REMEMBERING DEE DEE

Dee Dee Ramone really was a tragic poet and it breaks my heart to think about how all those guys died with so much division and acrimony and disappointment and bitterness, feeling like failures just because they never got rich. Who Cares? Most of us rocknroll dreamers never even get to make fucking records-they changed the world for the better, at least a little bit. They done good. “POISON HEART” is frequently my favorite song. Desperate times call for desperate measures-whenever I get torturously glum from too much grief, anxiety, poverty and stress, assassinated dreams and a stolen future, I sometimes will watch some old Dee Dee Ramone videos, which always somehow seem to brighten my mood and lift my spirits. I could not stick around for the Ramones show at the Ritz cause I had work in the morning and me and my old amigo Bobby had driven all that way mostly to see our friends, Circus Of Power opening for the Ramones, but you know, the show ran late and we had to go, we did see their tour bus parked out back in the alley. I saw Joey one time getting a slice on St. Mark’s but I did not talk to him cause that’s how shy I was back then. It’s fucking impossible to not smile when you see that video for Dee Dee’s “Funky Man” when he quit the Ramones to become a rapper! I loved his garish, emotive paintings I used to see at Wowsville on Second Avenue, I always wanted to buy some but I have basically always been broke as fuck. Dee Dee was such a character-remember their induction into the crass ass Hall Of Fuckdom when Dee Dee was like, thanking HIMSELF? He was such a sweet and lovable nutcase. My kinda people. I tend to be a pretty sullen cat, so Dee Dee kinda reminds me there aint much point in agonizing over shit I can’t control and did not cause, so some way back to Wowsville rocket ride to the long gone past can help me not take it all so seriously. True story: I lost an old drummer to Dee Dee’s Detroit based Chinese Dragons who later became a cop. Crazy shit, huh? Can’t make this stuff up!

Brevity’s never been my thing. I rambled too long in my last column and it kinda ate itself, apparently there is some limit to how many words you can cram into an email so part of what I said disappeared. My kid woke me up early and it is a sunny day here, I planted some more peppers in pots this morning, broke one of my tomato stems last night and tried to replant it but it did not work, that was another of life’s little setbacks. Long days in the dead dull desert, at least the weather is ideal and the mousquitoes have not arrived, so I am thankful for the cool breeze through the window screen and the birds singing in the yard. My old lady bought me two books that came in the mail, so that is exciting. Our teenager is playing Nirvana loudly, I just never really got their appeal at all, aside from the fact that they were played so many times a day when MTV was still music. He’s has repetitiously watched these epsodes of “Tiger King: so many times, he’s memorized most of the lengthy passages of dialog. “The people that worked for Joe were misfits..” It’s a shame that zookeeper’s music career did not take off, he’s a pretty good countryish singer/songwriter, really. His nesmesis Carol has transferred her cats over to Peta Britney and has plans to leave the country. His rival/friend Doc Antle is probably going to jail for money laundering. I don’t know why Joe Exotic’s rotting in jail; when all those Jeff Lowe conman guys signed affadavits saying they lied about the murder for hire sham. The whole thing is rigged, it’s all about money, people behind the scenes, greasin’ the wheels of injustice. “Lobbying” is Wall Street code for bribery. If you don’t play ball with the big shots, they find the way to drum you out-look at what they did to Cynthia McKinney for refusing to sign the oath of alleigence to Israel. I liked some things Tulsi Gabbard said about lies for war on Syria, and against censorship here and there, and her vocal opposition to the Restrict Act, but I still think she’s ultimately pro war and controlled opposition. She works for psy ops division of the army. Come on.

Nobody on the Squad has said anything on behalf of Julian Assange, or the cop murdered Atlanta treesitter who had his hands up and no gun powder was found by coroner on his hands refuting cop claims he had some firearm and was shooting at them-the cops were shooting at each other, from all accounts. None of the fake progressives said shit about his protestors being hit with “terror” charges(!!!) either, or about the black antiwar group being persecuted as commies cause the DNC just can’t let go of their “Russiagate” fiction, no matter how many times it gets refuted and debunked. One thing I do kinda miss from the mostly bleak and miserable grunge 90’s when they merged all the media into a mockingbird propaganda platform, and killed rocknroll with all the rich people phonies, there were still all those cool underground compilations released by boutique label honchos like Sal from Electric Frankenstein, Martin McMartin, Jeff Dahl and Jim Rinn. I miss Sympathy singles too, until Long Gone John got too singlemindedly hungup on Meg White and every girlband anywhere you know he always released so much good stuff. That guy from Cold Front Records did some awesome stuff too, and of course our big faves, Vicious Kitten from Australia! is an excellent book I am reading by an old “Smash Hits” magazine scribe named Dave Rimmer and those of you who read my columns here on a regular basis know I am a lifelong “Smash hits” devotee and self identify as New Romantic. It starts off with Jon Moss who played with everybody from the Clash to the Damned before turning down Adam Ant who he thought was too singlemindedly obsessed with fame and being famous and controlling his brand and hooking up with Boy George who was obviously every bit as obsessed with fame and being famous as Adam Ant. Anyways, it’s the story of the New Romantics, kinda my favorite era really-Human League, Duran Duran, Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants and Culture Club. That’s my scene. I never liked Spandeau that much. I’m a diehard Duran fan. Also reading “There Was A Little Girl” by Brooke Shields, ya know she’s like four years older than me so I was just the right age to really fall in love with her in Blue Lagoon, like every other dumb boy of my generation though I refused to wear the designer jeans and mandatory golf shirts of my preppie peer group back in the day and took a lot more guff for being new wave than you might even believe if I told you. I saw that documentary about her and have even more compassion for her journey through mainstream meatgrinder of Murkkkan stardom, she’s a real cool person in my book.
