I feel so bad that all the people I used to know just slavishly tuned into MSNBC or CNN and believe it. I love that John Waters quote about how if you go home with somebody and they aint got no books, don’t fuck ’em, but I gotta tell ya, an amazingly beautiful to behold female took me back to her place one time, and she has a great image, tattoos, cornrows, pink leather, hootchie kootchie eyes, the whole deal, right? Reminded me of Lisa Bonet who I have always been absolutely gaga for, and I was checkin’ out her bookshelves-Sylvia Plath, Henry Miller, Noam Chomsky, Charles Bukowski, Anais Nin, it was not until four or five years later, that I realized, all those books actually belonged to the guy she was ditching for me. She was just bourgeois bored and collected people-she wanted to conquer and possess one of every flavor. She got bored and discarded me, too, just as breezily. I used to know H Bomb Ferguson a little bit, and we used to drink together on a semi regular basis, but I never met Screamin Jay. Screamin Jay’s one of those people who still have the magic power to pick me up on a cold gray gloomy Sunday and help me remember I’m still alive for now and as my pal DJ PHILLY PHIL reminds me, it is important to live the way the dead would want us to! I tried to get ahold of my former roommate the country star, but he could not be bothered to write me back- when you are an antisocial, power to the people, fuck the war, 4 real though, perpetually sexy glamarchist, you get alot of that, especially, as we get older. So I met this girl while waiting in line to see Circus of Power once cause she was wearing a Michael Monroe Blondes Have More Fun t shirt-we became fast friends and longtime pen pals and I still have some letters and tapes she made me. I happened upon her again later and she had pink hair and was insanely beautiful, I mean, songs have been written about her dumbfounding beauty, now she came from a problematic family and mighta had some issues, but she was always real super cool to me. When I moved to L.A. and got involved with a moody and mercurial fortified wine guzzler, I’d end up seeking sanctuary at her place when times were hard. She introduced me to one of my childhood punk heroes she was dating and Man I loved him, too, we had so many laughs together, rolling through the streets like footlose and fancy free, yo ho ho pirate motherfuckers, he knew everything and everybody and was unbelievably kind to me when I was a scrawny derelict son of a bitch from the worst place on Earth. I know I’m repeating myself-all my kids tell me I do that shit alot now, in my elderly goth years…but I was watching that cool interview that glitter queen Mikayla Beyer did with JEFF DRAKE THE KING OF THE COWBOYS, and ya know, that naturally got me thinking about how much I miss my old pals Billy, Scott,and the mighty, mighty, motherfuckin’ Humpers, ya know? That’s pretty much all I was listening to, while all my so called former peers were all going on about rap metal or Alice In Chains or Kid Rock, or Hootie & the Blowfish, or whatever. Man oh man, me and the lost lads used to play so many fuckedup, absolutely nowhere, fucking ridiculously shite shows with unpracticed fill in drummers, where the only people who came to see us were the rich kids in the Salvation Army tuxedo jackets and white belts, who stood in the front row with their arms crossed, to always Let Us Know we weren’t part of their hometeam V.I.P. in crowd, like we ever needed a reminder, and some shitfaced drunken former bandmate stumbling around heckling us mercilessly and helping himself to the headliner’s beer stash, that I became gradually less and less enthusiastic about showing up for unrehearsed cattle call tribute night shows in other towns which was a Big Deal to some of my former bandmate’s associates. The high point of my long dead musical career was undoubtedly, just opening up for these real rocknroll motherfuckers from Long Beach, California, in some crap bar, or punk rock pizza place or something, so long ago, I can barely remember, and traveling with the headliners and summa my former Boston ghetto punk amigoes to Chicago the next night while somehow, mysteriously, my crappy car, parked back in the overpriced, college townhouse apartments parking lot, where I lived for at least another week after that, caught fire just for no reason at all. I gotta say, I wish Epitaph would have done a better job of promoting those guys, cause they successfully sold all the weaker bands on their roster to all those hot rods and eightball tattoo people, because to this day, whenever somebody wants to start hounding me to get behind this week’s latest gentrification fauxpunk band, i just think to myself, that aint punk rock. The Suicide Kings, Lovesores, Guerilla Teens, Vice Principals, of course, anything associated with the Brothers Drake is always awesome. REUNITE THE HUMPERS!

All the loudly rampaging college kids were on their way to the college football game, not the protest. That’s the difference between me and my fellow Murkkkans, right there in one illustration. Football or peace? They will always choose football. My kid is listening to some old archaic gospel song my grandmother would appreciate, it’s seven in the morning, cold day, up with the roosters, it’s finally light outside. Can’t believe how effective the empire’s become at mass hypnotizing everybody I used to know. All the wise old geezers have croaked, all the up for it rebel armies are long gone or in deep retirement. The tv watchers and pencil pushers are way, way more worried about blaming Trump some more, or cancelling some supposedly offensive, transphobic black standup, then they ever will be about preventing wars, holding lyin’ ass, promise breaking, model politicians accountable, or stopping the sociopathic billionaires from fucking up the environment or poisoning entire communities for their own private, insatiably reckless gain. I read the wingnut websites because they are the only ones covering the World Economic Forum, but only to slag them off as radical left socialists, and complain about immigration. I read the nitpicking shitlib fake progressive sites and all they care about is still bitching about a maga protest from four years ago, or people who refuse to believe cotton cloth masks prevent transmission of the plague. No mention of the insane price gouging or death, death, death, with a hot side of more death. All the Midwesterners repeat the tv message to me about how the air in Palestine is safe and effective, in spite of all the dead birds and people with rashes all over their bodies complaining of dizziness and nausea. Biden seaz he’d love to help, but he’s gotta give all the emergency relief to Zelensky and Bourla, rather than the sickly citizens of Palestine. SOMETHING TOLD ME
I needed to call my childhood brother, former best friend and original guitar player yesterday. I rarely hassle the dude anymore cause he has a big job and two kids he does not get to see enough, because he is always so busy, but I called the brother and found out his mom had died nine days ago. I got to speak to her two times over Christmas, she had always been a mother figure to me. We were wild little heathen rascals growing up, and even after he got serious and went to college, she continued to nurture and protect me whenever I had problems all the way into my thirties, I’d still go visit her, or stay with her sometimes when I was going through breakups with girlfriends or whatever. I even went with her and all her kids on family trips in the summers, she would help finance our little kid bands by working as a secretary and running a sewing business out of her house, hand creating prom dresses and stuff for people, lovingly made memory bears made of people’s clothing and now she has passed, a part of me has gone with her, ya know wht I mean? Like she was my home base for so long, and she helped raise some of her grandkids, she just provided so much care and stability and hospitality and loving warmth to all of us. Even though she was peasant poor, she always mananged to lay out a big spread at the dinnertable, even burnt candles and said a prayer. She used to call me her prodigal son. It’s a real drag, a big loss. Makes me wanna quit cigarette smoking again. It’s been a real stressful winter here, with all the death and loss and worry and memories. I’ll probably talk to her other kids at some point, we all live in different states, now. I’m ever so glad they all gathered around her last Christmas, she loved them so much. I can tell you that old cliche is true, that old people used to tell us, you’ll never know what it’s like-parenting, until you have kids of your own. My friends who never have kids never learned how to put somebody else or grater cause first, it’s all still just aboyut that next fix or acquisition. I think about my grandparents all the time. All the work and worry we put them through, now, I also have grown kids who I fret about and long for and always wanna help and protect, and that Soul Asylum song we used to like in our early 20’s that went, “grandfather watched the grandfather clcok and the phone hasn’t rang for so long”, has ceased reminding me of how I should call my own grandparents who raised me and died, it’s bizarrely taken on layers of new meaning, as I’ve become the old man forever waiting to hear from long lost absent children who are out there in the world doing their own things. Life’s a weird trip for me, man. If it wasn’t so cold out there, I’d probably commence dredging through my storage tubs looking for pictures of my man’s mom to send to him and his siblings, maybe later today, if it wams up some. Me and that kid had a real cool rocknroll chemistry together when we were young, we were sortof opposites in some ways but really complimented ach other onstage, a bit like Roth and Van Halen, I’m still askin’ myself all the time, “Where Have All The Good Times Gone?” A dear friend suggested I pen my memoirs cause I had a crazy life but I already did that years ago-just never published the shit cause it felt too soon. As I age, I find myself wanting to protect ’em all-the wild, the innocents, the Elizabeth Street Shufflers. I got a pic of our old homies Keith B and Dave A sitting on a bench in the woods somewhere with my long lost leather jacket, watching us glam brats play some old hippies shindig in the woods. I miss all those guys, most of ’em are dead and gone now. I’m still Desperately Seeking Susan-ya know what I mean? The Loneliness Maximum Torch & Twang rebel jug band seeks guitar, bass, n drums.
