Jonny Kaplan is a rare bird, a throwback to like, Taj Mahal, John Trudell, or Jackson Browne. When I was growing up, my heroes were always punks, lightning rods, shit stirrers, and radical truth tellers like Bill Hicks, Abbie Hoffman, Joe Strummer, Steve Earle. Cats like Lenny Bruce and Abbie Hoffman did not believe in walking on eggshells, safespace sensitivity feelings-studies at the posh privileged, protected class, navel gaze university, or having sacred cows. Shitlibs of today would have cancelled civil rights era comedians like Paul Mooney, Dick Gregory, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin. Writers like Hunter S. Thompson and Charles Bukowski. Music used to elevate the consciousness of the people, from Woody Guthrie to the Fugs and John Peel to the punk rock era of Crass and Dead Kennedys, and hiphop of Public Enemy and Immortal Tech and Boots Riley. Gradually, over time, in the Bush/Cheney era, there was all this deep state/corporate media kickback, demonetizing new cold war flack, New McCarthyist blacklists and shitlib deplatformings, whenever a songwriter or artist used their platform to righteously advocate for peace, or oppose the fascists, like with the Dixie Chicks. A band like Manic Street Preachers almost never got any airplay in the USA, they demonized Sinead O’Connor for telling her truth, killed Tupac Shakur, took music off MTV, and blacklisted all antiwar songs after Bush/Cheney’s 9/11. I was not into that much of the Wilco, Counting Crows, Sheryl Crowe, “No Depression” era college rock scene of the nineties, cause to me, most of it felt like generic Replacements and Tom Petty ripoffs, with some steel guitar added, as a shtick or afterthought. One songwriter that came outta the whole Wallflowers, Wilco, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams era who I could really vibe with, was Jonny Kaplan, whose mellow gold “California Heart”, ridin’ free into the sunset, highway songs reminded me of Gram Parsons and Bob Dylan. His band had that same feel as early Black Crowes or Wallflowers, who I really liked. His songs are full of heart and thoughtful purple prose. I’ve known him for a long time and miss seeing his posts on the social media, cause he’s never been shy about standing up for what he believes in or saying his truth from the heart, so I decided we should catch up over coffee and here’s our interview.
GENERAL LABOR: Hey Jonny, how ya doin’? Yeah I been laying low, too, everything has become so Bizarro World. All I see is fake news, fake medicine, fake food, fake music, fake politicians. I’m just gonna have some coffee here this morning, looking out my picture window at a tree on the edge of a dead end desrt ghost town where old people come to die, mostly, and talk like we’re in the same place together and you just feel free to answer and impart anything you care to, in your own way, type some shit, tell me what you think about this whole kooky culture of Dick Cheney gulags and proxy mercenary coups and forever wars. I’ll be doing a series of chats like this with other rocknroll aficionados, too. What’s goin’ on with you?
JONNY KAPLAN: Hey brother! I’’m doing well , thanks. It’s been an interesting few years eh?
I for one , really enjoyed the free time I had when the world closed down . It was nice to not have to think about the music-biz-shuck-and-jive for a while … and just ….be. I luckily bought a lovely old sailboat in Florida , right before the plandemic , and just laid low there.
GENERAL LABOR: Before you got hacked and I got lockedout by the spooks for all my anti war shitposting, I remember you and Jimmy Ashurst from the Juju Hounds and Broken Homes were playing some shows and really actively campaigning for Bernie, same as me. I was shocked when Bloomberg spent a billion to undermine the Bernie Sanders tax the rich populist platform that filled stadiums, all those corporate Democrats slandering him as a sexist, and smearing all us power to the people working class folks as “Bernie Bros”. That was farout, but then, Bernie and army psy ops soldier Tulsi Gabbard who I thought was antiwar cause she went to Syria with Kucinich, they all lined up to endorse Crime Bill Author. Patriot Act Pusher. Strom Thurmond Buddy, Anita Hill and Tare Reade gaslighter, Joe Biden, That horrified me, I kinda lost faith in all of ’em. AOC campaigned on forcing the vote for universal healthcare and reuniting families in the border gulags but then dropped all those issues when Pelosi told her to. Kucinich says there are no real antiwar progressives in the DNC. Everybody on the left got kicked off of youtube and stuff during the Fauchi/Zelensky rollouts, they kicked off Abby Martin and Chris Hedges, Lee Camp, and Jimmy Dore from all these platforms, they erased endless hours of interviews with everybody from Dr. Malone to RFK Jr. to Dr. Cornell West and Dr. Jill Stein. but it turns out, they were all the ones who were correct about so much regarding the actual history of events, and telling the truth and having all the legitimate scientific facts, and understanding of the Minsk Agreement, while the techlord censors and mainstream media was actually wrong, or complicit, or knowingly lying for big business and weapons makers. Anyone challenging the dummy marketing slogans of known liars was repeatedly smeared as pinkos and commies, just like in the old cold war Lenny Bruce era. Did you ever think this country would regress back to loving the secret police, championing J. Edgar Hoover and demonizing antiwar voices like in the McCarthy Age?
JONNY KAPLAN: Yes , Jimmy and I have been pals and musical cohorts for years. We played a bunch of cool things together at that time. I took the Lazy Stars down to Argentina , where we headlined The San Pedro Country Music Festival! Super , duper fun. We also did an “educational tour” of Argentina, where we played at a bunch of music schools, and held some workshops for the students. It was RAD.
The Bernie gig was a real hoot. His campaign flew us out to Denver , where we warmed up the crowd of 10,000 Berners and helped him celebrate his birthday.
I was a big supporter. I love the guy , and always will , but I lost respect for him when he “took a dive”.
Yes , they ALL let us down. Why? Because it’s not left vs. right. It’s US vs THEM. Once people realize that there’s more to it that a red or blue football game …. we , as a whole … can do what we need to do. Isn’t this a music interview? Let’s just listen to Lemmy: EAT THE RICH!!
GENERAL LABOR: I think the right in this country were as shocked as I was when the deep state even gave them the Cointelpro business, like all the honky rednecks thought if they had a flag and a relative on the force, they could pretty much be as rowdy as they want. That’s always been the case in sports towns anyway, like in Ohio all the rich white fratboys can set the town on fire if they lose a football game. Astonishingly, though,The Blue Lives Matter Maga people were hammered non stop for challenging election results which many of us on the skeptical Left also disbelieved. After the Maga Tantrums at Capital Hill, AOC and the Squad helped superfund the police, even after the four years of unprecedented George Floyd and Eric Garner coast to coast protests and uprisings in Ferguson and Baltimore against the cops murdering people at a rate of 3-6 a day in this country. Then, all but one of ’em sided with the bosses against the railroad workers. What are your impressions about these strange times we are living in?
JONNY KAPLAN: We are in scary times . But we are also in a time of GREAT awakening. Spiritual leaders have been saying this for years. It just makes sense that since humanity is in a state of great awakening, the dirtbags running the show are trying even harder to put their boots on our necks. They are scared. And , they should be scared.
GENERAL LABOR: All we heard for years was Bill Gates is a saintly philanthropist and Donald Trump was to Blame For All Of It. Now it seems to have shifted to Zelensky is a Super Savior and Putin Is To Blame For All Of It, modern society feels so dumbed down, like DC Comics in the fifties, or pro wrestling in the 80’s. now here we are. Did you see any grass roots musicians flying across the country to campaign for a Joe Biden’s “Nothing Will Change” platform? Do you think they threatened Sanders, or was he like Bruce Dixon and so many on the left have said all along, always a DNC services corporation controlled ops/sheep dog? What’s your take? I know you’ve met him in real life, why do you suspect he has he gone along with the pro war Biden agenda? I know Lockheed Martin is the biggest employer of his home state.
JONNY KAPLAN: Sadly , we’ll see plenty of “rockstars” helping campaign for sleepy Joe or whomever the DNC picks. People will line up to suck on the corporate titty. The number of musicians the have stood up against all the tyranny of the last few years is surprisingly small. Clapton and Van Morrison come to mind. And , the left cancelled them because of it. Pathetic.
I do think Bernie is a sheepdog, but I don’t know if he realizes it. I think he is a good person , and really thinks he’s doing the best he can. Maybe he thinks he’s taken it as far as he can? Or maybe he KNOWS that he couldn’t take it farther. Who knows.
GENERAL LABOR: You still in Florida? That rightwing governor down there did not kill all the mom n pop businesses off, like they did in blue states during the Covid Panic, but he was involved in torturing people at Gitmo. Do you think he will be the next President?
JONNY KAPLAN: I just got back to Florida . I’m fixing ups my boat and preparing it for some extended cruising this summer. I’m also looking forward to some European dates in the fall. Riding around in a van with people I love , and playing rock and roll in different cities … will be VERY NICE. It’s been a while!
I don’t know Desantis’ whole story , but I like him. Of course , I like him as much as you can like any politician. He definitely made things easier for people in Florida . And much to the chagrin of the left , most of his health based decisions … were spot on. If he runs , I think he’ll win.
GENERAL LABOR: Weren’t you telling me the Gutter Cats have some old demos available for fans to hear online? Or can they order hard copies somewhere?
JONNY KAPLAN: There’s an 80’s glam metal label that offers us a deal every year. The guys in the band just don’t seem to want to bother. Anthon , the drummer and I are still very close , and he , was talking about setting up a page somewhere , where people could download the stuff. I’ll remind him.
GENERAL LABOR: Is there any recorded or video taped evidence of Mystery City online? What have you been doing musically since the whole death plague and WW3 brinksmanship shit hit the fan? Have you played out anywhere? I tried to follow your lead and quit dyeing my hair for awhile, but then I got tired of looking like some crazy old desert hermit and went back to boxed blue/black. What was the last song you wrote?
JONNY KAPLAN: Ah man , Mystery City! I’ve recently reconnected with the singer. He lives in Germany now with his wife. We only made a 3 or 4 song “demo” that we never released . At least ..while I was in the band. I’d have to dig up the cassette. I know that I still have it. We also played on “The Uncle Floyd Show” once. It was a legendary punk rock TV show out of North Jersey . I’ve searched and searched on youtube , but haven’t found our episode. I was like 17 years old.
I’ve been slowly working on a few ideas lately . Super folky , mellow , acoustic numbers. One is jut about wandering around the West Coast. It’s a good one.
GENERAL LABOR: What kinda music do you listen to for personal pleasure nowadays? What contemporary artists do you appreciate or admire? Who are some remaining songwriters that are still vital with something to say? What do you think of the former Hanoi Rocks’ guys current output? I got Andy McCoy’s book for Xmas cause the Razzle one costs too much and in it he was goin’ after Lenny Kravitz for saying “Rock IS Dead”, but as far as any real presence on the Big5 corporate media airwaves, it’s only deployed to help sell war or wrestling events. What do you think is gonna happen in this crazy world? Iggy has a new song called “Modern Age Ripoff” and that’s what everything sounds like to me.
JONNY KAPLAN: I listen to everything , and I like little bits of everything , but I have “my thing” you know? Like we all do. Believe it or not , I’ve been on a real metal kick lately: Judas Preist , Deep Purple and Sabbath.
I don’t think Rock is dead , but Rock is certainly not mainstream. There are tons of cool , young bands out there tearing it up. And , tons of kids going to see them. Will they become huge? Who knows , but the way the business is now? If you get huge ? You ain’t rock and roll. If you get huge? You are playing the game to be there. There is no revolution in corporate rock.
GENERAL LABOR: So crazy how those Crosby/Young dudes were all so gung ho and ginned up to censor other artists during the plague when Rogan was correct about the science and was only guilty of interviewing doctors and academics, they never even apologized for trying to fuckup his livelihood. Also crazy that Crosby and Young stopped talking for all those years, their too rich man feuds were like the opposite of hippie dreamers. Did you ever read that book “Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine” about all those aging industry people from Laurel Canyon having ties to the permanent ruling class/military industrial complex, yet? Crosby hated punk rock, hell, he even hated Jim Morrison. I think those guys remind me of you sometimes cause they used to be Woodstock progressives and hippie peaceniks and cause you have the pirate sailing thing in common!
JONNY KAPLAN: Hahah! Me and Cros have (had RIP) similar sailor vibes. Actually , his autobiography was pretty inspirational to me in that respect.
Yeah , I was and still am really let down when I see so called “progressives” trying to stifle free speech. AOC does it too. They all do. It’s insane. When we were growing up we knew that you “have to let the nazis march , because they have a right to free speech whether we agree or not” I still believe that. I’m not a huge Elon fan , but we’re seeing him get the hot seat right now for the same reason.
GENERAL LABOR: When you talk to people on your travels here and abroad, cause I know you mingle with both show biz famous folks and blue collar everyday proles like me, do people seem to know anything about what’s going on with the Davos billionaires buying up all the farmland and Blackrock and Vanguard owning all the real estate and media, or do people you talk to still seem lost in an outdated Red Versus Blue partisan hypnospell? is there any hope for artists and entertainers raising consciousness anymore, or is that just a done deal with all the tech censor spooks taking control of social platforms and old media pushing propaganda all day with dumed down repetition? How do you cope with all the pro war bullshit and glorification of the capitalist Empire? What do you do to stay sane, have fun, live thrive and survive in these darkening days?
JONNY KAPLAN: I think a lot of folks are waking up. It’s probably more than we think , because we are dealing with so much censorship in the media , it’s really hard to gauge these things.
I do think artists can raise consciousness , but the listen has to be open to it. Right now , now one is open to debate , not even to listen to another point of view . It’s just this “my side , your side” mass formation bullshit.
Fun? Brother , this is the most political charged interview I’ve ever done , but I do not spend my days thinking about this stuff. I enjoy the world I live in every day. The earth is still a gorgeous , magic place , full of beautiful , thoughtful people. I just drove across the country , met all sorts of weirdos along the way , got to my beautiful pirate ship , that I’m fixing up for some grand adventures this year! The media wants everyone to be afraid and sad and confused every day. Don’t fucking fall for it.
