I think I shot ’em an email tellin’ em to send me promo sawg for review back when I had a big column in the national Barnes & Noble punk mag, they never did, but of all the bands that were still around doing it right when I went into my first retirement to care for my three older children, they seemed the most like me and my ramshackle set to self destruct before we even got our fifteen minutes flash punk booze bands, had we not always fucked up and broke up right when we were two steps from the move. They kinda had it all, did everything right. I salute them! My kinda punk band! They were exactly like me and my old muckers but my lot all managed to either kill themselves or vanished into some kinda big city gentrification scene that was never gonna be my bag. All that rich people hipster shit still feels too much like middle school to me. The good part of being in the no man’s land deadend graveyard town desert is I don’t have to fuck with gentrification brunchers or pink haired Secretaries very much anymore, but the down side is no punks, no record stores, no wild music. Just a lotta sad old people waiting to die, and a scary school to prison pipeline slippery slope for the kids who got nothing to do. We lived that shit as 80’s kids, but we formed bands, wrote songs, promoted our own little desperate livin’ basement rock shows, made our own clothes and shit. Made our own tv shows. Those were different times. Ten bands. $5 at the door. Keg of beer in the corner but punk rock Adam sat right beside it on a milk crate, had an I.V. Punk rock had gotten real lowbrow in the Nashville Pussy/New Bomb Turks/Supersuckers/Candy Snatchers era, ya know I’m not sayin’ those were lousy bands, at least not all of ’em, but all their midwestern fanboy copycat clone imitators were-all the little suburban punk bands were copying like Zeke or whoever, and the lyrics were all becoming some shit to do with their tattoos, sideburns, pussy and hot rods, ya know? Moral Crux weren’t great cause their singer had spraypainted slogan Clash clothes or Billy Idol hair, anybody can do that, most of us have, but the music was good, they could write songs and they were saying shit that was important, that mattered, they had messages in their tunes and I thank them for that. Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujuh” documentary was really good. Used to take him up to seven years to write a song. I love him the best. KD Lang kills it at the end. I mean slays it-better than wainwright or Buckley. I used to have that beautiful book with all of his lyrics but I gave it to my former divebar co host the legendary jester, comedian and kaleidescope maker Dan way way way back in the day when he used to live with my fallen street poet bluesman train hopper motorcycle anarchist brother. I wrote many songs about those guys. One’s dead and one kinda joined the in crowd. I drink a great big whiskey to ’em anyway. I was watching some Dave Chappelle special and he was talkin about how you better learn to play basketball, sell crack or dance for the white people cause those are the only ways out and I laughed out loud because way back in my twenties I had already come to terms with the poverty and knew my only way out of the ghetto was writing real good songs and convening a real good rocknroll band. Harder than it looks. It was so important to me and I just failed and failed. The crazy part is I still think I can do it. Even now when my friends are gone and my hair is gray, ya know the very motherfuckers I used to sing “Tower Of Song” alongside, Mark and Andy 2, Adam, and Unconscious, they’re all dead now. Even the die hardest motherfuckers I ever knew rolled up the flags and assimilated, sold all the guitars a long time ago, but I’m still here, “STILL CRAZY”, like the movie, I still think I can do it. Leonard was doing it until the very end. He aint like thesse sleepwalkin’ little automoton, punk by numbers, jiveass fakes we got now, he always bet big, risked all, revealed himself, stayed young in that way.

You know I always loved Soft Cell and really took a lot from Marc Almond in the way of how I dressed and applied makeup and cut my hair as a teenager. Him and Stiv Bators, right? He is still such a wonderful enetertainer who, like Boy George, has just gotten better at singing and commanding a stage and nowadays he plays with Neal X, one of my favorite guitar players from the fabulous Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Sputnik were crassly commercial moneygrubbing image peddlers way before all the professionally styled mainstream product haircuts and wardobes we got now, and Marc Almond was a gay satanist way before you were. They are probably one of the best remaining showbiz superstars in my disappointed worldview. One of the last few stars who really glisten. I’m gonna go search youtube now to look for a video of Almond singing Peggy Lee’s “Is that All There Is?” It’s really hard to even fathom how great of a talent Marc Almond is…and then, you add Neal X! LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT
Like I said, I kinda got burned in my twenties by the whole Alternative/Grunge frathouse scene so I kinda dropped outta music for a long, long time and stayed busy working shit jobs and raising babies and caring for various family members so I lost track of most all the bands that seemed somewhat promising back when I still participated in fanzine culture and received stuff to review in the mail all the time. One band I remember thinking was pretty cool when they were just getting started was LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. I thought they had some good ideas, were vaguely Leftish which I like, and did a real theatrical stage show kinda reminiscent of goth bands from my era like ya know Rozz and Kommunity FK, Bauhaus and Skinny Puppy. I’m an old school goth in that I was never really into Nine Inch Nails, Orgy, or Marilyn Manson and I can’t stand the Hot Topic people who came after them and hijacked that whole tradition and image for elitist exploitation and greedhead commercialism, like Lady Gaga, I can’t stand that shit, Murderdolls came along and kinda took the whole look we had in my doomed glitter gang Murder Stars and they were followed by Black Veil Brides and all those bands just had so much money, how could you even hope to compete with them? After them Spooky Kids cracked the mainstream, the powers that be were superfunding like one million Marilyn Manson Junior bands, I could not even keep track of them, it wasjust like when all the fake Guns N Roses bands were gettin’ signed as soon as “Sweet Child” got played. LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, though, they were pretty good, had a zillion people pass through their lineup and ya know, I know how that is. I could not even name ’em all. London After Midnight’s primary ghoul Sean Brennan seemed real talented to me and I appreciated that he was more cerebral than many of his contemporaries in the spitting blood steampunk, horror punk, corny cliche’d modern world. I think I first heard about them in a cool old glam and goth zine called “Machine Gun Etiquette” in the early nineties when I lived in Boston.

It never mattered who did what first, it’s who did it with the money machine behind ’em that the capitalist culture will call successful innovators, so I think that has a lot to do with why so many of my former bandmates kept relentlessly dropping out and turning in their black leather for some khaki pants or whatever. We had a whole procession of white trash punk and metal bands with goth and cowpunk and derelict country and new wave influences, but there were too many people with access to big flash studios and money, who had like industry backers and people who knew about copyrights and licensing and touring and merchandise, in their corner. When I see the big money artifical glam bands, man, I can’t help but have these severe pangs of loss and regret cause we were doing that whole act back in what ’86 or 87? We shoulda stuck with it but there was a mutiny. I can see so many my former, once youthful collaborators in the look and energy of these bands, but they all split when times got hard, and one of my old drummers even sadly became a fucking cop. I kinda despair over some of them. I see ’em on the social medias promoting wars, fascism, and official ruling class narratives and it really gets me down.
DANCING ON THE VALENTINE
My old lady made me a mosaic valentine based on one of my favorite songs by Chris Isaak-“Two Hearts”. It’s a real wonderful piece of art and deeply felt by the recipient, cause man, oh man, we’ve been through the war together! I had crazy dreams last night about a bear in the yard-we get cows out there at night alot, but the bear was scarier, then, there was an old DJ friend working at a Tiki joint in a stripmall clad in a Hawaiian shirt and covered in butterfly tattoos, somebody chasing a red ball in the middle of traffic, a lot of nights I dream about being on a bus going the wrong way, or running to catch the subway but missing it. Lott a symbolism in there. I don’t over analyze ’em. Man, it’s fucking cold here this morning and all the Big 5 mockingbird pig-media headlines scream about alien invasions. Chinese balloon, Chinese bats, more billions for Zelnsky and the NFL. My kid asked me why I don’t like football and I told him it’s probably cause my mom sent me to the richkid suburban football school, hoping I’d get a better education than at the downtown poor school, but what I saw was football being used to train the kids for war, and accept inequality and obey whoever wears a whistle around their neck. Those special privilege sportos from back then are still abusers, still bullies, and forever identified with their team colors-just like all the political party people who don’t care about injustice, they just wanna be on the winning team. Few people teach their youth to treat others with knidness, consideration and mercy, they just teach them to win at all costs. I don’t even talk to people I thought were my lifelong friends on the phone no more caues they are too busy winning and Thanking Obama for keeping it classy. Suggestible Murkkkans will still believe anything the tv tells ’em and call that science-ever since 9/11, the permanent ruling class here know they can sell any garbage to the people using tv, and they will eat it up with a spoon for fear of being called unwoke or anti-scientific or Russian influenced or conspiracy theorists. Even the Architects and Engineers For 9/11 Truth, even Sy Hersh. They censor Spike Lee movies, censor Oliver Stone films, and people who consider themselves liberals think that’s okeydokey cause they just wanna Thank Obama some more. There’s a big movement to organize Anti-War marches in this country but the usual Bot Armies are deployed to deligitimize that very healthy, sane instinct. There will always be someone you do not agree with anywhere you go, but teh Sensitivity Spacers have been taught to cancel anyone they disagree with about anything ever for wokeness, how did we go from don’t abuse people with hate speech to obey the establishment all the time or else, in one generation? If you don’t keep fulltime custody of your own kids, they will be conditioned by someone else, most often the capitalist hierarchy and the Honky Death machine which forever insists that might makes right. Most wingnuts AND shitlibs I know are still suckers for these fuckedup forver wars ever since Cheney and Rumsfeld told ’em it was Saddam Hussain and “The Muslims” comin’ for their freedom fries, and Obama said we can’t look back. Somehow, people still believe those puppet politicians on the red carpet in the cloth masks are telling them the truth because five or six of them are of varying hues and there is also a gay guy not mentioning the train explosion in Ohio. Man, it’s a fuckedup world, I gave up on relating to the safespacers back when they all went grunge and Kathleen Hannah was campaigning for Hillary Clinton, I had to walk away from the shitlib privilege people. Having said that, I’d still go to the Anti War Protest if I was not otherwise indisposed by family medical obligations and urge anybody with a car and some gas money to show up even if you disapprove of some Ron Paul donor or know that Tulsi gabbard is controlled opposition army psy ops division. You can not have any sortof demonstration in this country without the government sending in the masked Proud Boy government informant tupes to break a window and blame the protestors, that’s just how it is. They got so good at Cointelpro bullshit that nowadays, they even Cointelpro the Right. None of the mean ex liberals, Thank Obamas, Green days, or former punk celebrity classers say anything against the war, they all avoid political discourse except when it’s time to wave a flag for war or vote for the War Party some more cause they got polite pro nouns and five women of color upfront voting like Republikkkans. It’s all just gimmick bands of Johnny Thunders covers. I remember writing in one of my notebooks, “The World Needs More Johnny Thunders Cover Bands” way back in the old times and of course, I was kinda joking. Write a song about something that’s affecting you now. Your own song. All the print press is gone in my country or like music and tv weaponized to promote war and the future microchip police state with the robot dogs and obedience scores already being rolled out incrementally. Ya know I really liked how Prince was influencing rappers in the late eighties more than I did when the rappers were influencing Prince in the mid nineties. I definitely went through a deeply devoted Del La Soul and PM DAWN phase, I loved how both of those bands were brave enough to do the unexpected and used creativity to stay fresh and original so I saw them as kindred spirits even if I was a whiskey sodden purple cowboy goth back then, I loved their slightly psychedelic pop vibes. So did both of my old bassplayers Bobby and John. Sadly, Bobby died of unknown causes, just suddenly a couple years back. I really miss the man. Of course Prince Be is already gone, too. Always seems kinda sad to me when all the rappers and pop tarts make the one eye sign in all their photos. I dunno what’s up with that but I remember being real enamored with all these guys in like 87 or whatever who were sampling real unexpected shit-that’s what it meant to be fresh back in the day, not 100 artists all doing the same identical, choreographed Squid Game occult ritual bullshit.
