crazy cause I still remain outside of society, I still love all the old new wave music, I still dress the same, still anti war and anti fascist and anti corporate and pro free speech, indie media, grow your own food, get down hootennanny around the bonfire, etc. I’m the last of the last of the last of the last. How much more, babies, can you ask?

How many Americans are naive enough to believe our Gov’t cares about Ukraine? Our Gov’t knew they could easily erase and then change what was happening in Ukraine before 2/24/2022, because our citizens have no idea what is happening around the world and would fall for whatever movie script they write for us. There is no amount of propaganda, coups, invasions, lies, proxy wars and how many Americans they can keep convinced that our Gov’t is the “Good Guys”

Another great band from my “Trouser Press”, “Smash Hits” and “Creem Magazine” obsessed, misfit, post-punk and new wave weirdo teenage years that I can still draw strength and inspiration from listening to is the Northern Ireland Small Faces pop institution THE UNDERTONES! Feargal Sharkey has one of the most distinctive voices in the rock canon but so perfectly suited to their quirky kinda Beatlesque punk rock. A friend of mine was expressing self consciousness about his unconventional singing voice and after decades of unreality show, music as sport tv programming, I had to explain to him that many of our favorite singers from Forgerty to Strummer had unconventional singing voices we all just became accustomed to. Patti Smith, Paul Westerberg, Shane MacGowan, Tom Waits, Tom Petty all had weird voices, like most everybody I love.
