It still amazes me what a wild frontman with a point of view can accomplish if he is accompanied by dedicated, competent musicians. Killing Joke made the most epic, nihilistic, Armageddon dancemetal, with that crazy ominous, driving, thumping drums/bass extraordinaire and all manner of crazy world beat influences from Public Image Ltd to Wire and disco and Fela probably. I had all their cassettes and postcards and t shirts when I was young before they started getting confiscated by various ex girlfriends or left behind in emergency moves. One of the all-time best eighties bands and the one that made all us punk and goth kids get up and dance as often as old Ministry or the Cult did. I doubt I have the same political agenda or religious beliefs as those guys in Killing Joke, but I sure do like their music and I don’t have to cancel or boycott every band that has a different idea than me. Funny, that, huh??! If you haven’t seen the Killing Joke documentary it is a powerful piece of film. Prior to that I always figured me n Jaz were fightin’ for the same team, but I’m not as positive after seeing that. I love Sisters Of Mercy approximately as much as I love Killing Joke but I was reading an article where Andrew was talking about how much he just loved Obama and I was just shaking my head sadly. Let that be a cautionary tale about what happens when you get too much celebrity, fame, comfort, power. One day you get a big budget for a name producer and a fancy sci fi video and the next you’re praising dudes who brag about expanding dick Cheney’s wars and “torturing folks” and droning teenagers. So I looked in on my old Kentucky hometown newspaper yesterday and another one of my neighbors who went to school with my aunt and knew the Talking Heads and played Daniel Boone in a big play has died, AND my grandfather’s barber who owned the main old fashioned downtown barber shop AND another one of his brothers, my great uncle, which just leaves three remaining siblings from my grandfather’s family of 18 kids, About a week ago I found out a famous activist, college professor, and black art dealer I was close to at one time also passed, it’s unrelenting, aint it? Something about all the deaths sorta unnerves or even frightens me on some days. We were at a vacant apartment owned by our landlord where we do laundry and noticed that someone had climbed over the big wooden fence and got through a kitchen window and had been squatting there-seemed to be a meth couple, they left girl’s clothes there, including an expensive wool coat and what appeared to be a bloody knife on the floor was thankfully only some kinda peanut butter and jelly probably. I sure was not gonna touch it. On one hand, it’s a bit troubling that vagarants have found a point of entry into the property where my wife has gone by herself so many times, but when the developers keep buying working class homes and changing them into McMansions or Airbandb’s and all the shitlib gentrifiers charge impossible rents, human beings exiled out into the cold and it’s been freezing here are gonna have to take some drastic measures to seek shelter for the night. They kinda ransacked the place like went through all the drawers and shit and I think they found some old food in fridge-the peanut butter and jelly leftover from God knows when, but I was watching a documentary about gentrification ripoff rents and soldout city hall shitlib excuses makers in Olympia, Washington called, “The River” (you should see it!) and remembering all the people I used to think I liked until they started spewing all their class bigoted hate speech about the homeless community and how grateful I am that most of them NIMBY fuckers are gone from my life now. I do not have much sympathy for fucking landlord motherfuckers charging “market value rent” or rich people waiting for their even richer relatives to die so they can by more sky high ripoff rental properties with their inheritance and tell you what innovative and virtuous and morally superior bootstrapping hardworkers they are. Self actualized, self made, they always say. Earth goddesses, whatever the fuck that’s supposed to mean. I call them human rights abusers. They are all such greedheads and unremorseful, shameless, cop suckin’ pigs for war. Back in my hometown they kicked out the Christians who ran a homeless shelter cause they are doing the whole Fifteen Minute City Agenda 21 Gates reset incremental depopulated cashless society dystopia bullshit-purging the poor from downtown, so only rich old widows and a gay mayor and some Masons can just dominate that three mile radius where all the historical buildings and statues are. All my cousins are like insurance salesmen and car dealers and cattlemen. They all inherited big rolling farms and shit. Most of the time, I don’t mind being poor cause I see how money turns even ex punks and former hippies into these greedy megalomaniac beasts who expect people to kiss their asses or else. I would never wanna become that, even if I was able to buy that NME New Romantics A-Z magazine or some Charlie Sexton t shirt I want so badly online. Look at Guns N Roses-they started off as white trash punks, just like me and my friends and look what money did to those guys almost overnight. Now they got a $100 t shirt business and you can pay to shake hands with their employees. They can’t write songs, though. Would you rather be able to write good songs…or have a big egotrip and power to throw around on overcharging people, and playing screechy awful covers in sports stadiums for any events rubes who like being herded around like cows? I can’t write good songs anymore, either. I wish I could, I think it has something to do with never being able to properly record the old stuff that WAS good. A punk kid band in the midwest covered one of my songs when an ex bassplayer pissed away his inheritance in like four months-they really did a great job of it, it was a white hot cover version, even if the singer added a dumb lyric, it rocked like Rose Tattoo. I wish I had a copy of it. I always liked the guys in that band. I put some tarps and dropcloths over the garden last night and so far my sproutlings seem to still be alive but it is supposed to get even colder tonight.
