Bitch Queens “Party Hard(ly)” EP

The ever so productive BITCH QUEENS from Basel, Switzerland are back with 5 new songs following their last album “Custom Dystopia” released last year. The opening song “Party Hard(ly)” sounds like a tribute to TURBONEGRO (especially because of the backing vocals), “Stay Here Forever” is a punk rock meets FOO FIGHTERS tune sung by drummer Harry Darling (he also sings on the darker hardcore stained “Be No Evil”) while “Recycled Youth” sounds more like classic fast punk rock’n’roll and “These Secrets” opens with a SEX PISTOLS guitar riff. You will probably have understood by now that this EP is quite eclectic, opening new doors for the band. Still rockin’! /Laurent C.

Bitch Queens “Custom Dystopia”

BITCH QUEENS took some time to record 12 new songs in their home studio during the pandemic and that’s the best thing they could do… “Burn It Down” opens in a quite usual TURBONEGRO way for them but “Con Man Contraband” offers us an interesting mix of heavy rock and metal core before “The Apocalypse” goes further into their modern hard rock search. You’ll even get slight pop touches in “Don’t Be That Dude”, some pop punk with “The Worst Thing” and even a bit of anarcho-punk with “Custom Dystopia”! Although they’ve been playing around with different music styles this time, songs like “Brainwash Radio”, “A Good Day To Forget”, “Ignorance Is Bliss”, “This Is How We Roll In 2020” and a straight forward chorus like in “FU Emily” all show us that BITCH QUEENS still know how to write and play good old punk’n’roll songs but who can resist a little disco rock touch (“Sugar Balls”)? “Custom Dystopia” is definitely BITCH QUEENS‘ most adventurous album, the Basel Böys managed to show us that they can still evolve in a dead end world and keep their Turbojungen roots at the same time. Bravo! /Laurent C.

Bitch Queens/Delilahs’77 “Split” 7″

Swiss bands BITCH QUEENS and DELILAHS’77 are celebrating their friendship with this punk tribute split 7″ vinyl record. DELILAHS’77 are offering us their own version of The MISFITS “Some Kinda Hate” which almost sounds like The UNDERTONES, great cover! BITCH QUEENS chose DEAD KENNEDY‘s classic “Too Drunk To Fuck” and turn it into a catchy punk’n’roll song. Listening to this makes you think that it’s definitely too short. The vinyl comes out in three different colours on Lux Noise Records. There will always be something cool about split 7″ records. /Laurent C.

Bitch Queens “City Of Class”

Basel’s Turbojugend is alive and well! BITCH QUEENS proves it with this new album full of high energy punk’n’roll songs (“City Of Class”, “Vote For Pedro”.) Switzerland might look nice and clean but it has its hidden perversions, and BITCH QUEENS are definitely one of those! Of course, they still sound like TURBONEGRO (“Süperböy”) but they do it really well so you can’t complain! They sometimes tend to sound more melodic on “Especially Danny” more glammy (“Sucker For The Blues”) or more pop punk (“Negative Heaven”), but the band gets even better when playing straight punk rock (“When Did I Die”) and catchy classic hard rock (“On And On.”) After touring the USA and Japan, big chances are BITCH QUEENS are going to deliver their decadent sermon on a town near you soon. /Laurent C.

X-Darlings “Dead Toy Capital Of The World”

X-DARLINGS started as a studio duo (Harry Darling of BITCH QUEENS and Isabela Eder of DELILAHS) and has evolved into a full band introducing themselves with this debut album “Dead Toy Capital Of The World.” Opening song “Are You Talking To Me?” hits hard since it mixes infuences such as DEVO and The CRAMPS with a glam vibe. This song actually reminds me of the amazing PINK GREASE. You’ll hear some garage rock’n’roll guitars in “There For You” and in “Laxative”, some modern rock (‘Snap Out Of It”, “Sucks To Be You” or “Particle Collision” that almost starts like BACKYARD BABIES‘ “Minus Celsius”) and some punk rock in “Keep Reading.” While the album definitely has a lot of energy and a will to make us dance, songs like “In Transit” and “Brand New Day” show us that X-DARLINGS also has an interesting quieter pop side. Quite a convincing debut album, check it out! /Laurent C.
