Yeah I have no trouble admitting it at all, that I was a bit obsessed with Adam & The Ants, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Dead Or Alive, Culture Club, Southern Death Cult, Bow Wow Wow, Doctor & The Medics, from more cerebral post punk like Public Image and Joy Division and Theater Of Hate and Red Lorry/Yellow Lorry to some totally throwaway, instantly disposable pop trash like Frankie and King and Baltimora and Scritti Politti and Wham, I loved all that shit. Used to wear all that jangly Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper junk jewelry from Claire’s Boutique in the mall and like, old lady leopard skin from second hand stores. Some faux kabuki Alien Sex Fiend facepaint. Colored floor length fur coats and shit. My high school peers did not like it. They were all into golf and weight lifting, “Guess” and sports cars. I liked “Smash Hits” magazine, makeup, death rock, synth pop, cross dressing, drinking at the cemetary, making songs on tape recorders in my older friend’s sad room. They always took way more than a pound of flesh for it. Ya know they feel obligated to slag and smear you, if you aint one of them. That’s just how they are raised-to always hate the other-to smear the queer. We discovered Dr. and the Medics right around the same time my older guitarist was getting into that first White Zombie record and Zodiac Mindarp became another big influence, like, I thought if we were gonna ask the kids to cough up five bucks at the door for whatever keg was cheapest draft beer we should also be giving them something memorable to look at, but it became a source of static, cause the hardcore kids just wanted to have a slamdance pit up front and my own faitful contingent were the more sensitive and artsy people who stood at the edge of the crowd-those were my people, the gloomy ones who did not fit in with the shirtless jocks or rich kid just visiting cultural tourists going theough their Fugazi phase or whatever–even though, the more way out me and the guitarists became visually, one dude in his total Antinowhere League grebo biker incarnation, the other guy in his very effeminate Joe Perry leather trench coat guitar hero persona, me in whatever mad, bad and dangerous to now regalia I put together impulsviely while listening to Depeche Mode over the bandhosue P.A., more people were attracted to the hoopla and fanfare and it’s easy to shock and outage conservative audiences in military/evangelical tank building towns, but while our smalltime cult fame and notoriety was starting to catch fire with a faithful tristate following of deathwish kids from the bigger cities and heavy metal chicks we knew from various schools, that new attention and growing reputation also generated more envy, animosity, and disapproval from the normies at the suburban schools our rhythm section were still attending or just graduating from, so they had to decide, do I want to be associated with all the crazy androgynous theatrical cartoon characters that football players and their sports parents wanted to kill or punish, or do (they) wanna fuck off with some preppie kid doing more conventional cargo shorts 1,2,3, 4 Ramones punk, that was easy for Black Flag gym memebership hardons to understand and approved of by jocks and sports moms in the affluent suburbs, so in the end, we split into two bands. The normals became big hot rod punk celebrities in the college town two hours away, always opening for the big name hot rod band of the day, and the biker punk and leather pants wearing Sputnik goths went to the wrong coast and never found a permenent drummer. One guy went to med school, one guy lived in his van mostly and became a superstar bartender in a crack town back in Shmoehio and did a solo band, me I kept starting new groups but whenever we were two steps from the move, some shit would go down and all my bands broke up like in the Peter Laughner song! In the 80’s me and summa my friends mainly hungout at gay dance clubs that played 70’s disco and a lot of Bronski Beat and Pet Shop Boys and some Sunday night goth bar in Ft. Wayne. There was a lot of crossover between disco and new wave, death rock and punk rock. I loved Pete Burns, emulated his appearance. Even tried singing like him for a bit! All the photo sof me with crimped hair just make me laugh now. To me he was like part Ian Astbury and part Boy George. His Liverpool goth band had been called Nightmares In Wax and co starred Wayne Hussey and Julian Cope. I always found it painfully tragic how such a beautiful human being kept getting more needless plastic surgeries.

You know in my late teens, post detention hall, post blackmail haircut when a worm of a vice principal gave me a choice between arsopn charges and a cosmetology haircut and I never went back to school, I was doing a lot of ducking into alleys and hiding out in attics and basement apartments while my older friends were at work and the girlfriends were at school. Usually I spent my days drinking and penning future villain band song lyrics about new wave girls I loved in my purple spiral notebooks, and I suppose that never changed. Strawberry Switchblade reminded me of the Anadin Bros-the background dancers from Dr. & The Medics and The Cult. I was always in love with the Anadin Bros, cause I mean, who wasn’t? They sure could dance, they were as big an inspiration on my subculture as Perri Lister and Billy Idol, really! Jill Bryson and Rose McDowell wrote catchy pop tunes beackedup by slick orchestral sessionmen until they broke up in 1986. Their music was sortof like lazy psychedelia. Reminded me of like the Creatures and Dream Academy or some of those Paisley revival bands sonically. Proto dream pop, really. From Glasgow. Those were the kinda girls I liked-the ones who were into music like I was. By the time I finally got some goth girlfriends that were beautiful and smart and cool who I was totally compatible with, the problem was, it was right when our local infamy was at it’s fever pitch and as much as we all enjoyed entertaining the black sheep and winning over some of the outsider others, it was too much pressure being followed around and stalked and having gangs of sportos hold you down and beat you, and I took the brunt of it cause I’m a pedestrian, so I knew it was time to get the fuck outta Dodge, but meanwhile, my cohorts were adjusting to their newfound local hometown stardom from being in a band. I did not wish to change or become more compliant and less threatening or “less political” to please dumbfucks who never really liked music anyhow, but the backline were totally comforatble with the sports fans and ironing their clothing and shit. So I had to go. One of my exceptional and brilliant girlfriends became a famous radio personality, one remained a public figure forever soughtafter by every one who ever glimspsed her visage, even though she settled down and became a shrink, and one joined the army and married army, one stayed punk and married a punk, one became a teacher and raised a family, you know how it goes. I heard one of ’em moved to Mexico cause that’s where all the drugs are cheap supposedly. Another became a bartender and dated every boy in a band. Another one ended up raising her kid’s kid. I raised some children of my own. One joined the hometown covers band. One moved to Oregon and got a big adult job. Life’s a weird ride, man.

As a young hooligan, not only did I wrongly figure on being able to transform all my smallton friends who vaguely liked the Cure or Smiths into full time lifelong revolutionary punk rockers, but in all my artistic fervor and ceaseless vainglory back then, I even thought I might be able to wrangle some of my girlfriends into playing some of my graveyard train spooky booze tunes, together. So yeah the gothic girl band I had in mind never came to pass, but ya know, if you know me, you know I’m still sacavagening to find ways to put more songs on tape against all odds with no budget in my elderly goth years. One of the girl bands I found really inspiring back then was WE’VE GOT A FUZZBOX & WE’RE GONNA USE IT. I was at that age where they seemed really fun and appealing.
