That’s basically all I wanna do nowadays. On the rarer and rarer occassion I’m permitted some free time to let my hair down, have a drink, I’m a lightweight now, just end up feeling really happy for about two hours while watching old MTV videos before falling asleep and retreating into my dreams. I used to have friends who shared my love and appreciation for bands like the Jesus & Mary Chain and Sisters Of Mercy, but now it’s just me out here on my own, I can barely even bother to tape record any of the songs I involuntarily sometimes still halfheartedly write with ever diminishing quality and frequency. It just seems pointless without someone to share it with-just me and the drum machine. Dr. Jeep plays on with or without me, but me, maybe it’s the winter or lack of support, I’m just not feeling the old passions fulltime like I used to, maybe it will return, I’m not content with Netflix or the rocking chair at all. “I got nothin’ to say, I’ve said it before, I’ve bled all I can I won’t bleed no more, I don’t need nobody to understand…” Ya know? I mean I got the archives out there if the right sitation arose, but it’s getting more and more painful waiting for the right day and less and less likely I’m gonna find some Derwood Andrews or Honeyman Scott collaborator out here in the cold and windy ghostlands. It’s a bummer, man. A bad buzzkill bummer.

Then in about the sixth grade, me and my friend Sean located the keys to his mom’s glorious bar, we liked to party and started early. We always believed that was what it was all about. Then, we discovered Prince. “If you didn’t come to party, don’t bother knockin’ on my door!” And Van Halen. We knew we were right. That might be the one thing I had in common with Poison besides the makeup and scarves and ripping off Hanoi Rocks and Van Halen-the desire to live life to it’s maximum volume. Boogie around the campfire. Fill the cooler, prepare the flask. Start putting on makeup, we are on our way to The Show. Poison frontman Brett Michaels continues to tour relentlessly in spite of a long list of health problems, he’s kinda become a Jimmy Buffet like Brand to a certain flag waving, sports loving, unreality tv watching, big truck driving, middle class suburban demographic. I’d say he appeals to mostly women who bleach their hair blonde, who were teenagers in the eighties, and former jocks who would never, never, never have admitted to liking Poison in the eighties. I can still VIVIDLY remember a lunch room encounter with some downtown white trash stoners who were into Bon Jovi, Ratt, Ozzy, Slayer…they drew the fucking line with Guns N Roses and Posion. “Fags”. Makeup wearers. In a way, Poison helped my cause in the midwest because prior to their big breakthrough, the closest thing to what I was all about anybody ever saw on tv was maybe the Cure or Billy Idol. Poison turned every girl’s bedroom into a big fan magazine glam pinup collage, overnight. These chicks who liked Matt Dillon or C Thomas Howell or Rob Lowe all became Poison girls and yeah Bon Jovi, too. I remember thinking their lip print and dayglo slides staging was pretty epic when I first saw the “Talk Dirty To Me” video. I was out in deep suburbia visiting my friends Autumn and Latrelle-their old school ranch style house was actually the first place my teenage band, Harlot ever played, when her parents were outta town. That first Poison “Talk Dirty” video? I liked it. They were like some super commercial, shiny toy company hybrid of Hanoi Rocks with Van Halen minus any intelligent bits. Perfect for middle Amurkkka’s teen angels, but like I said, it’d be another five years before midwestern males could even begrudgingly admit to liking any of their shit. I thought “I Want Action” was kinda dumb though. Dudes would have to slowdance at the preppie bar to “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”, eventually. By that time, “Sweet Child” and “Paradise City” had helped normalize some eyeliner abuse among the jocks and farmboys. Their parents all liked that awful Loggins & Messina song, “Your Mama Don’t Dance.” That “Unkskinny Bop” bullshit was inexcusable, just terrible, beyond hokey-why didn’t anybody tell ’em? My suspician is the juggernaut had already left the station and they just could not write songs very well. It’s my understanding that even “Talk Dirty” was a tune carried over from one of CC’s former bands. “Something To Believe In” was some overwrought attempt at writing “Rose” Part 2. As a lifelong dishwasher I appreciated the dishwasher quits fantasy of “Don’t Need Nothin’ But A Good Time”. I guess they really had three songs plus a KISS cover. A beautuful, beautiful girl I thought I really had a chance with, she was an artist and liked rocknroll, we’ll call her Vickie, she left me in the dust after a tour bus encounter with her rock god pinup Bobby Doll. I guess I left her house once drunkenly wearing her Zorro bolero hat and she harassed my guitar player at our job for months after that, just kept calling and calling. “Vickie Wants Her Hat Back”. That should be a song title ya know, I’ll make it an acoustic power ballad with mainstream patriotic, aw, shucks commercial country, denim wearing, leisure oriented, lifeguard bronzed, eighties retro nostalgia for people who like to party down by the river. Ya know I think I first started glimpsing pix of old Nick Cave and company in punk mags in NYC when I was about 14. Wow, man. Him and Lydia. I wanted his hair. Who was the crazy, debaucherous songwriting son of a bitch? Back then, there was no Youtube and he was not played often on MTV, it was little by little we’d find out about these exotic artists from foreign lands, somethin’ in RE/Search or Search N Destroy or maybe Trouser Press, just a little bit at a time. One track on a compilation tape somebody would send you from france, that kinda thing, it was a slow go learning about your punk faves back then, but once we got a load of BIRTHDAY PARTY, it was a revelation we loved Bauhaus but these guys had a STOOGES like intensity. And let’s not forget that once mighty hair! That’s what we wanted our band to look like! They seemed more dangerous than our deeply cherished Cramps, and more poetic than the Pistols. That was our calling, what we thought we should do. We scared summa the temporary bandmates off with all the raging and heavy boozing, but we continued to form new linesups for about twenty years. none of ’em ever stayed together long enough to really accomplish that much, sadly, but the Birthday Party was the blueprint, and then we found out about the Beasts Of Bourbon. And the Coma-Tones! That was our scene. Nick Cave is still hard to beat and I still listen to Rowland S. Howard almost all the time. I used to know a girl with a Rowland tattoo. I was saying to one of my capitalist former bandmates we should give our music away for free like 20 years ago and he thought that was the most blasphemous profane shit he’d ever heard but I noted his big city band just made all their songs free online. I miss having a band because it’s a way, way, way more effective vehicle for sending ideas out to the world than any kinda effort to lift consciousness by writing diaries or manifstos on the internet. My longtime love here sometimes says to me I need to become more realistic and admit to myself that I’m never gonna relive any of that, or have a band like that again in this lifetime, and we are sick to death of the Agenda 21 big city gentrification rat racing and mimosa bruncher rich kid bullshit, so she has brought me to the middle of the most remote deadend desert graveyard town you can imagine, but I’m not really one who ever stops kicking against the pricks. Man, was it ever wonderful speaking with you the other day for so long. I loved it all, but one thing did bother me. You not getting The Who. Here are a few tunes by my top five band of all time that you will hopefully get. Way better than anything The Stones ever did, and I like those guys as well. To this day, The Who concert I saw in 1976 at Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium in Detroit, standing just 35 yards from the stage at ground level along with 76 thousand of my fellow Michiganders is still the greatest live music event I have ever seen. The Who were the first British Punk band. Their energy and angst were the blueprint for all the anarchy that was to follow them. Nothing comes close. Pete’s music and lyrics are the stuff of genius. No band can match The Who ‘s energy. Moon was one of a kind, a true innovator. And those bass lines! Roger’s screams, only Wilson Picket came close. If you play Juggernaut off my CD and then listen to Punk Meets the Godfather, you will hear the songs inspiration. Punk is one of my all-time favorite Who songs, so why not try to write it all over again? The Who are one of the main bands that Joe Hutchinson and I really bond over. You will never love (or even like) The Who like Joe and I do, and that’s Ok. But you have to give them there due and get what a force of nature that they were, and still are.
Ok, so I know you’ve heard this last one a thousand times, but these lyrics, the energy, the power. This is the musical equivalent to a hungry jungle cat being set free from a cage in the middle of a herd of Gazelle. When I watch this I’m back in Detroit and it is 1976 all over again. I feel the energy, I hear the power chords, I see the lasers and the young girls in the shammy halter tops. I just wish you could have been there with me and my friends. You would have loved it and you would then get The Who.
