British trio GIRLS IN SYNTHESIS are hard to describe, evolving somewhere between noisy rock and post-punk. Embracing the DIY ethics since 2016 the band is also more a collective than a traditional group, think CRASS for instance! This new EP is out on German label Hound Gawd Records and opens with “Pulling Teeth”, a 9 minute song with a repetitive krautrock beat and aggressive distortion. The second part of the song sounds a bit like a spoken word mixed to SUICIDE and ATARI TEENAGE RIOT. “Enveloped” brings out industrial elements to the dark party with vocals reminding a bit of PIL while “Bypassing” mixes dark techno to noisy rock in a very interesting way. Then, right after the cold and post-apocalyptic “Interlude” you’ll dive into frozen post-punk with “The Engine” which is described as “A nauseous blend of high anxiety in the modern age.” Quite a good soundtrack for today’s society! /Laurent C.

King Brothers “Wasteland”
Japan’s KING BROTHERS have their own vision of garage rock’n’roll in which classic STONES guitar riffs and harp meet modern deconstructed drum beats. Known for their energetic live shows, the power trio managed to re-create this wild and furious atmosphere in songs like “No Want”, “The Machine”, or “Bang Blues” in order to give birth to some kind of noisy and hypnotic chaos. This is raw and dirty, but you’ll still find some melodies (“The Farthest End”, “No Thanks.”) “Kick Ass Rock” and “Sympathy For The XXXXX” get their influences straight from anthemic 60s/70s rock’n’roll songs, but still dance on the craziness edge while “Break On Through” is pure noise punk. The ghost of The WHO can even be heard in “No No No”!
While their 2001 album was released by Toshiba EMI in Japan, this new album is out on Hound Gawd! Records and there’s a limited edition of 100 copies on orange vinyl. This probably won’t be your neighbour’s favourite new record, but if you think that rock’n’roll is doomed to its past, then check out “Wasteland”! /Laurent C.

Choke Chains “Android Sex Worker”
CHOKE CHAINS are back with a second album, 11 songs available on beautiful limited edition green vinyl. CHOKE CHAINS‘ music is full of punk/noise/psych references, but they manage to mix them all, and create something very personal. Opener “Big Data Skeptic” is epileptic in a NO MEANS NO way, “Mayan Starship” has a bit of CRAMPS in it, while you’ll hear some punk rock in “Cairo Scolars”, and some garage in “Rat Ladder.” CHOKE CHAINS like their rock’n’roll full of distorted vocals, noisy guitars and larsens, they actually sometimes remind me of GIRLS AGAINST BOYS on “Android Sex Worker”, “Put Your Hands”, or “Lie From Hell” for instance. On this new album, the band knows how to get chaotic without forgetting how to rock, you can even sing along on “Galactic Overlord” or dance to “I Will Break You.”
“Android Sex Worker” also brings early MUDHONEY to mind at times although it definitely has a more apocalyptic, darker vibe, which must be something to experience live. Hound Gawd! Records has brought us a great record again! /Laurent C.

Brat Farrar “III”
BRAT FARRAR‘s 7″ “Being With You” was quite a good surprise last year. Here he is back with a 10 song album released by Off The Hip Records on CD, and Kizmiaz Records on vinyl.
“On Your Mind” opens this album in a straight noisy punk way, as if The PXIES did speed for breakfast! The 90s alternative rock influence is still strong in songs like “Make You Mine”, “When I Wake”, “Last Summer”, or “Try To Get Away” and its SONIC YOUTH feel.
At times, some songs get more experimental/shoegazey (“Sugar Coloured Dream” and “Downtown”), and it all gets very interesting when BRAT FARRAR explore darker territories (“Never Gonna Go”, “Waiting For You To Call”) in which 80s synths mix with alternative rock. You’ll even get a surf rock’n’roll touch in “And You Know It Now”! If you miss noisy pop and need to listen to something new in that style, then look no further! /Laurent C.
Choke Chains “Cairo Scholars” 7″
Dark punk rock from Grand Rapids, Michigan, with an original member of DIRTBOMBS (Thomas Jackson Potter), and quite a cool band name, this sounds quite interesting, right? “Cairo Scholars” brings JESUS LIZARD, or even The CRAMPS to mind with some violent, hypnotic, noisy punk rock’n’roll that sounds just as if the band was practicing in your garage. On B side, “Billy The Monster” is a DEVIANTS cover that perfectly fits with CHOKE CHAINS‘ spirit: Creepy, danceable, and chaotic at the same time!
Orange might not be the easiest colour to wear these days, but it looks great on this 7″ vinyl brought to us by Hound Gawd! Records. These two songs will be on the apocalypse setlist, but I really hope I will get to hear more before it happens! /Laurent C.
Brat Farrar “Being With You” 7″
Bela Lugosi on the cover, cool clear vinyl record, this is a good start! BRAT FARRAR is actually Sam Agostino (DIGGER AND THE PUSSYCATS/KAMIKAZE TRIO/RUSSIAN ROULETTES) doing everything by himself, in the pure DIY way!
“Being With You That Night” has a bit of a MISFITS feel, straight forward dark punk rock, “Let It Go” sounds more 90s indie punk, even bringing some early DINOSAUR JR. to mind, and “Feel This Way” is a catchy new wave/noisy punk song that will appeal to WIRE fans.
This 7″ displays quite an interesting mix of influence and a strong identity, definitely worth checking out!/Laurent C.
