ORIENTAL BEAT BEING RE-RELEASED
I can not believe it’s been forty fucking years. I guess I was about 13. We did not unearth this particular title for a few more years after that-I was probably sixteen by the time me and my dear homie, Dave, finally shook out a copy of this fucking heroic marvel of a life changing masterpiece. I don’t talk to Dave much anymore, so I dunno if he still listens to it, but I know I do. Back then, he wanted to be like Andy McCoy, he had the hat, the frilly shirt, the makeup, he painted, played guitar just like a ringin’ the bell, the whole bit I remember when he painted those Japanese anime Hanoi Cartoons on his ripped up jeans. I still got summa the pictures to prove it but the vast majority of the most important pics from that era were hoisted by family members back when I was being evicted, so like photos of me and Andy McCoy on the “Instinct” tour, all our pix from the goth bar where we hungout in Indiana, pics I took with Jerry Nolan and Mike on his way out the door with my rolledup fanzine in his hand at the Thunders tribute show, all that is hopefully in the custody of one of my ex wives, and maybe I’ll get to see some of those old photo again someday. Probably not though, it feels like I’m runnin’ outta time now! We took a bunch of photos on Mike’s bus in Detroit when he put his sparkly top hat on me! Even my leather jacket that all those guys signed got stolen while we applied for army/navy surplus store jobs way back in Cambridge, Massachusetts! Our friend Ron Essex, who joined the army and later became a professional photographer, he painted a big portrait of Mike on our ’73 Oldsmobile. We used to drive that car to see like Iggy or Faster Pussycat or Circus Of Power or L.A. Guns whenever we got enough gas money and it frequently brokedown. Anyways, as crazy punk smalltown glam kids, we were totally en thralled by this record! My favorite is still, “Back To Mystery City” which alongside Generation X “Into The Valley Of The Dolls” has been like, tied as my Alltime Favorite Record for most of my life, but songs like, “Sweethome Suburbia”, “Teenangels Outsiders”, and “Motorvatin” are what first motivated Dave n Deke n me to start the perpetual search for a drummer, I remember Chris M., the school psychiatrist’s son saying he was gonna get some drums for Christmas but I think his folks frowned upon the idea of his making music with us disreputable hooligans. Dustin and Dan’s (RIP) parents, our other sometimes bandmates, forbade them from coming to rehearsals-they’d have to sneak over to practice those early metal covers like “Smoke On The Water” with us in my mom’s townhouse basement. A guy named The Ratt was our first bassplayer but he was Deke’s Beavis & Butthead sidekick, and when Deke was fed into the military by the adults in that dreadfully oppressive and brutal tankplant town, The Ratt also disappeared. We called him that cause he wore a satin tour jacket from Spencer Gifts in the mall that had the Ratt logo on the back. We hungout on the dirtbike trails behind the drive in and sometimes at the arcade in the mall. I remember our first imaginary album was supposed to be titled “PIPE DREAMS”…by HARLOT! “Fallen Star” took on more and more meaning over the years, as so many of our dearest friends died. First was Beefy, then Dan, then Mitch, Kevin Little, and on and on. Hanoi Rocks made me start writing songs really, them and like I said, Generation X. Those are the primary bands that inspired me and my gang. I suppose also the Clash and Flesh For Lulu and Lords Of The New Church/Deadboys. When I play those old records, I feel young and bold and ready to take on the world. We even covered summa those songs at our early shows once we started finding suitable drummers. I think we did “Devil Woman”, “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams”, “Tragedy” and some others. I could not sing as good as Mike and as Ian Hunter sez, “I was not half as pretty”, but I had that feeling deep down in my soul, I had that same calling, that same instinct to grab the microphone stand, and yell my heart out, tear it up for the kids. We were wild, wild boys for many, many years. Some of those guys went straight and some of their replacements overdosed and died and shit. I could not afford to pay those big city rents with my part time dishwasher and record store wages, so eventually, I had to leave and relocated to the farthest reaches of the deadend desert. Some parts of this town look like Tattooine, Luke Skywalker’s planet, which makes a lotta sense in a way, cause I sure do feel like one of the last of my kind, out here. I still live by the old codes, abide by the old ways. I got a dance pressed in my stance now. I had a bombshell girlfriend I never got over back then and all those songs from “Don’t Follow Me” to “Ice Cream Summer” always made me think of her. I used to make her a million cassettes with all those songs on ’em mixed in with like new wave like Jesus & Mary Chain and Psychedelic Furs and the Cure and Love And Rockets. I always thought I was gonna make it big in rocknroll and win her back again! As the years zoomed by, all our ex friends would kinda chastize me, because I never grew up, ya know? Everybody’s mom kept calling me Peter Pan, so I wrote a real heartfelt song about that called, “Where Is Wendy”, now it was a rushed job in the recording studio when I tried to get it to tape properly, we were an under-rehearsed lineup and tried to cram too many songs into an 8 hour day, so I was real unhappy with the vocal, it was too long and needed a little more sweetening, but if I ever get the chance, I was re-do it, get it down on tape the way I hear it in my head and in my heart, cause I still think of it as one of the real good ones, just not the rushjob version. So I can identify with Andy and Mike always wanting to fix their album that they felt the engineer was trying to make sound like Spandeau Ballet. I still love Hanoi to tears. Hanoi Rocks, Forever!

I think if you’re gonna repeat what somebody else said about Chappelle, you owe it to yourself to, at least, watch his special, and find out why he’s really being shouted down.
