The high point of my long dead musical career was undoubtedly, just opening up for these real rocknroll motherfuckers from Long Beach, California, in some crap bar, or punk rock pizza place or something, so long ago, I can barely remember, and traveling with the headliners and summa my former Boston ghetto punk amigoes to Chicago the next night while somehow, mysteriously, my crappy car, parked back in the overpriced, college townhouse apartments parking lot, where I lived for at least another week after that, caught fire just for no reason at all. I needed to call my childhood brother, former best friend and original guitar player yesterday. I rarely hassle the dude anymore cause he has a big job and two kids he does not get to see enough, because he is always so busy, but I called the brother and found out his mom had died nine days ago. I got to speak to her two times over Christmas, she had always been a mother figure to me. We were wild little heathen rascals growing up, and even after he got serious and went to college, she continued to nurture and protect me whenever I had problems all the way into my thirties, I’d still go visit her, or stay with her sometimes when I was going through breakups with girlfriends or whatever. I even went with her and all her kids on family trips in the summers, she would help finance our little kid bands by working as a secretary and running a sewing business out of her house, hand creating prom dresses and stuff for people, lovingly made memory bears made of people’s clothing and now she has passed, a part of me has gone with her, ya know wht I mean? Like she was my home base for so long, and she helped raise some of her grandkids, she just provided so much care and stability and hospitality and loving warmth to all of us. Even though she was peasant poor, she always mananged to lay out a big spread at the dinnertable, even burnt candles and said a prayer. She used to call me her prodigal son. It’s a real drag, a big loss. Makes me wanna quit cigarette smoking again. It’s been a real stressful winter here, with all the death and loss and worry and memories. I’ll probably talk to her other kids at some point, we all live in different states, now. I’m ever so glad they all gathered around her last Christmas, she loved them so much. I can tell you that old cliche is true, that old people used to tell us, you’ll never know what it’s like-parenting, until you have kids of your own. My friends who never have kids never learned how to put somebody else or grater cause first, it’s all still just aboyut that next fix or acquisition. I think about my grandparents all the time. All the work and worry we put them through, now, I also have grown kids who I fret about and long for and always wanna help and protect, and that Soul Asylum song we used to like in our early 20’s that went, “grandfather watched the grandfather clcok and the phone hasn’t rang for so long”, has ceased reminding me of how I should call my own grandparents who raised me and died, it’s bizarrely taken on layers of new meaning, as I’ve become the old man forever waiting to hear from long lost absent children who are out there in the world doing their own things. Life’s a weird trip for me, man. If it wasn’t so cold out there, I’d probably commence dredging through my storage tubs looking for pictures of my man’s mom to send to him and his siblings, maybe later today, if it wams up some. Me and that kid had a real cool rocknroll chemistry together when we were young, we were sortof opposites in some ways but really complimented ach other onstage, a bit like Roth and Van Halen, I’m still askin’ myself all the time, “Where Have All The Good Times Gone?” A dear friend suggested I pen my memoirs cause I had a crazy life but I already did that years ago-just never published the shit cause it felt too soon. As I age, I find myself wanting to protect ’em all-the wild, the innocents, the Elizabeth Street Shufflers. I got a pic of our old homies Keith B and Dave A sitting on a bench in the woods somewhere with my long lost leather jacket, watching us glam brats play some old hippies shindig in the woods. I first discovered Japan in the pages of “Smash Hits” magazine of course, in the early eighties, I had yet to escape my tumultuous upbringing in the hellish cornfields and stinky gymnasiums of the loathsome smlltown Midwest where they browbeat all the no brains males into military service. They were sortof like the ultimate band in many ways-imagine a cocktail that’s like three parts Roxy Music and one part Hanoi Rocks, right? What more could you ever ask for? 5 great records in like three or four years. If you wanted futuristic escapism and decadent urban thrills, and boy did I ever, Japan had all that and more. Japan were TOTALLY like Duran before Duran, probably. I’ve been on a big Japan kick lately. They had a night time spooky throb and arty guitar like Bauhaus, but with a deep disco groove you can’t really help but involuntarily move to, opaque, abstractly poetic lyrics sung in a sexy, sneery, Rotten meets Bowie, Scott Walker kinda sultry croon. If you love D2, Bowie, or Roxy or Human League, ya gotta dig deep into the Japan discography. I can listen to their stuff all day, they were so cool, danceable, visual, sensual, brilliant clothing, Enoesque keyboards, Chic or Ohio Players disco vibes, angular, stabbing, Television like guitars. David Sylvian looks like Nick Rhodes or vice versa actually, so dapper, moody, emotive. Punk-Funk before their time, they still sound so futuristic, it’s amazing. I just swoon for this stuff. If you ever wanna show me a real cool time, just provide a pint of vodka, a couple bottles of Champagne and let me play Japan real loud all night! I can just get lost in the cool grooves of this band. I think they achieved the perfect hybrid of like Roxy, Bowie, Talking Heads and seventie disco, really. Too sexy and soulful to be prog rock, but they bring all those layered atmosphers along with the sexy wildness. They were probably even better than Duran, but obviously nowhere near as well known. Whenever I think they’re gonna get too jazzy, they keep their sound rockin’, hard driving like the Power Station or Billy Idol. I love the vocalist so much! He’s one of the great rocknroll cult figures because his talent was just explosive and what a fucking band he had. Lucky. Motherfucker, really. Night Boat or Night Porter, it’s all New Romantic to me but if I was asked to choose between LeBon and Sylvian, it would be Syvian, everytime. All those guys were so fucking talented. I know my longlost old friend Brian Smith was influenced by them, too. The Pills and Beat Angels and Gentlemen After Dark guy. Personally, I still like their first record best but their more cosmopolitan fanbase seemed to like their latter day stuff when they finally wrangled Giorgio Moroder who Duran Duran have just recently finally collaborated with I believe, and also Roxy’s old producer, John Punter. Mick Karn went on to work with Peter Murphy in Dali’s Car and Gray Numan and Kate Bush all the eighties esoteric, more experimental and avant garde elites like Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Robert Fripp, and pinup pretty Sylvian went on to have a very successful solo career. 5 great records in like three or four years. If you’re a producer or guitar player who’d like to do something kindof Japan influenced and dark and glammy and urbane with synths AND snarly guitars, by all means, please do send me a Bat Signal. I think everything they did was extraordinarily entertaining and elegant and artfully ambient, but I like alotta stuff my rocker friends think are appalling and too cocktail jazzy like “Slave To Love”, and shit like that. I like Scritti Politti and ABC ya know? “Silver Moon” reminds me of Fra Lippo Lippi. Sylvian is divorced from Ingrid Chavez but they have two kids together. Remember that old Prince song, “Hippie Blood”?

I’m not very suprised to see Wattie (singer in French punk rock band DEAD END) releasing a post-punk album since the guy has always been a huge CURE fan and you can hear this from the start with the piano and synth driven opening song “Dark Indside.” Although the vocals on “No Signal” also sound CURE influenced, the song itself sounds closer to modern post-punk that bands like FRUSTRATION play so well. The punk side of Wattie shows more in “She Loathes Me Now”, more WARSAW than JOY DIVISION ! “Syd Ogy” puts an end to this EP with style and pure darkwave fashion mixing 80s analog synth to Robert Smith guitars. I can not believe it’s been forty fucking years. I guess I was about 13. We did not unearth this particular title for a few more years after that-I was probably sixteen by the time me and my dear homie, Dave, finally shook out a copy of this fucking heroic marvel of a life changing masterpiece. I don’t talk to Dave much anymore, so I dunno if he still listens to it, but I know I do. Back then, he wanted to be like Andy McCoy, he had the hat, the frilly shirt, the makeup, he painted, played guitar just like a ringin’ the bell, the whole bit I remember when he painted those Japanese anime Hanoi Cartoons on his ripped up jeans. I still got summa the pictures to prove it but the vast majority of the most important pics from that era were hoisted by family members back when I was being evicted, so like photos of me and Andy McCoy on the “Instinct” tour, all our pix from the goth bar where we hungout in Indiana, pics I took with Jerry Nolan and Mike on his way out the door with my rolledup fanzine in his hand at the Thunders tribute show, all that is hopefully in the custody of one of my ex wives, and maybe I’ll get to see some of those old photo again someday. Probably not though, it feels like I’m runnin’ outta time now! We took a bunch of photos on Mike’s bus in Detroit when he put his sparkly top hat on me! Even my leather jacket that all those guys signed got stolen while we applied for army/navy surplus store jobs way back in Cambridge, Massachusetts! Our friend Ron Essex, who joined the army and later became a professional photographer, he painted a big portrait of Mike on our ’73 Oldsmobile. We used to drive that car to see like Iggy or Faster Pussycat or Circus Of Power or L.A. Guns whenever we got enough gas money and it frequently brokedown. Anyways, as crazy punk smalltown glam kids, we were totally en thralled by this record! My favorite is still, “Back To Mystery City” which alongside Generation X “Into The Valley Of The Dolls” has been like, tied as my Alltime Favorite Record for most of my life, but songs like, “Sweethome Suburbia”, “Teenangels Outsiders”, and “Motorvatin” are what first motivated Dave n Deke n me to start the perpetual search for a drummer, I remember Chris M., the school psychiatrist’s son saying he was gonna get some drums for Christmas but I think his folks frowned upon the idea of his making music with us disreputable hooligans. Dustin and Dan’s (RIP) parents, our other sometimes bandmates, forbade them from coming to rehearsals-they’d have to sneak over to practice those early metal covers like “Smoke On The Water” with us in my mom’s townhouse basement. A guy named The Ratt was our first bassplayer but he was Deke’s Beavis & Butthead sidekick, and when Deke was fed into the military by the adults in that dreadfully oppressive and brutal tankplant town, The Ratt also disappeared. We called him that cause he wore a satin tour jacket from Spencer Gifts in the mall that had the Ratt logo on the back. We hungout on the dirtbike trails behind the drive in and sometimes at the arcade in the mall. I remember our first imaginary album was supposed to be titled “PIPE DREAMS”…by HARLOT! “Fallen Star” took on more and more meaning over the years, as so many of our dearest friends died. First was Beefy, then Dan, then Mitch, Kevin Little, and on and on. Hanoi Rocks made me start writing songs really, them and like I said, Generation X. Those are the primary bands that inspired me and my gang. I suppose also the Clash and Flesh For Lulu and Lords Of The New Church/Deadboys. When I play those old records, I feel young and bold and ready to take on the world. We even covered summa those songs at our early shows once we started finding suitable drummers. I think we did “Devil Woman”, “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams”, “Tragedy” and some others. I could not sing as good as Mike and as Ian Hunter sez, “I was not half as pretty”, but I had that feeling deep down in my soul, I had that same calling, that same instinct to grab the microphone stand, and yell my heart out, tear it up for the kids. We were wild, wild boys for many, many years. Some of those guys went straight and some of their replacements overdosed and died and shit. I could not afford to pay those big city rents with my part time dishwasher and record store wages, so eventually, I had to leave and relocated to the farthest reaches of the deadend desert. Some parts of this town look like Tattooine, Luke Skywalker’s planet, which makes a lotta sense in a way, cause I sure do feel like one of the last of my kind, out here. I still live by the old codes, abide by the old ways. I got a dance pressed in my stance now. I had a bombshell girlfriend I never got over back then and all those songs from “Don’t Follow Me” to “Ice Cream Summer” always made me think of her. I used to make her a million cassettes with all those songs on ’em mixed in with like new wave like Jesus & Mary Chain and Psychedelic Furs and the Cure and Love And Rockets. I always thought I was gonna make it big in rocknroll and win her back again! As the years zoomed by, all our ex friends would kinda chastize me, because I never grew up, ya know? Everybody’s mom kept calling me Peter Pan, so I wrote a real heartfelt song about that called, “Where Is Wendy”, now it was a rushed job in the recording studio when I tried to get it to tape properly, we were an under-rehearsed lineup and tried to cram too many songs into an 8 hour day, so I was real unhappy with the vocal, it was too long and needed a little more sweetening, but if I ever get the chance, I was re-do it, get it down on tape the way I hear it in my head and in my heart, cause I still think of it as one of the real good ones, just not the rushjob version. So I can identify with Andy and Mike always wanting to fix their album that they felt the engineer was trying to make sound like Spandeau Ballet. I still love Hanoi to tears. Hanoi Rocks, Forever!

I think I shot ’em an email tellin’ em to send me promo sawg for review back when I had a big column in the national Barnes & Noble punk mag, they never did, but of all the bands that were still around doing it right when I went into my first retirement to care for my three older children, they seemed the most like me and my ramshackle set to self destruct before we even got our fifteen minutes flash punk booze bands, had we not always fucked up and broke up right when we were two steps from the move. They kinda had it all, did everything right. I salute them! My kinda punk band! They were exactly like me and my old muckers but my lot all managed to either kill themselves or vanished into some kinda big city gentrification scene that was never gonna be my bag. All that rich people hipster shit still feels too much like middle school to me. The good part of being in the no man’s land deadend graveyard town desert is I don’t have to fuck with gentrification brunchers or pink haired Secretaries very much anymore, but the down side is no punks, no record stores, no wild music. Just a lotta sad old people waiting to die, and a scary school to prison pipeline slippery slope for the kids who got nothing to do. We lived that shit as 80’s kids, but we formed bands, wrote songs, promoted our own little desperate livin’ basement rock shows, made our own clothes and shit. Made our own tv shows. Those were different times. Ten bands. $5 at the door. Keg of beer in the corner but punk rock Adam sat right beside it on a milk crate, had an I.V. Punk rock had gotten real lowbrow in the Nashville Pussy/New Bomb Turks/Supersuckers/Candy Snatchers era, ya know I’m not sayin’ those were lousy bands, at least not all of ’em, but all their midwestern fanboy copycat clone imitators were-all the little suburban punk bands were copying like Zeke or whoever, and the lyrics were all becoming some shit to do with their tattoos, sideburns, pussy and hot rods, ya know? Moral Crux weren’t great cause their singer had spraypainted slogan Clash clothes or Billy Idol hair, anybody can do that, most of us have, but the music was good, they could write songs and they were saying shit that was important, that mattered, they had messages in their tunes and I thank them for that. Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujuh” documentary was really good. Used to take him up to seven years to write a song. I love him the best. KD Lang kills it at the end. I mean slays it-better than wainwright or Buckley. I used to have that beautiful book with all of his lyrics but I gave it to my former divebar co host the legendary jester, comedian and kaleidescope maker Dan way way way back in the day when he used to live with my fallen street poet bluesman train hopper motorcycle anarchist brother. I wrote many songs about those guys. One’s dead and one kinda joined the in crowd. I drink a great big whiskey to ’em anyway. I was watching some Dave Chappelle special and he was talkin about how you better learn to play basketball, sell crack or dance for the white people cause those are the only ways out and I laughed out loud because way back in my twenties I had already come to terms with the poverty and knew my only way out of the ghetto was writing real good songs and convening a real good rocknroll band. Harder than it looks. It was so important to me and I just failed and failed. The crazy part is I still think I can do it. Even now when my friends are gone and my hair is gray, ya know the very motherfuckers I used to sing “Tower Of Song” alongside, Mark and Andy 2, Adam, and Unconscious, they’re all dead now. Even the die hardest motherfuckers I ever knew rolled up the flags and assimilated, sold all the guitars a long time ago, but I’m still here, “STILL CRAZY”, like the movie, I still think I can do it. Leonard was doing it until the very end. He aint like thesse sleepwalkin’ little automoton, punk by numbers, jiveass fakes we got now, he always bet big, risked all, revealed himself, stayed young in that way.
You know I always loved Soft Cell and really took a lot from Marc Almond in the way of how I dressed and applied makeup and cut my hair as a teenager. Him and Stiv Bators, right? He is still such a wonderful enetertainer who, like Boy George, has just gotten better at singing and commanding a stage and nowadays he plays with Neal X, one of my favorite guitar players from the fabulous Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Sputnik were crassly commercial moneygrubbing image peddlers way before all the professionally styled mainstream product haircuts and wardobes we got now, and Marc Almond was a gay satanist way before you were. They are probably one of the best remaining showbiz superstars in my disappointed worldview. One of the last few stars who really glisten. I’m gonna go search youtube now to look for a video of Almond singing Peggy Lee’s “Is that All There Is?” It’s really hard to even fathom how great of a talent Marc Almond is…and then, you add Neal X! Fuckin A! Closest thing we got left to Bowie/Ronson, ya know? Please send me a copy of that LOVELESS record on purple vinyl as soon as you possibly can! I love those cats.
Like I said, I kinda got burned in my twenties by the whole Alternative/Grunge frathouse scene so I kinda dropped outta music for a long, long time and stayed busy working shit jobs and raising babies and caring for various family members so I lost track of most all the bands that seemed somewhat promising back when I still participated in fanzine culture and received stuff to review in the mail all the time. One band I remember thinking was pretty cool when they were just getting started was LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. I thought they had some good ideas, were vaguely Leftish which I like, and did a real theatrical stage show kinda reminiscent of goth bands from my era like ya know Rozz and Kommunity FK, Bauhaus and Skinny Puppy. I’m an old school goth in that I was never really into Nine Inch Nails, Orgy, or Marilyn Manson and I can’t stand the Hot Topic people who came after them and hijacked that whole tradition and image for elitist exploitation and greedhead commercialism, like Lady Gaga, I can’t stand that shit, Murderdolls came along and kinda took the whole look we had in my doomed glitter gang Murder Stars and they were followed by Black Veil Brides and all those bands just had so much money, how could you even hope to compete with them? After them Spooky Kids cracked the mainstream, the powers that be were superfunding like one million Marilyn Manson Junior bands, I could not even keep track of them, it wasjust like when all the fake Guns N Roses bands were gettin’ signed as soon as “Sweet Child” got played. LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, though, they were pretty good, had a zillion people pass through their lineup and ya know, I know how that is. I could not even name ’em all. London After Midnight’s primary ghoul Sean Brennan seemed real talented to me and I appreciated that he was more cerebral than many of his contemporaries in the spitting blood steampunk, horror punk, corny cliche’d modern world. I think I first heard about them in a cool old glam and goth zine called “Machine Gun Etiquette” in the early nineties when I lived in Boston.
It never mattered who did what first, it’s who did it with the money machine behind ’em that the capitalist culture will call successful innovators, so I think that has a lot to do with why so many of my former bandmates kept relentlessly dropping out and turning in their black leather for some khaki pants or whatever. We had a whole procession of white trash punk and metal bands with goth and cowpunk and derelict country and new wave influences, but there were too many people with access to big flash studios and money, who had like industry backers and people who knew about copyrights and licensing and touring and merchandise, in their corner. When I see the big money artifical glam bands, man, I can’t help but have these severe pangs of loss and regret cause we were doing that whole act back in what ’86 or 87? We shoulda stuck with it but there was a mutiny. I can see so many my former, once youthful collaborators in the look and energy of these bands, but they all split when times got hard, and one of my old drummers even sadly became a fucking cop. I kinda despair over some of them. I see ’em on the social medias promoting wars, fascism, and official ruling class narratives and it really gets me down.
DANCING ON THE VALENTINE
My old lady made me a mosaic valentine based on one of my favorite songs by Chris Isaak-“Two Hearts”. It’s a real wonderful piece of art and deeply felt by the recipient, cause man, oh man, we’ve been through the war together! I had crazy dreams last night about a bear in the yard-we get cows out there at night alot, but the bear was scarier, then, there was an old DJ friend working at a Tiki joint in a stripmall clad in a Hawaiian shirt and covered in butterfly tattoos, somebody chasing a red ball in the middle of traffic, a lot of nights I dream about being on a bus going the wrong way, or running to catch the subway but missing it. Lott a symbolism in there. I don’t over analyze ’em. Man, it’s fucking cold here this morning and all the Big 5 mockingbird pig-media headlines scream about alien invasions. Chinese balloon, Chinese bats, more billions for Zelnsky and the NFL. My kid asked me why I don’t like football and I told him it’s probably cause my mom sent me to the richkid suburban football school, hoping I’d get a better education than at the downtown poor school, but what I saw was football being used to train the kids for war, and accept inequality and obey whoever wears a whistle around their neck. Those special privilege sportos from back then are still abusers, still bullies, and forever identified with their team colors-just like all the political party people who don’t care about injustice, they just wanna be on the winning team. Few people teach their youth to treat others with knidness, consideration and mercy, they just teach them to win at all costs. I don’t even talk to people I thought were my lifelong friends on the phone no more caues they are too busy winning and Thanking Obama for keeping it classy. Suggestible Murkkkans will still believe anything the tv tells ’em and call that science-ever since 9/11, the permanent ruling class here know they can sell any garbage to the people using tv, and they will eat it up with a spoon for fear of being called unwoke or anti-scientific or Russian influenced or conspiracy theorists. Even the Architects and Engineers For 9/11 Truth, even Sy Hersh. They censor Spike Lee movies, censor Oliver Stone films, and people who consider themselves liberals think that’s okeydokey cause they just wanna Thank Obama some more. There’s a big movement to organize Anti-War marches in this country but the usual Bot Armies are deployed to deligitimize that very healthy, sane instinct. There will always be someone you do not agree with anywhere you go, but teh Sensitivity Spacers have been taught to cancel anyone they disagree with about anything ever for wokeness, how did we go from don’t abuse people with hate speech to obey the establishment all the time or else, in one generation? If you don’t keep fulltime custody of your own kids, they will be conditioned by someone else, most often the capitalist hierarchy and the Honky Death machine which forever insists that might makes right. You can not have any sortof demonstration in this country without the government sending in the masked Proud Boy government informant tupes to break a window and blame the protestors, that’s just how it is. I remember writing in one of my notebooks, “The World Needs More Johnny Thunders Cover Bands” way back in the old times and of course, I was kinda joking. Write a song about something that’s affecting you now. Your own song. All the print press is gone in my country or like music and tv weaponized to promote war and the future microchip police state with the robot dogs and obedience scores already being rolled out incrementally. Ya know I really liked how Prince was influencing rappers in the late eighties more than I did when the rappers were influencing Prince in the mid nineties. I definitely went through a deeply devoted Del La Soul and PM DAWN phase, I loved how both of those bands were brave enough to do the unexpected and used creativity to stay fresh and original so I saw them as kindred spirits even if I was a whiskey sodden purple cowboy goth back then, I loved their slightly psychedelic pop vibes. So did both of my old bassplayers Bobby and John. Sadly, Bobby died of unknown causes, just suddenly a couple years back. I really miss the man. Of course Prince Be is already gone, too. Always seems kinda sad to me when all the rappers and pop tarts make the one eye sign in all their photos. I dunno what’s up with that but I remember being real enamored with all these guys in like 87 or whatever who were sampling real unexpected shit-that’s what it meant to be fresh back in the day, not 100 artists all doing the same identical, choreographed Squid Game occult ritual bullshit. It’s fair to say that when Rachel Stamp emerged on London’s rock scene in the mid-90s, nobody had seen anything like them in many years. Grunge had taken root at the start of the decade, while the metal scene had delved into new extremes of darkness. Real glamour was conspicuous by its absence. Fronted by the unashamedly gorgeous David Ryder Prangley, Rachel Stamp to the rescue!
Formed in 1994 by singer/bassist Ryder Prangley and guitarist Will Crewdson, the band went through a number of changes, making a name on the London circuit, before signing to WEA to record their debut album. As luck would have it, that album went unreleased when their A&R champion left the label. This would derail many young guns, but not to be deterred, they recruited new drummer Robin Guy, and set out on their own, crashing the lower reaches of the national charts with ‘My Sweet Rose’ on their own Bitch Vinyl imprint.
With the ‘classic’ line-up completed by keyboard-player Shaheena Dax, Rachel Stamp were the ones to watch, picking up serious media coverage from the likes of Kerrang!, Melody Maker, Metal Hammer and even the soaraway Sun, who were suitably outraged by the band’s ‘gender bender’ image.
Recorded and mixed in just seven days with producer John Fryer (Nine Inch Nails, Love And Rockets, White Zombie, HIM), Hymns For Strange Children was released in February 2000. Propelled by a swathe of rave reviews, a Kerrang! front cover, and the radio hit ‘Didn’t I Break My Heart Over You’, a major tour in support of the album climaxed in the band’s biggest ever headline show at the 2,000-capacity London Astoria, where they’d supported No Doubt, Korn and Cheap Trick just months previously.
Now, while all about us is doom and gloom, the world need Rachel Stamp more than ever! Twenty-three years on from its original release, Easy Action Records are releasing Hymns For Strange Children fully remastered and repackaged, for the first time ever on limited edition pink vinyl while a new CD edition adds six bonus tracks.
“We paved the way for a whole generation of fans to be themselves and not to blindly conform to what someone else told them they should be,” says Ryder Prangley today. “It was really tough to walk around looking the way we did back then. There was a lot of verbal and physical abuse directed towards us and I’m sure it was the same for our fans, but we all lived through it and came out the other side for the better.
“I meet a lot of musicians who used to come and see us play when they were teenagers and were inspired by us,” he adds. “But I don’t think there has really been a band since Rachel Stamp that mixed heavy, distorted guitars with synths and melodic vocals like we did. We’re still unique in that way and I’m very excited that Hymns For Strange Children is being re-released and hopefully reaching a whole new audience.”
