One of the first generation punk bands I love most is Canada’s THE VILETONES cause they were real punks, outraged by the system, dropping out and doing their own thing, defying the mainstream bullshit and creating their own fantastic subculture, “outside of society”. People who call themslves punques nowadays are just compliant greedhead trendhoppers hoping to be patted on the head by the Politeness Committee for never offending any middleclass people, ya know what I mean? Punk was supposed to be all about resisting the authoritarian power structures, not kissing ass and sucking up and marrying some rich person-Murkkkans modernday idea of punque involves like, urging people to vote for Hillary Clinton, that kinda shit. Pro war punques, sensitive safespace Steven Universe FEELINGS punques. Therapy punques, furry animal cosplay punques. Not my thing, man. Take me back to the underground when bands had good songs, defied the rules and fought the fascists. So yeah I still need real punkroll here in my fifties. The VILETONES not only had it, but Steven Leckie is still like the living personification and heroic, fearless, dapper, dandified rebel bohemian immortal. Not only is a he a thoroughly righteous and inspirational character, but man oh man, all his music was so invested with real legit soulpower, anger, intelligence-he was making you think and I know some people hate that, but for me he was making me FEEL, alive and willing to take risks, adventure onward, try new things, explore the world. Why can’t we have bands like the Viletones now? Lack of money or lack of courage? What are we waiting for? I was listening to my colleague John Dissed yesterday thinking to myself, he should be as big as Green Day, he’s got all that talent and power pop hooks with political content and Roger Waters brains, but he says he struggles to even get his stuff heard which I find shocking cause supposedly everybody’s a punque nowadays, but maybe we all just get the music we deserve and most Murkkkans are so dumbed down now all they can understand is booger rawk. I feel really lucky to have grown up in a time when bands still existed who made records with a real point of view that communicated actual human emotions with guts and integrity rather than all these gratuitous brandbuilder groveling selfie hipsters crawling upward begging to be rich, I hate that garbage. So yeah whenever there is a cold snap, I think about all my brothers and sisters out on the streets shivering in the alleys. One woman we knew died on the steps of the White Bird community outreach offices while waiting for them to open one morning, another woman was ran over by a garbage truck while sleeping outside the church where they passed out the free burrittoes. Both of those incidents happened within a month or two of the big yuppie pinkhat women’s march for Hillary. That was in a particularly cruel town I passed through on my travels, searching for a heart in this country, Eugene Oregon, which used to be a real hippie town, I mean, all the fanzines used to talk about Eugene anarchists, Merry Pranksters, Counrtry Fair acidheads, and Eugene intentional community communes back in the day, until billioniare Phil Knight and some other hotel owner scumbags remade it in their image, Bill Gates style, now, it is a rebranded rightwing identity politricks bourgeoise “sports tourist” town and they spend tens of thousands to put sharp rocks under the underpasses so people can’t get dry in the cold elements and die faster. They lock all the public restrooms and tell the middle class people somebody shit in their plaza. It’s really ugly, that’s why I think the people really are Twilight Zone brainwashed-they just don’t wanna ever see poor people in their Honkytopian rich people playground paradise. It triggers them, they are “offended”, and then, ya know even the ones whose friends drag them to help out at Food Not Bombs in the park still wanna lecture the houseless lesser thans about college privilege theory and how the politely posh pronouning college people are really the ones being oppressed by these unsightly panhandlers and coarse, uncultivated veterans living in storage spaces, or in tents down by the river. it’s really fucking gross. I’ve said elsewhere that when I was a sleazy punk brat writing all those songs about hard drinkin’ in smalltowns while wearing too many scarves in tribute to Tyler and David Jo and Tyla and Rod, we discovered “Guitar Town” in the cutout bin at Magnolia Thunderpussy or Singing Dog and I had this fantasy for years of someday “gettin’ discovered” by Steve, cause I always knew we had a lot in common. Unsurprisingly, he had a kid of his own, Justin Townes Earle, that was every bit as talented in his own right as Jacob Dylan or Jeff Buckley, so I feel for Steve so deeply that he lost his beautiful son, I can’t hardly even grasp it. I’m just so sorry for him. I never met Guy Clarke OR Steve Earle, but my fallen amigo Paul K probably knew ’em all, he certainly knew David Olney and Townes Van Zandt. Paul K’s who got me into Guy Clarke, he knew that Kris Kristofferson and John Prine were two of my fave songwriters and he told me Guy was like them and he was not wrong. I had a longtime songwriting partner who kinda had to hang up his spurs because of health problems, we were a good duo-he played badly and I sang badly and together we were the alleycats, then I found out one of my old bassplayers is sick, then another of my old bassplayers died, three of our other sometimes sidemen a hillbilly rogue in red leather pants, a crusty punk who became a tattooist, and a train ridin’ outlaw anarchist with disco sucks tattooed to the back of his head also died, so all these themes explored in these songs like heartache and divorce and guilt and booze and seein’ all your desperado elders all leavin’ this world one by one are things I’m already kinda thinkin’ about. I picked smoking back up under some maximum personal high anxiety stress and I know it’s stupid and I gotta quit again cause I got a teenager with a disability who’s gonna need me to stick around and be alive and help take care of him, my grandmother died of COPD issues caused by lifetimes of smokin’, ya know we’re Kentuckians, so even my baptist reform school allowed underage cigarette smoking, just no kissing or hand holding or secular music or heavy metal magazines. My kindred spirit and fellow traveler the Reverend Paul S. Cunningham turned me on to this here album and it is a beautiful tribute to one of our best drinkers, I mean, songwriters. I naturally love all those guys. I got some songs I been slow fermenting for over twenty years, Prine said he wrote “Souvenirs” on the fly. Kills me. It don’t come easy these days, songwritin’…tryin’ to say all the old things in some new way. Especially when all these guys all already said it all better than I ever have or maybe ever will.
