Would you believe these guys came to town but I missed ’em cause i was goin’ through a breakup and shit and just did not wanna be around the trust fund people who ran the shit bar in the grunge years? Sometimes, it can really get you down. Murkka music scenes are all monopolized by predators and money havers. I always knew I’d fit in way better Down Under. I love rocknroll ya know? The Beasts Of Bourbon, the Surrealists and the Scientists, These Immortal Souls, Spencer P. Jones playing with the Gun Club, Fur Bible….Everybody affiliated with that whole scene, they are all geniuses-it astounds me. When I was a runaway kid, even if I was sitting tow stools away from that guy, I just became a shrinking wallflower kinda slipped away. He frightened me, honestly, it was just too much. I recognized I was sometimes in the presence of real outlaw greatness but what would I even have to say to that guy, all I had to talk about back then was how I was in love with a girl who liked the Smiths but her parents hated me, I kept getting beatup all the time because I wore makeup, and how I really liked the Lords Of The New Church. Not that many adults were that interested in hearing a drunk teenager talk about that stuff. Whenever I think of Jim Thirwell, I think genius. Like Nick Cave and Prince and Phoebe Legere level genius. Makes me wonder how Trent Reznor was allowed to slip into the mainstream back before grunge. Thirwell is timeless. Truly epic. Excessively brilliant, too much, really. When I was 14 and 15, I had a much older girlfriend who I livved with who taught me about everything and probably saved my life in many ways, she ran around with all those people-the underground of the Lower east Side, I was so young that all I could really feel about the older artists she was friends with was a sortof detached awe or bitter jealousy, I mean all those cats she socialized with were way beyond my frame of reference I was so, so outta my depth, there was no way for me as a smalltown greasy punk to compete with all these realized artistes so I did not really even try-I thought they were super intimidating even as they became everyday fixtures who I saw all the time-Foetus, Zedd, Kern, the dude from the Swans, they all lived in my neighborhood back then but I was just too shy to really get that involved with any of them. I do remember having some good conversations with Stiv Bators, Peter Zaremba, John Spacely. I used to help Spacely shoplift from that bottle store on Astor Place.
