Way back when, ya know Kid Creole was one of the most mesmerizing entertainers-part Dean Martin, part Morris Day, Cab Calloway and Louis Prima/Sam Butera/Keeley Smith with a Desi Arnez Carribean band, sexy background dancers, a lovable sidekick in Coati Mundi, and a David Lee Roth playboy bon vivant lady lovin’, larger than life zoot suited, beach destination, champagne swillin’, fun having persona. I used to connect with that song “Endicott” as a young kid cause I have always been in that leaky boat where some sewing circle, meanspirited chorus of harpies are always demanding to know why I am not a better earner and provider and why I refuse to be more like the Smilin’ Bob lawnmower guy on the grass is greener side of town. When Kid Creole would respond with those effortless three magic words, it always felt so beautifully liberating! I never said I was Ned Flanders or Dudley Do-Right or here to please the in laws. Or earn a merit badge from the district supervisor. Somewhere on the trip I lost my sense of humor and sense of confidence.

I was in love with a Smiths chick in the leafy green deep honky suburbs, also a NYC downtown socialite, Bianca Jagger lookalike in the Bowery ghetto, a Depeche Mode girl in Indiana, I was always falling in love. We used to drink a lot and laughed and cried and split our sides at what they told us.

I’ll tell ya how it went for me-everytime! Everytime one of my many revolving lineup, set to self destruct before we even got our fifteen minutes of free drinks and infamy, ramshackle bands of flashmetal suicide and gothic cowpunk gutter angels hit our stride, everytime we started getting written about in magazines, or photographed at nightclubs for the social page of the entertainment weekly, writing what I think are still viable underground hit songs galore, everytime we were supposed to like, lay down a dozen songs on tape, somebody would always split the scene and leave us scrambling for overnight and under-rehearsed replacements. If you never get a chance to really live near each other and bond, it’s just a mercenary scene, people come and leave the next day, first time there’s any small challenge at all, they’re gone, gone, gone, cause most of ’em just wanna be in some get rich capitalist ratrace popularity contest, anyways. Man, bands are so hard. I think my first band was breaking up right around the same time as the Soho Roses. All us Kerrang! reading glam blouses always loved the Soho Roses, famous for being Hanoi Rocks and London Cowboys like, flashy, trashy glam pirates, they sashayed straight to the front of the Marquee’s mid eighties glam scene that co starred groups like Kill City Dragons, the Babysitters, Gunfire Dance, Quireboys and Dogs D’Amour, releasing a debut and a series of eps that all the Dollsy glam trash kids loved. They were really poppy, even did a Buzzcocks cover. Andy ‘The Riff’ Socratous from one of Razzle’s old bands the Dark had a punkband called the V2’s, and Andy The Riff was soon replaced by Andy J. Davies and they changed the name to the glorious Soho Roses. Singer Paul Blitz was a real pretty pinup boy and they seemed like they were almost ready for primetime after releasing a smash hit single “So Alone” that was tearin’ up the charts deep inside out glammy punk hearts back in ’88 or ’89, but as is almost always the case, they brokeup having creative differences among all the bottle strewn stages and pink smoke and confetti. Paul Blitz joined Scarlet Tears. Joolz and Pat had a band on fat Wreck Chords called Guns N Wankers.I seem to remember that label Full Breach Records who released their snazzy retrospective really liking some old demos of mine but by the time, I’d managed to get ’em to listen to it, both guitarists had suddenly moved on to better funded musical operations in the big city and that was that. It don’t come easy.
